Denmark vs. Australia
Minute Commentary
90' SIGN OFF
Thank you for joining us this morning for our coverage of this Group C match! Follow along later today when France take on Peru and Argentina face off against Croatia.
90' FINAL ANALYSIS
Denmark were the better team for about 30 minutes, but then the Australians took control of the match and truly impressed. While it ended in a draw, the Socceroos pulled off a big surprise in Samara today against a favored Danish squad. Christian Eriksen’s goal was a masterpiece, but that was about all he was able to accomplish versus a structured and resilient defense. Both teams are still alive in this World Cup as Denmark failed to punch their ticket into the next round of the competition and the Aussies managed to squeeze out a point to put everything on the line next week when they face Peru.
90' FINAL
The whistle blows and this game is final! Australia and Denmark each take a point from this affair!
90' RYAN SAVE
Christian Eriksen swings in a corner kick from the right flag that somehow finds its way to the top of the box untouched and into the possession of the awaiting Martin Braithwaite. The substitute chests down the ball and flicks a left footed volley on target, but Mathew Ryan easily tracks the shot down and makes a routine save to keep this game tied.
90' STOPPAGE
The fourth official raises the board to indicate that we will play just three minutes of stoppage time!
89' SCHMEICHEL SAVE
Kasper Schmeichel comes up huge with a late save to deny the Aussies of the lead! Just moments after stopping a shot from Daniel Arzani, the Leicester City keeper is forced to make a spectacular leaping save on a Mathew Leckie left footed volley.
88' DELANEY CROSS
Pione Sisto springs Thomas Delaney down the left side of the box with a nice pass that leads to the midfielder hammering a cross that is clearly over hit as it flies well over any Danish player and out for a throw in.
86' SISTO YELLOW
Pione Sisto is shown a yellow card for dissent after he approached the referee following a sequence of action where he believed that play should have been stopped for a foul. A foolish decision by a young player.
82' ARZANI CROSS
Daniel Arzani dekes Pione Sisto on the end line, lifts his head, and powers a pass across the face of goal! Kasper Schmeichel lunges toward the ball, but misses terribly leaving the net wide open. Two Aussie players await the cross, but a shanked clearance by Henrik Dalsgaard is enough to prevent the Socceroos from grabbing the lead.
79' SHOULDERED SHOT
Daniel Arzani swings the ball into the box following a nice series of passes strung together by the Socceroos. The pass links up with Mathew Leckie who attempts to get his head on the ball, but instead only manages to have the ball deflect off his shoulder and out over the end line.
76' NABBOUT INJURY
Andrew Nabbout tries to brace himself as he falls to the ground and suffers a painful looking shoulder injury. The forward is clearly in some pain, thus Bert Van Marwijk elects to remove him while he receives medical treatment. Tomi Juric comes on for the forward to finish out this match.
74' SISTO SHOT
Denmark's first attack in quite some time leads to a decent chance for Pione Sisto. The right footed bender is sent toward the far post and nearly finds the back of the net, however Mathew Ryan thankfully watches it miss his far post by just a few inches.
71' MOOY BLAST
Aaron Mooy receives the ball just outside the area, loads up, and unleashes a missile from distance with his right foot! The ball is struck with blistering pace and dips and dives through the air, but his aim is off by just a few feet as it misses the upper corner of Schmeichel's goal.
68' CHANCE FOR SOCCEROOS
What a chance for Australia after Kasper Schmeichel comes out of his net and mishits a punch! The ball fell to Mathew Leckie who had no angle at the open net, so he instead decided to swing the ball to the far post hoping to find a teammate. Robbie Kruse is there, but Henrik Dalsgaard reaches the ball first and blasts a high clearance out of bounds for a corner kick.
67' SUBS
Australia appear to be preparing their first substitution of the game just a few minutes after Age Hareide brought on Martin Braithwaite for Yussuf Poulsen. The Aussie that will enter the game will be Daniel Arzani, but uncertainty surrounds who will exit.
62' SPIN MOVE
Tom Rogic executes an artistic spin at the halfway line that sheds him of his marker! The Celtic man tries to place a pass into the path of an open Mathew Leckie, but the ball is mistimed slightly which allows the Danish defense a moment to regroup and intercept the danger.
