Manchester United vs. Swansea City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: UNITED 1 SWANSEA 2
New boss, same old United as the Red Devils crash to a desperate home defeat in Louis van Gaal's first game in charge. To be fair, they deserved at least a draw, but Swansea produced an excellent smash and grab raid to secure their first ever league victory at Old Trafford. Ki Sung-Yeung gave the visitors the lead with an excellent 28th-minute finish from the edge of the area. Wayne Rooney hooked home from close range to level eight minutes after the restart and United looked certain to go on and win it from there. But a quickly-taken free-kick 18 minutes from time was their undoing, with Gylfi Sigurdsson netting after Wayne Routledge's mis-hit shot fell kindly to him in the box.
90' ROONEY IN THE WAY
United have one last chance, but Januzaj's goalbound effort hits his own player, Rooney.
90' TIME TICKING DOWN
United have been pumping aimless balls into the box in stoppage time. Less than a minute to go.
90' NEEDING TREATMENT
Gylfi Sigurdsson is down with a shin injury after a crunching tackle from Nani.
90' INTO ADDED TIME
Here comes the fourth official. United have FOUR added minutes to rescue something from this match.
89' LOOKING COMFORTABLE
Famous last words, but Swansea are looking comfortable here. My guess would be only three added minutes.
86' UNITED BOOKING
Young shoots from long range and although Fabianski makes the save the effort was going wide anyway. Young is shown the yellow card for a bad foul moments later.
84' UNITED BOOKING
Blackett trips Gomis and is cautioned. Shelvey was a little lucky to escape a second yellow moments before.
83' SWANSEA BOOKING
Ki is shown the yellow card for a foul on Fellaini.
83' SAVING TACKLE
Swansea are almost in again, but a wonderful covering tackle by Jones does enough to put Gomis off just before he is about to test De Gea.
81' NOT FAR AWAY
A long free-kick by Young from the right skims off the top of Shelvey's bald head and whistles just wide of the upright.
79' SCORING PEDIGREE
Gomis has scored 100 goals in the last eight seasons in the top flight in France.
77' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Swansea make a straight switch, with Bafetimbi Gomis replacing Wilfried Bony.
74' GOAL DETAILS
It's a bolt from the blue. Bony took a quick free-kick and Montero crossed to the back-post. Routledge slipped as he hit the shot and Sigurdsson was there to slot home.
73' GOAL: UNITED 1 SWANSEA 2
Gylfi Sigurdsson gives Swansea the lead again!
70' GROWING IN CONFIDENCE
It's not the United of old, certainly, but they are playing with confidence here and you would expect them to go on and win. Swansea have offered very little in the second half.
68' BOTH SIDES MAKE A CHANGE
Here is that change. It's Fellaini for Ander Herrera. Ecuador winger Jefferson Montero replaces Nathan Dyer for Swansea.
66' OFF THE WOODWORK
A sublime first touch from Rooney draws a foul from Amat and a free-kick in a dangerous position. The United captain curls a shot against the outside of the right post.
64' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
United are about to make a third change here, Marouane Fellaini is gettting ready to come on.
61' LEGEND IN THE MAKING
Rooney has 217 career goals for United. Next target on the list is Denis Law, with 237.
58' SAVING TACKLE
Rooney shows great skill to create another chance, but is denied by an excellent last-gasp tackle by Williams.
55' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Swansea make a change, with Dwight Tiendalli replacing Taylor.
55' SWANSEA BOOKING
Shelvey is cautioned for fouling Mata near the left touchline and then booting the ball away.
54' GOAL DETAILS
It's a routine finish from the unmarked Rooney, hooking home from close range after Swansea had failed to clear Juan Mata's corner.
53' GOAL: UNITED 1 SWANSEA 1
Wayne Rooney levels for United.
52' TAME VOLLEY
Routledge shows neat control to find Bony, but the Ivorian's long-range volley is tame. In a way, Garry Monk will be pleased: he won't want Bony to score any spectacular goals with the transfer window still open.
51' EXPERIMENT OVER
There will have been a few chuckles yesterday when West Ham boss Sam Allardyce called Louis van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation a “World Cup gimmick”. Big Sam is the one smiling now.
49' YELLOW CARD
Neil Taylor hacks down Januzaj and can have no complaints as the referee brandishes a yellow card.
48' CHANGE IN FORMATION
United have switched to a flat back four, with Phil Jones at right-back, Ashley Young at left-back and Nani on the left side of midfield.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
United get the second half under way. Nani has replaced Javier Hernandez at the break.
45' HT: UNITED 0 SWANSEA 1
United trail at the break in Louis van Gaal's first game in charge. The goal came on 28 minutes from Ki Sung-Yeung, who produced an excellent low finish that gave De Gea no chance. Chances have been few and far between, which will be a worry for the home fans who saw United lose seven times at Old Trafford in the league last season. There has been little to choose between two ordinary teams, but as it stands the Swans are on course for a first league win at Old Trafford.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
Because of the injury to Lingard we will have three minutes of added time.
45' CONSIDERING A CHANGE
Nani has been told to do some warming up by Van Gaal, who looks like he is considering making a change at the break. There would be plenty of contenders to go off, but the logical choice would be Ashley Young.
43' NO AERIAL THREAT
United lack an aerial presence at set-pieces without the towering figure of Vidic, who was among the best headers of the ball in the Premier League.
40' WASTED FREE-KICK
Routledge gives away a needless free-kick on the right edge of his own area. It's in a dangerous position, but Mata's delivery is poor.
38' SLOW STARTERS
Swansea have lost seven of their last eight opening-day fixtures. It would be a massive boost to Garry Monk's men if they could hold on to their advantage today.
