Minute Commentary
90' SIGN OFF
Thank you for joining us for yet another exciting day of World Cup action! Please join us again tomorrow for a full slate of games as Colombia face Japan, Poland take on Senegal, and Russia play Egypt.
90' FINAL ANALYSIS
Tunisia and Nabil Maaloul must leave Volgograd Arena with their heads held high as they put on a valiant performance against the heavy favorites England. They were indeed lucky to find an equalizer during the first half and even looked to be entirely capable of splitting the points, however their defense fell asleep for one play and the a world class striker made them pay. Moving forward, Gareth Southgate and his side must focus on their finishing in the final third or lack thereof. A performance like the one tonight is enough against teams like Tunisia or Panama, but will definitely not be enough to take down another European great like Belgium who the English play in just ten days’ time.
90' FINAL
The final whistle blows in Volgograd and England take the three points by the score of 2-1!
90' KANE AGAIN
Once again a corner kick results in a goal for the Three Lions! This time is Kieran Trippier that delivers the cross from the right flag that is met by the flicked header of Harry Maguire at the near post. The ball then floated across the net to the far post and was nodded home by an unmarked Harry Kane!
90' GOAL!
England have stolen the points at the death! Harry Kane again! England lead 2-1!
88' RLC CROSS
Ruben Loftus-Cheek dekes his defender on the right side of the box and sizzles a low cross into the center of the area that is destined for a wide open Marcus Rashford! Rashford inexplicably dummies the ball to allow it to run into the path of heavily guarded Jesse Lingard who is unable to do anything productive with it before the danger is cleared by the Tunisian defense.
83' DOUBLE INJURY
Another English corner kick results in Farouk Ben Mustapha and John Stones colliding in midair causing both to go to ground injured. It appears that Ben Mustapha's punch on the ball caught Stones in a glancing blow to his face. The trainers are on the field, but luckily it seems that both players will be able to continue on in this match.
81' SUB
Gareth Southgate decides to bring on the Chelsea loanee to Crystal Palace Ruben Loftus-Cheek for Dele Alli. This is quite an interesting decision from the English manager as Alli is a threatening piece of the Three Lions attack while Loftus-Cheek is a considerably more defensive minded player.
79' TEN MAN WALL
Ashley Young takes lines up over a free kick in a dangerous area and elects to go for goal. His shot has enough elevation to avoid the ten man wall, however it is far too high to challenge Farouk Ben Mustapha who simply watches it sail above his cross bar for a goal kick.
77' RASHFORD TO WALKER
Marcus Rashford teams up with Kyle Walker to give the Manchester City man an opportunity to pick out a cross into the area. The following pass from Walker skims along the grass into the center of the area looking to find the streaking Harry Kane, however an awaiting Tunisian defender is able to intervene and clear the danger.
71' ALLI OFFSIDE
A chipped ball over the top by Jordan Henderson appears to catch the Tunisian back line sleeping as Dele Alli is in alone! Farouk Ben Mustapha claims the ball, in turn colliding with Alli, but the whistle is blown to halt play as Alli is adjudged to have been offside.
68' FIRST SUB
Raheem Sterling has been removed by Gareth Southgate from this evening's match after a somewhat lackluster performance. Sterling's speed certainly was put on display tonight, but it failed to contribute or create any real chances for the Three Lions. In his place comes on Manchester United's winger Marcus Rashford.
65' TUNISIA CAPABLE?
For a majority of the first half it seemed that England would have no problem breaking down the back line of Tunisia to find several goals, however as the match has gone on it is less and less apparent. The Tunisians seem completely capable of thwarting most if not all of the English attacks.
60' DIGGING IN
England push further and further into the half, while Tunisia dig in on defense more and more. Now even John Stones has moved forward to begin to whip in a cross, however much like the other attacks this half the Eagles of Carthage are up to the task and easily clear the ball away.
57' HENDO CROSS
Jordan Henderson joins the attack for the first time in a while to float a cross from the right side of the area to the far post. He links up with a trailing Dele Alli, but the ball takes an awkward bounce which forces Allie to try to regroup and recycle the ball back into the midfield.
51' TRIPS TO DELE
Kieran Trippier delivers a corner kick from the right flag stick directly to the penalty spot and an awaiting Dele Alli! His Tottenham teammate rises up to head the ball on goal, but the shot lacks any real pace making it an easy save for Farouk Ben Mustapha who catches the ball and smothers it.
46' SECOND HALF
We are underway in the second half! The teams have switched ends and it is now the Tunisians that attack from right to left. Neither side made any changes at the break so we continue on with the same lineups from the end of the first half.
45' HALFTIME ANALYSIS
The Three Lions came out of the gates buzzing, creating chances left and right until they finally broke through in the 11th minute on a set piece opportunity. Tunisia were clearly just trying to keep up with the pace of the game, but a silly challenge by Kyle Walker inside the area granted them a penalty. Ferjani Sassi capitalized on the opportunity, but only just as Jordan Pickford nearly saved the penalty kick. England, particularly Jesse Lingard, then had several chances late in the first half, but none resulted in the Lions snatching back the lead. If they can continue to press the Eagles of Carthage as they did for a majority of the first half, then England finding at least one goal (if not multiple goals) would be an inevitability.
45' HALFTIME
The whistle blows and we head to the break with England and Tunisia tied at 1-1!
45' LINGARD AGAIN!
Jesse Lingard has another beautiful chance to put the Three Lions back in front when a through ball sends him sprinting into the area alone. Lingard is forced to take a shot with his first touch when Farouk Ben Mustapha comes off his line to close down the angle. The effort is well taken considering the circumstances, however it kisses the outside of the right post and rolls out of bounds harmlessly for a goal kick.
