Leicester City vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' WELCOME BACK
A superb game at the King Power Stadium has ended in a 2 - 2 draw, that on the balance of the game was probably a fair result. Everton were by far the better team in the first half, and lead thanks to goals from Naismith and McGeady, either side of a debut goal for Leonardo Ulloa. In the second half, Everton tired, and the introduction of the pacey Jeff Schlupp turned the tie in favour of the home side, with Chris Woods grabbing the equaliser. Both sides pushed for the win, but neither could create the opening they needed.
90' FULL TIME
The game has ended in a draw. Leicester City 2 - 2 Everton
90' GREAT COMMITMENT
Paul Konchesky shows some of the fighting spirit Leicester have displayed today, sprinting 50 yards to close down John Stones, challenging for a ball he had no right to.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
Both sides really want the win now, and they have four minutes in which to get it.
89' OPEN GAME
The game has sprung to life. Kevin Mirallas fizzes a low ball across the box, but a waiting Steven Naismith is denied by a vital interception from Liam Moore.
86' RIGHT PLACE...
Riyad Mahrez does well to cut in from the right, but his powerful effort is blocked. Nugent picks up the rebound, but he is also closed down, only for the ball to break to an unmarked Chris Wood, who finishes superbly down low, past Tim Howard. A much better second half performance from the new boys.
86' GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL
Chris Wood has equalised. Leicester City 2 - 2 Everton.
86' DEFENSIVE SUB
Everton make their second sub as Roberto Martinez looks to shut up shop, with Seamus Coleman replacing Aiden McGeady.
82' EVERTON SUB
Kevin Mirallas takes the place of Steven Pienaar in the Everton midfield.
82' PAINFULL
Phil Jagielka takes the full force of Chris Wood's attempted overhead kick right in the chest. The Leicester man apologises immediately, and Jag is ok to continue after a squirt of magic water.
80' BARRY SHOULD BE OFF
Gareth Barry should have received his marching orders then. He blatantly blocks the run of Riyad Mahrez, when the Leicester man was well past him. He is very lucky he has not been given a second yellow.
78' LEICESTER SUB
Leonardo Ulloa has certainly made a decent start to his Premier League career, but he is withdrawn and replaced by Chris Wood. Wood almost threatens with his first touch, but can't quite control the pass under pressure.
76' MORE EVEN HALF
Everton have lacked some of the urgency they displayed in the first half, allowing Leicester a bit of a foothold in the game. One or two of the Everton players look very tired, and the introduction of Schlupp has certainly lifted the home side.
72' NICE PLAY
It's Leicester City's turn to play some lovely passing football, and James McCarthy is perhaps lucky not to be cautioned for a foul on Riyad Mahrez just as he was about to shoot.
71' KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING
Liam Moore picks up a yellow card for a deliberate handball on the halfway line, when Lukaku looked through on goal. The Everton players are asking for a red, but it would have been harsh so far up the pitch, with Paul Konchesky as cover.
69' EVERTON YELLOW
Gareth Barry picks up his first booking of the season for a late challenge.
66' WHAT A CHANCE
The sub should equalise. Schlupp catches Stones napping, and picks up the perfect through ball, but panics when through on goal and blazes his effort high over the bar. Best chance of the half.
64' LEICESTER SUB
Leicester have brought on Jeff "Mr Versatile" Schlupp in place of Anthony Knockaert. James McCarthy is still off the pitch receiving treatment.
63' OUCH
James McCarthy is down in a heap for Everton. It was a challenge from Anthony Knockaert that lead to the injury, and the replay shows the Leicester man inadvertenly trod on McCarthy's ankle. Looks sore.
61' NEW SKILL?
Steven Pienaar certainly looks like he has been practising the art of the back-heel over the summer. He tries another into the path of Baines, but can't quite gather the return.
59' CHANGE OF TACT
Leicester seemed to be trying to get the ball into the box a little earlier in this second half, and are having some joy. Knockaert was not the ideal target to meet Paul Konchesky's cross and he can't direct the header towards goal.
57' WIDE THREAT
Everton seem to have discovered the right hand side of the pitch, as McGeady makes good ground, showing good feet to cut inside and look for Naismith, but the striker is well marshalled, and the defence can clear their lines.
53' SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER
Leonardo Ulloa gets in front of Phil Jagielka far too easily, but with time and space to direct his header, he hits it wide. Great ball in from Riyad Mahrez.
50' HARD WORK
Leicester have some work to do to turn this game around, although they have won five of their last six opening day fixtures.
46' KICK OFF
Leicester start the second half. Leicester City 1 - 2 Everton.
45' BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD
An entertaining first half has ended with the away side deservedly in front. Leicester have had no answer to the threat from Baines and Pienaar down the left flank, and they were both involved when McGeady finished superbly to give his side the lead. They say that you are most vulnerable just after you score, and this was certainly the case for Everton, as moments after conceding, Ulloa poked the ball home from close range. Everton took the lead once again with the Baines and Pienaar combination, creating the chance for Naismith to finish. Leicester will need to address the Everton threat or they could be in for a long afternoon.
45' HALF TIME
The referee's whistle ends the half. Leicester City 1 - 2 Everton.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
Two minutes of stoppage time are signalled.