57' SCHONE PASS
A corner kick is delivered to the far side of the area by Christian Eriksen and is then redistributed into the middle of the danger area by Lasse Schone. The headed pass hangs in the air for a long time to scare the Australian fans, though their defense is capable as the Socceroos nod the ball out of the box to deny any further opportunities.
54' BEHICH CROSS
Aziz Behich flies down the left wing and whips in perfect cross to the opposite side of the box! Mathew Leckie charges into the six yard box, but a last second aerial clearance by Jens Stryger Larsen on the far post clears the ball out of the area and grants Australia a throw in.
52' SISTO SHOT
The Danish Dynamite finally create a decent chance just over five minutes into the second half! Yussuf Poulsen dribbles the ball to the edge of the box and is taken down, but play goes on as Pione Sisto collects the ball and curls a shot toward goal. Sisto's shot bends to the right post however it narrowly misses the target going out for a goal kick.
51' DANISH ATTACK FLOUNDERING
Something is clearly missing from the Danish attack. They seem entirely disjointed when they reach the final third.
48' LONG BALLS
Denmark continues to float long balls over the top looking to connect with Nicolai Jorgensen in the area, however this strategy seems to be going nowhere so far this match. This time Simon Kjaer tries this idea, but it is easily dealt with by the rigid Socceroo back line.
46' SECOND HALF
The second half gets underway in Samara with Australia now attacking from left to right. Neither Age Hareide or Bert Van Marwijk elected to make any changes at the break meaning we will continue on with the same 22 players that began the match.
45' HALF ANALYSIS
Denmark had full control of this match for a majority of the opening 45 minutes, however the Socceroos really turned the screws during the final 15 minutes of play. Corner after corner produced many chances for the Aussies until a leaping Yussuf Poulsen handled the ball to block a Mathew Leckie headed shot. Mile Jedinak slid the penalty kick into the net with ease to notch his second goal of that variety this tournament. Though Christian Eriksen scored a wonder goal just inside the opening 10 minutes, the Tottenham superstar was noticeably absent for much of the game. Can the Danes put the pieces back together and escape this game with all three points?
45' HALFTIME
We arrive at halftime with Denmark and Australia locked at 1-1!
41' OWN GOAL PREVENTED
Christian Eriksen rockets in a cross off of a free kick that navigates its way through a mess of legs to the far post only to be met by Trent Sainsbury. The Aussie is obviously caught off guard, accidentally sending the ball toward his own goal, but Mathew Ryan reads the situation perfectly and makes a goal line save to prevent an own goal.
40' ROGIC CROSS
Tom Rogic slices a cross from the right wing to keep the pressure up on the Danish back line just moments after the goal. Rogic's pass fizzes through the area untouched, rolling out of bounds for a goal kick, but the Socceroos appear to have all the momentum at the moment.
38' GOAL
Mile Jedinak coolly deposits home the penalty kick to Kasper Schmeichel's right and this game is level! The Socceroos are still alive!
37' VAR PENALTY
VAR has awarded a penalty to Australia! Yussuf Poulsen once again grants the opposing team a penalty this time with a hand ball and he is shown a yellow card.
36' CORNER
Aaron Mooy whips in another Australian corner from the right flag that once again picks out a teammate! Mathew Leckie heads it goal bound, however it takes a deflection and is cleared. The Socceroos appeal for a hand ball but play continues.
30' KRUSE BLOCKED
Mathew Leckie weaves his way down the right side of the box and swings in a low cross to Robbie Kruse at the near post. Kruse struggles to control the bounce, but finally fires a shot toward goal that is immediately blocked by the Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen.
26' KJAER CLEARS
A series of crosses from the left and right cause the Denmark defense to go into a state of panic. Both passes look to be excellently placed, but each one is met by the head of Simon Kjaer who nods the ball out of the danger area.
24' DALSGAARD PERFECT CROSS
Henrik Dalsgaard bends a wonderful cross around several Socceroo defenders that picks out a charging Nicolai Jorgensen in the center of the box. Jorgensen executes a thumping header that sends a bullet of a shot toward goal, but he misses the target by several feet to the right. A chance wasted by the Danish forward.
