Burnley vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME
Not a hiding for Burnley then, as they make their return to the Premier League after four years away, and they can take heart from the scare they gave the bookies favourites for the title this evening. Scott Arfield got them off to a dream start with a rasping finish in the first quarter of an hour. Chelsea came roaring back however with Diego Costa bagging his first goal in the Premier League. Cesc Fabregas was key to everything Chelsea did and his pass for Schurrle's goal, Chelsea's second, was sublime. Ivanovic added some gloss to the scoreline and in truth it could have been more had Chelsea pushed a little harder, but the second half was something of a none event after the excitement of the first period. Both sets of fans will go home satisfied in various degrees, although Chelsea's supporters will be greatly encouraged by the fortitude and quality shown by their new look side.
90' ONE MINUTE TO GO
We're into the second minute of stoppage time here and both sets of players and fans will be happy to see the back of this game.
90' DYCHE SHOULD TAKE POSITIVES
Sean Dyche stands, hands in pockets, glaring out across the pitch. He cannot have too many complaints with his side's performance this evening, as they started brightly, but Chelsea's quality has ultimately shown through and it would have been a brave decision to bet against any other outcome.
89' PETERING OUT
The game is slowly petering out here as Sordell tries to create something but his cross is deflected into the waiting arms of Thibaut Courtois. Drogba lets fly after bringing down the giant keeper's long kick but he drags his effort well wide.
84' DROGBA IS BACK
Burnley are still showing signs of life here as a nice ball from Marney almost sets Trippier away on the right hand side and Chelsea must keep their concentration up. Didier Drogba is on for Hazard to a rapturous reception from the away fans and some comedy boos from those in claret and white.
83' MIKEL AND SORDELL
Both sets of fans are in fine voice here as they urge their teams on but Burnley's hopes wane by the second. Mikel enters the fray in place of Oscar who has been largely anonymous in this second half. Danny Ings also leaves the field to be replaced by Marvin Sordell for his debut.
78' WILLIAN ON FOR SCHURRLE
Nice interplay from Burnley but the ball is hoofed forward eventually and goes straight into touch. Willian is on for the scorer of the second goal, Andre Schurrle, who capped off a fine Chelsea move to put them in front.
76' SET PIECES
The set-piece is clearly something from the training ground as first Dean Marney and then Danny Ings step over the ball but perhaps it should have stayed there as Chelsea react quicker to clear away.
75' BURNLEY PRESS
A decent spell of pressure as the Clarets work hard to give the home fans something to cheer about and a clumsy challenge from Schurrle gives them a free-kick in a promising area.
73' DROGBA WARMING UP
Didier Drogba's formidable frame can be seen moving up and down the touchline, he may well be in line to make his return in the next 20 minutes or so.
70' SUBS ON FOR BURNLEY
A couple of substitutions here now for Burnley, with Lucas Jutkiewicz replaced by Ashley Barnes and Matthew Taylor making way for Michael Kightly.
65' SECOND HALF PANNING OUT AS EXPECTED
This second half is panning out in predictable fashion, with Chelsea sitting back on their lead and Burnley struggling to create chances to get back into the game. The home side lack the quality to break through it seems and if Chelsea keep their concentration then they should see this one out with ease.
63' TOUGH FROM DUFF
Very strong defensive work from Michael Duff to twice cut out play, first with a strong tackle and then a decisive clearing header. His team-mates will draw strength from that kind of play.
61' FIERCE DRIVE OFF TARGET
Lucas Jutkiewicz cuts in from the left and hammers a shot towards goal but it flies wide with Courtois watching on unruffled.
59' CHELSEA CONTENT
There is a sense that Chelsea are happy to settle for their two-goal lead here, stroking the ball around with consumate ease as Burnley work dilligently to win it back.
58' GAME SETTLING DOWN
The game has settled down here somewhat but there is sufficient quality on display for it to spark into life at any second. Burnley are holding firm at the moment though.
53' HAZARD FOR BURNLEY
Eden Hazard shows lightning acceleration and tricky feet, charging at the Burnley defence until he is brought down 30 yards from goal for a free-kick.
52' BURNLEY HAVING A GO
Burnley look threatening here as a break down the right almost fashions a chance for Lucas Jutkiewicz but Cahill steps in and clears the danger. Burnley have to be careful not to over commit however as Chelsea love to break with pace.
50' ARFIELD STRIKES
Cagey start to the second half here as both sides feel each other out. Scott Arfield fires in a lovely shot but he is foiled by a magnificent stop by Courtois, the Belgian stopper flying to his right to tip the ball over the bar.