45' NO ANSWER
No surprise that the goal once again came down the left flank. A slip from Anthony Knockaert gives Baines the time to pick out Pienaar, who manages to find Naismith whilst tumbling to the floor. Naismith's effort from eight yards smashes off the bar and into Schmeichel's net.
44' GOOOOOOALLLLLLLL
Steven Naismith puts Everton back in front. Leicester City 1 - 2 Everton.
42' TOO MUCH TIME?
For once, a header from Wes Morgan goes wayward, and Naismith has time to pick his spot, but drags it wide with Schmeichel scrambling.
39' LEICESTER SUB
Leicester are forced into an early change. Worryingly for Nigel Pearson, the influential Danny Drinkwater is unable to continue, and is replaced by Dean Hammond.
37' A BIT ONE-SIDED
Everton's attacking players are all very fluid - interchanging positions, and playing neat, intricate passes, although most of the play is coming down the left, with Baines providing the width. Another chance for McGeady, but this one flies over the bar.
34' ONE TOUCH STUFF
Some lovely play down the left between Baines and Pienaar, and the pull back from the latter finds Aiden McGeady, but Wes Morgan throws himself in front of the effort to block.
32' A BIT MORE FEISTY
A bit of a scrappy couple of minutes in the game, with a few fouls from each side, perhaps as the initial excitement of the new season starts to wear off.
29' ROUTE ONE
The Everton defence is struggling to deal with Kasper Schmeichel's long clearances down field. David Nugent almost gets on the end of one, but Howard just gets there first.
25' NO GOAL
Steven Naismith has the ball in the Leicester goal, only to see a raised assistant's flag. The ball had just gone out of play.
22' END TO END
Leicester City go straight down the other end and equalise. They win a corner, and after bouncing around in the six yard box, the ball is toe-poked home by new boy Ulloa. Game on.
22' GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL
Leicester City are immediately back on terms. Leonardo Ulloa pokes home. Leicester City 1 - 1 Everton.
21' GREAT FINISH
The corner is cleared to Baines, who strikes first time from about 40 yards. His effort deflects into the path of Distin, but Schmeichel is out well to block with his feet. The ball falls to McGeady who takes one touch and slots the ball as far into the top corner as it will go, with the Leicester keeper stranded.
21' GOOOOOOALLLLLLL
And that corner ultimately leads to an Everton goal. Aiden McGeady tucks it right into the top corner. Leicester City 0 - 1 Everton.
20' DODGY REF?
Leighton Baines finds a pocket of space down the left flank, and feeds a brilliant ball in behind the defence for Pienaar, but Ritchie De Laet gets out well to defend. And then the ref inexplicably gives a corner.
16' MORGAN'S MINUTE
Wes Morgan threatens twice in quick succession, first putting Howard under some serious pressure from a Drinkwater cross, before lashing an effort wide from the resulting corner.
14' WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
The last match between these two sides was a 1-1 draw at the Walkers Stadium in March 2004, with goals from Wayne Rooney and Marcus Bent.
10' TOO SOFT
Aiden McGeady hits the first shot of the match, but is unable to get any power into it, and Kasper Schmeichel gathers easily.
9' CREATIVE FORCE
Steven Pienaar is at the thick of the action early on, playing a lovely reverse pass into the path of Steven Naismith, but the Scotland striker's pass is just behind Lukaku.
6' EASY STUFF
Tim Howard is the first keeper called into action, making an easy catch from Drinkwater's high floating cross into the box.
5' IN THE WAY
Steven Pienaar tries a smart one-two with Lukaku, but is beaten to the return ball by Wes Morgan.
3' BRIGHT START
The game has begun at a fierce tempo, with Everton having plenty of possession, but the ball has barely left the midfield so far.
1' KICK OFF
Everton get the 2014-15 campaign started for these two sides.
0' INJURY NEWS
Ross Barkley misses out with a ligament injury.
0' TOFFEES TEAM
Everton begin the new campaign with a familiar line up - all 11 played for the club last year, although Barry and Lukaku have now joined permanently. Baines, Jagielka, Distin and Stones are defending Tim Howard's goal, while Barry and McCarthy will occupy the central midfield roles. Pienaar and McGeady will start out wide, with Naismith supporting Lukaku up front.
0' LEICESTER CITY LINE UP
Leicester City line up in a 4-4-2 formation, with record signing Leonardo Ulloa the only new face in the team, alongside David Nugent. Kasper Schmeichel starts in goal, while Liam Moore is prefered to Marcin Wasilewski alongside Wes Morgan at the heart of defence. The full-backs are Ritchie De Laet and Paul Konchesky, with Knockaert, Drinkwater, Kind and Mahrez in midfield.
0' THE SUMMER SO FAR
Leicester were unbeaten in pre-season, a run which included a victory over the Toffees in Bangkok, whilst Martinez' men were a little more unpredictable, losing three out of their five fixtures. Both managers have broken club transfer records to bring in new strikers; Leicester bringing in Leonardo Ulloa from Brighton, and Everton signing last season's loan star Romelu Lukaku for big money. Could it come down to which one of these two men is best able to handle the weight of expectation?
0' MATCH PREVIEW
The Samba Summer is over and the Premier League is back. After a ten year absence, Leicester City are back in the top flight, and they begin their campaign by welcoming Everton to the King Power Stadium. A number of new signings are expected to feature, for a fixture that has ended in a draw on the last four occasions. Join us from 3pm.