43' LINGARD SHOT
England earns another chance on a set piece after a headed pass back finds an open Jesse Lingard just inside the box! Lingard takes time to compose himself and tries a right footed volley that skims off the back of a Tunisian defender and out for a corner kick.
39' SCRAMBLE IN THE BOX
A Kieran Trippier free kick is headed back across the face of goal by Harry Maguire! The ball bounces around the box creating a mad scramble in front of net. Finally John Stones is able to claim the ball, but he completely skews his left footed shot from close range which allows the Tunisian defense time to regroup and clear their lines.
35' GOAL!
Ferjani Sassi deposits home the penalty kick with his right foot and this game is tied! Jordan Pickford guesses correctly and dives to his right, however Sassi's placement is too picture perfect for the keeper to have a chance at stopping it. Just like that we are knotted at 1-1 in the 35th minute!
33' PENALTY
PENALTY! Tunisia wins a penalty as Kyle Walker foolishly elbows Fakhreddine Ben Youssef inside the area! The VARs will examine this potential penalty, however it seems that it will stand.
31' TRIPPIER TO MAGUIRE
Kieran Trippier lines up over a free kick and floats a lovely pass to the far post that connects with the head of Harry Maguire! Maguire's header certainly has pace, though it clearly lacks placement as the new keeper Farouk Ben Mustapha is in an excellent position to make a routine save to deny the English of their second goal.
27' SASSI SHOT
A turnover at the back gives new life to the Tunisian attack! The Eagles of Carthage link together a series of passes that ultimately leads to an effort from distance by Ferjani Sassi! Sassi's shot looks to be on target, but a diving Jordan Henderson is able to partially block it to send the ball out of bounds for a corner kick.
24' YOUNG TO LINGARD
Ashley Young cuts back to his right foot and bends an inswinging cross to the back post and finds a completely unmarked Jesse Lingard! Lingard elects to volley it with his right instead of using his head, but his decision is poor in the end as he drills the shot directly into the pitch causing it to bounce out of bounds well over the crossbar.
22' BRONN CROSS
Dylan Bronn careens down the right side of the pitch and is able to blow by several English defenders en route to the penalty area in Tunisia's first notable attack of the night. Bronn then attempts to swing a cross back to his trailing teammates, however a sprinting defender is able to place his body in the way to block it out for a corner kick.
18' WALKER CROSS
Kieran Trippier finds an unreal amount of room down the right wing, surveys the box, and whips in a low cross that fizzes through the middle of no fewer than three English players. The pass is finally cleared by a Tunisian defender on the far post, but it was nearly a perfect ball played by the Tottenham player.
16' GOALIE SUB UPCOMING
Unfortunately Mouez Hassen has sustained an injury serious enough to cause him to exit tonight's match. The keeper had been fighting off the pain since the early minutes, however he has been removed for the backup Farouk Ben Mustapha.
12' KANE POUNCES ON THE REBOUND
The ensuing corner kick following Harry Kane's first shot was taken from the left flag by Ashley Young. The Manchester United man is able to pick out a flying John Stones in the center of the area who absolutely thumps a header on goal. Mouez Hassen then makes an incredible save diving to his left, but the rebound falls right to the feet of a lurking Harry Kane who stabs it into the back of the net!
12' GOAL!!!
Harry Kane has scored in the 11th minute of the match! England are in front 1-0!
6' ANOTHER CHANCE
Jesse Lingard is sprung into the box alone down the left flank and swings a cut back pass across the face of goal to an open Raheem Sterling on the far post! Sterling attempts to control the ball to deposit it into the gaping net, but fails to do so and send the ball out of bounds for a goal kick.
3' EARLY CHANCE
An early chance for England following a patiently timed cross by Dele Alli that leads to an unbelievably poor clearance. The lackadaisical defense allowed an open ball to sit unclaimed until Jesse Lingard pounced on it and blasted a low drive on target. Lingard seemed to believe it would be an easy goal, but the trailing leg of the keeper Mouez Hassen blocks the ball on the goal line and sends it out for a corner kick.
1' KICKOFF
We are underway at Volgograd Arena! The Three Lions attack from right to left during the opening 45 minutes in their all red kits, while the Tunisians wear an all white kit. The man in the middle tonight is Wilmar Roldan of Colombia and he is assisted his countrymen Alexander Guzman and Cristian de la Cruz along with the Costa Rican fourth official Ricardo Montero.
0' HISTORY
England and Tunisia have faced off once before in a World Cup and it was also in a Group G opener. The clash took place at the Stade Velodrome in Marseilles during the 1998 tournament and ended in a Three Lions 2-0 win. Alan Shearer put the English in front just before the break in the 42nd minute, while Paul Scholes sealed the three points with a 89th minute clinching goal. Tunisia would go on to finish last in the group on just one point, whereas England advanced to the knockout rounds finishing in second place behind Romania.

0' ENGLAND FORM
England seek to return to greatness this tournament after decades of subpar performances. Their performance thus far in 2018 have many believing that this could be the year for the Three Lions with convincing victories over Netherlands, Nigeria, and Costa Rica. Harry Kane and Dele Alli lead a powerful attack that is one of the most dangerous offenses in the entire World Cup, however questions still surround the backline and goalkeeper position. Will Gareth Southgate employ a three back system or will he go with a more traditional four defender formation?
0' TUNISIA FORM
The Eagles of Carthage arrive in Russia after a rigorous three month span of international friendly matches. Since late March Tunisia have defeated Iran and Costa Rica, both of which by the final score of 1-0, drawn 2-2 with Portugal and Turkey, and lost 1-0 to Spain. With a roster primarily comprised of stars from the Tunisian Ligue 1 as well as a handful of other players from the first and second tiers of France, the Eagles must look to play the role of underdog against two heavily favored teams in Belgium and England.