22' RYAN SAVE
Pione Sisto gains possession in the midfield, chests the ball down, and hammers a volley from way out. The shot has incredible speed as well as decent accuracy, however Mathew Ryan is allowed far too much time to locate it's trajectory to make a routine save.
19' THREADED PASS
Tom Rogic threads a pass through the opposing back line that sends both Aziz Behich and Robbie Kruse into the area to chase it down. The pass appears perfectly weighted, but Simon Kjaer is able to intervene and clear it off of Kruse and out for a goal kick.
15' CLEAN SHEET STREAK
The Socceroos are going to have a difficult time breaking down this tough Danish Dynamite defense. Kasper Schmeichel has not allowed a goal in a Denmark kit in almost 550 minutes of play, a streak that was impressively extended against Peru who peppered the keeper with six total shots on target.
11' CORNER
Australia's third corner kick of the match results in another shot for the Socceroos. This time it is Mathew Leckie who rises above the tangle of bodies to attempt a header, however the shot is completely mishit as it goes well high and wide of the intended target.
8' ERIKSEN STRIKE
Nicolai Jorgensen received the ball at the top of the box and deftly played a flicked pass with the outside of his foot into the path of Christian Eriksen. Eriksen lowered his shoulder and fizzed a volley with his left foot into the upper corner of the net! What an absolute beauty!
7' GOOOOAL!
GOOOOAL!!! Christian Eriksen puts the Danes up 1-0 early with an outstanding strike!
5' COUNTER
A quick counter attack led by Mathew Leckie brings the Socceroo fans to their feet! Leckie plays a fantastic ball over the top that receives a lovely hold up from Andrew Nabbout who dishes it off to Tom Rogic. The midfielder then attempts Australia's first shot of the match, but it is deflected out of bounds for a corner kick.
1' KICKOFF
The whistle goes and the action has begun in Samara! The man in the middle today is Antonio Mateu from Spain who is assisted by countrymen Pau Cebrian and Roberto Diaz as well as Bamlaku Weyesa of Ethiopia. Neither side are in the colors that they are best known for; Denmark wear an all white shirt with red shorts, while the Aussies sport a dark forest green top and shorts.
0' STADIUM PROFILE
The home stadium of Russian Premier League team Krylia Sovetov Samara plays host to this contest as well as four future 2018 World Cup games. The field’s capacity is capped out at approximately 45,000 spectators and it was designed to resemble a flying saucer or spaceship to pay homage to Samara’s involvement in the Russian space program.
0' HISTORY
The Danish and Australian national teams have met three times previously with Denmark owning a 2-0-1 record. The last time they faced off was in a friendly on June 2, 2012 when Daniel Agger and Andreas Bjelland both scored to secure a 2-0 Danish victory over the Socceroos.

0' SOCCEROOS IN DANGER
The Socceroos come into this match in a near do or die situation after a late Aziz Behich own goal gifted France all three points in their opening match on Saturday. Conceivably that pressure is exactly what the Bert van Marwijk and the boys from Down Under need. Throughout the qualification process the Socceroos competed two playoff ties with Syria and Honduras in order to stamp their tickets to Russia. Do the popular Australians have what it takes to pull off what would be a shocking upset to keep their World Cup dreams alive?
0' DENMARK POISED
Denmark struggled at times with a feisty Peruvian squad in their World Cup opener, but in the end they managed to eke out a 1-0 victory. Unfortunately the Danish Dynamite will be without midfielder William Kvist for the rest of the tournament and must now focus on finding a comparable replacement. Perhaps manager Age Hareide will again utilize Lasse Schone or maybe he will employ an entirely different formation due to this injury. Either way, the Danes have a great opportunity to win two consecutive World Cup matches for the first time since 1986 and all but clinch a berth into the knockout stages.
0' WELCOME
The Samara Arena will be the stage today as Denmark takes on Australia! Matchday 2 in Group C begins in just under an hour, stay tuned for our match preview as well as a breakdown of the starting lineups.