46' WE'RE OFF AGAIN
We're off again here and will it be a drubbing for the home side or can Burnley rescue something?
45' HALF TIME
That's the first half over and it started with such promise for the Clarets, who looked assured in possession and created a couple of half chances before Scott Arfield buried a lovely finish in the 15th minute. It did not take long for Chelsea to respond, and they did in devastating fashion, a combination of individual skill and team cohesion firing them into a 3-1 lead, including Diego Costa's first Premier League goal. Schurrle netted the second after marvellous work from Fabregas who has been outstanding for Chelsea, and Ivanovic added the third. A real uphill struggle for Burnley now and Sean Dyche will have to choose his words extremely carefully if he hopes to inspire a response from his side.
45' TWO MINUTES ADDED ON
Not long to go now until half time as the fourth official indicates two minutes of stoppage time.
44' ARFIELD ATTACKS
Scott Arfield shows his confidence and skill with a marauding run into the heart of the Chelsea defence until Gary Cahill comes across to clear.
42' IVANOVIC DOWN
Play is stopped momentarily for Ivanovic to receive treatment, landing painfully following an aerial challenge.
40' HAZARDOUS FOR BURNLEY
Eden Hazard shows great strength to hold off the challenge of Trippier but cannot produce a telling cross and Heaton snatches the ball out of the air gratefully.
39' TRIPPIER POPS UP AGAIN
Kieran Trippier has been quiet since his early contributions but now he whips in a teasing cross claimed by Courtois. Chelsea cannot afford to let their concentration slip as Burnley are a determined side.
37' CHELSEA RECOVER IN STYLE
It seems an awful lot longer than 20 minutes ago since Scott Arfield put Burnley ahead and Chelsea are in almost total control here now. Sean Dyche will be grateful for half-time so that he can offer some precious encouragement to his beleaguered charges.
34' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Michael Duff slides in to rescue Burnley after more sharp build up play from Chelsea almost creates a chance. The resulting corner is whipped in towards the back post, eluding everyone except Branislav Ivanovic who slams home and it's 3-1 Chelsea.
32' COSTA BOOKED FOR DIVING
Diego Costa hits the deck after a challenge from Tom Heaton but Michael Oliver is having none of it and shows the centre forward a yellow card. There was perhaps a hint of contact and of course Jose Mourinho is not happy. There is a case for Chelsea to feel a little hard done by there.
30' COURTOIS CLAIMS IT
Lucas Jutkiewicz is unceremoniously shoved in the back and Burnley win a free-kick. The tall striker is a formidable presence and the resulting set play ends up in a corner, easily claimed by Courtois.
28' FAB CESC
Fabregas is pulling the strings in typical fashion here and looks to set Oscar away but is denied. Chelsea get the ball back swiftly and another tricky run from Hazard almost fashions a chance but his cross is too long.
25' BURNLEY MUST REGAIN COMPOSURE
Burnley look a little rattled now and Chelsea are starting to play with more of the swagger you would expect from a Mourinho side up against a relative minnow. The home side must regain their composure quickly or risk being swept away by a blue wave.
24' CHELSEA ON TOP
Quite a turnaround here then, with ecstasy turning to agony in the space of eight minutes for the Clarets. Chelsea stroke the ball around with ease again and Schurrle is almost free on the edge of the box but Burnley battle to win the ball back.
22' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Wonderful stuff from many people's champions elect. A lovely move ends up at the feet of Andre Schurrle who buries a right footed finish past the helpless Heaton. Superb work from Hazard and Fabregas there and that goal was a thing of beauty.
20' CHELSEA BACK ON TERMS
Perhaps a touch of the commentator's curse there as it took only three minutes for Chelsea to nab an equaliser after some less than formidable defending from the home side.
18' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Diego Costa scores his first ever Premier League goal and he won't get many easier than this. The cross from the right from Schurrle was diverted onto his own post by a Burnley defender, and fell at the feet of the Brazilian striker who did not hesitate to smash the ball home left footed.
16' CAN BURNLEY STAND TALL?
Stunning stuff at Turf Moor and who would have predicted this scoreline after 15 minutes? Burnley's defence was a huge part of their success last season and they will give their all to hold this lead.
15' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ben Mee is played onside and is in behind the Chelsea defence. He clips in a lovely cross to Scott Arfield on the edge of the box who has so much time to control the ball and smack a lovely strike past the stricken Courtois. What a goal and what a start for Burnley!
13' THIRD TIME NOT THE CHARM
Schurrle's corner is excellent but doesn't find a Chelsea head. He gets the ball back and whips in another testing cross which is cleared away again but only as far as Cahill who gives it back to the German international. His third bite of the cherry is woeful however and the pressure is relieved temporarily.