34' MOSES TO STOKE
Breaking news in the Premier League: Stoke have announced the signing of Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
32' NO MERCY
“You're getting sacked in the morning,” is the chant from the Swansea supporters towards Van Gaal. They're an unforgiving bunch, football fans.
29' GOAL DETAILS
It's a great goal from the South Korea midfielder. Swansea broke down the right and Sigurdsson fed Ki, who slotted a low shot into the corner from outside the box.
28' GOAL: UNITED 0 SWANSEA 1
Ki Sung-Yueng gives Swansea a shock lead!
27' NOW YOU SEE IT...
The loudest cheer we have had so far was for the first appearance (or should that be disappearance?) of vanishing spray in the Premier League. A tame Rooney header is catching practice for Fabianski.
27' SWANSEA BOOKING
From the resulting free-kick Fabianski saves comfortably from Mata. Dyer is then booked for a mis-timed sliding tackle on Herrera.
26' FABIANSKI SAVES
United break down the left and a mis-hit cross from Jones almost catches out Fabianksi, who has to tip the ball away from his near post.
24' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Lingard's day is done. Adnan Januzaj comes on as his replacement.
22' BACK IN THE ACTION
Lingard limps to the sidelines and is going to try and continue. It would be a surprise if he is able to run that off.
20' INJURY WOE
Lingard overstretches trying to make a sliding tackle and looks to have a muscle strain or ligament damage around his right knee.
18' EFFORT BLOCKED
Mata and Hernandez combine well to set up Rooney, but his effort from outside the box is well blocked.
16' LEAKING GOALS
Swansea's backline looks nervy today, and with good reason. Their last away shutout came in a 2-0 win at Palace in September, a run of 16 games on the road without a clean sheet.
13' BIG DIPPER
Gylfi Sigurdsson lets fly with a shot from 25 yards that dips just in front of De Gea. United's goalkeeper is right behind it and gathers it well. Rooney gets in a tame shot at the other end.
11' BIG SHOES TO FILL
United's defence has a youthful look to it today. They lost Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in the summer, who had a combined 766 Premier League starts between them.
8' MOBILE FRONTLINE
United have looked lively in the early going. Rooney and Hernandez have been swapping positions frequently and their mobility has been causing problems for the visitors' defence.
6' RELIEF FOR UNITED
A ball from Shelvey picks out Routledge, who would have been clean through had he been able to control the ball.
3' NASTY TACKLE
Jonjo Shelvey fells Ander Herrera and then knees him in the back while the Spaniard is on the floor. Welcome to the Premier League. That was a bit naughty from the former Liverpool man.
2' GO OUT AND WIN
United boss Louis van Gaal has never lacked for self-confidence. What was his message to the players before kick-off? “Do what we have agreed - then we shall win.”
1' HERE WE GO
Swansea kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
For the second successive season Manchester United face Swansea on the opening day with a new manager at the helm. Last August they went to south Wales and hammered the Swans 4-1, but it all turned sour pretty quickly after that for David Moyes. Now it is the turn of former Holland boss Louis van Gaal to show that he has what it takes to fill the considerable shoes of Sir Alex Ferguson. United have invested heavily in the summer and the fans will be desperate for a winning start at home after their woes at Old Trafford last season. If the English bookmakers are to be believed, Swansea are destined to replicate the same mid-table position they enjoyed in 2013-14. But a point here today is surely too big an ask against a United side who will want to send out a positive message of intent. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST (0745EDT), so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Wayne Rooney will be eager to make a good impression having been named in midweek as the man to succeed Nemanja Vidic as United captain. “Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does,” his new manager Louis van Gaal said. “I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role.”
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 11 wins to six by Swansea and five games being drawn. At Old Trafford, United have nine wins and there have been two draws. The corresponding match last season on Jan. 11 saw United win 2-0 with goals from Antonio Valencia (47 mins) and Danny Welbeck (59). That win completed the double for the Red Devils, who had won 4-1 at Swansea on the opening day of last season with two goals apiece for Welbeck and Robin van Persie. Wilfried Bony scored a late consolation in that match, and was also on target with a last-minute winner in the FA Cup third-round tie in January, the 2-1 success being the first the Swans had enjoyed at Old Trafford in their history. Swansea's last win in the league against United home or away came in 1982.
0' FORM GUIDE
United have had an impressive pre-season, beating LA Galaxy, AS Roma, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Valencia and drawing with Inter Milan. Swansea have had a mixed bag of results, beating Plymouth, Exeter and Reading, but losing to Minnesota United, Bournemouth and Villarreal. They've also drawn with Chivas Guadalajara. Swansea finished in 12th last season, 22 points behind United, whose 64-point haul was coincidentally 22 points behind Champions Manchester City. The Red Devils were beaten at home an unthinkable seven times in the league last season.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Holland striker Robin van Persie is not yet fully fit after having time off to recover from his exertions at the World Cup and will miss the match. Luke Shaw (hamstring), Michael Carrick (ankle), Danny Welbeck (knee), Jonny Evans (leg) and Antonio Valencia (leg) are also out. Swansea have Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer available after both missed last week's pre-season finale against Villarreal, Routledge because of a foot injury and Dyer due to the birth of his son. Leon Britton, Marvin Emnes and Jay Fulton are all out with knee injuries.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee was one of just two officials to top the century of yellow cards last season, his 101 cautions some distance off top-ranked Phil Dowd (121). He has also dismissed five players in the league, including then Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm in the derby defeat at Cardiff. Dean also showed a red card in the FA Cup meeting between these sides last season, dismissing United defender Fabio just four minutes after he had come as a 76th-minute substitute. Dean's assistants today are Simon Bennett and Darren England, while Michael Oliver is the fourth official.