11' COSTA SHOOTS
Diego Costa cuts inside from the right and lets fly with his left foot but his shot is blocked away.
10' SCHURRLE HE SHOULD HAVE SHOT
Andre Schurrle brings down a long ball in the box but decides to lay the ball off when it seemed a shot would have been the wiser option and Burnley clear.
9' TRIPPIER THREATENS
Trippier is almost in behind the Chelsea defence but makeshift left-back Cesar Azpilicueta cuts out the through ball just in time. This is a decent start for the home side who do not look overwhelmed by the occasion.
7' JUTKIEWICZ HAS A GO
Trippier is a graduate of Manchester City's academy and was voted the best in his position in the last two seasons in the Championship. He starts off a move that ends up with Lucas Jutkiewicz smuggling the ball past Ivanovic but his weak shot dribbles wide, Courtois untroubled.
5' SCHURRLE EFFORT
Oscar's long ball towards Costa is won in the air by Trippier but his clearance ends up with Andre Schurrle, who shifts the ball onto his right and lets fly. His effort is blocked behind for a corner.
3' DYCHE URGES CONCENTRATION
Sean Dyche is out on the touchline, urging his team to keep their shape as Chelsea probe early here.
1' WE'RE OFF
Michael Oliver finishes tying his laces and blows the whistle to get this one underway. Turf Moor is rocking and whatever the result the home fans will enjoy tonight.
0' MOMENTS UNTIL KICK OFF
We are moments away from kick-off at Turf Moor, and all the signs point to a simple victory for Chelsea, who haven't lost an opening game of a Premier League season since 1998 when they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Coventry. Burnley will be no pushovers however and in the lead up to tonight's match, Sean Dyche was at pains to remind everybody watching that there are no easy games at this level. His side are well drilled and boast players with experience and a serious goal threat in Danny Ings. The next 90 minutes will be as true a test of the verisimilitude of that classic footballing truism as you are likely to see.
0' CHELSEA LINE UP
Thibaut Courtois' inclusion is the main surprise in this Chelsea side. Jose Mourinho kept everyone guessing in the build up to this game but he has opted for the young Belgian who was twice voted the best goalkeeper in Spain during his loan spell with Atletico. Cesar Azpilicueta, John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic are his back four, with Nemanja Matic the anchor in midfield. Cesc Fabregas makes his debut alongside the Serbian, with Oscar ahead of them. Hazard will start on the left with Andre Schurrle on the right, and new signing Diego Costa will lead the line in his typically formidable style.
0' BURNLEY LINE UP
Burnley will set up in a 4-4-2 formation, with Duff and Shackell at centre-half, flanked by Kieran Trippier and Ben Mee who completes what was the meanest defence in last season's Championship. Scott Arfield will start on the right of midfield, with new signing Matty Taylor starting on the left. Dean Marney and David Jones will occupy the centre of midfield, while Lukas Jutkiewicz makes his Burnley debut alongside Danny Ings who netted 26 times last year.
0' INJURY NEWS
Chelsea will hand debuts to two of their three new signings in tonight's match; Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas making their bows for Jose Mourinho's side against Burnley, who ended their four year exile from the Premier League last season, securing second place in the Championship. The hosts will be without striker Sam Vokes, who will be out of action until the new year with a knee injury.
0' PRE SEASON PREPARATIONS
Sean Dyche, known by Clarets fans as 'the ginger Mourinho,' has added seven new faces to his squad in preparation for this season, and though they are many pundits' favourites to make an immediate return to the Championship, it is worth remembering that many tipped them to drop into League One at this time last year. Notable additions include centre-forward Lukas Jutkiewicz, who will take up the slot vacated by Sam Vokes, a long term absentee with a knee injury. Matty Taylor, Steven Reid and Stephen Ward will all provide valuable experience alongside Michael Kightly and Matt Gilks, bringing the Lancashire side's expenditure to around the seven million pound mark. Chelsea are a different proposition however, and their outlay on transfers so far this window is up to 82 million pounds, having brought in Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis, as well as securing the return of club talisman Didier Drogba on a free transfer. The Blues have stripped a fair amount from their wage bill however, with Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, David Luiz and Demba Ba amongst the notable departures.
0' REF WATCH - MICHAEL OLIVER
Tonight's match will be overseen by Michael Oliver. The 29 year-old broke Stuart Atwell's record as the youngest ever Premier League referee in 2010, taking charge of Birmingham City against Blackburn at the age of 25. This is his third full season as a Premier League referee, and last season he averaged 3.82 cards per game over a total of 39 matches, dishing out 141 yellows and four reds.
