Crystal Palace vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: PALACE 0 MAN UTD 2
United climb above Everton into sixth place after securing their first Premier League away win of 2014. The decisive moment came just after the hour, Marouane Chamakh felling Patrice Evra with a clumsy tackle and Robin van Persie sending Julian Speroni the wrong way from the resulting penalty. Wayne Rooney celebrated the signing of a new megabucks contract with a thumping second six minutes later. RVP also hit the bar for United, who ran out comfortable winners in the end. Palace worked hard, but their gameplan was all about keeping the champions at bay and once they fell behind there was only going to be one winner. Substitute Cameron Jerome went closest for the home side, forcing David de Gea into a fine save less than a minute after coming on.
90' UNITED BOOKING
Giggs fells Ward with a lazy tackle and is cautioned. Dann heads wide from the free-kick.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be four minutes of added time.
88' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United's final switch sees Darren Fletcher come on for Fellaini.
85' PALACE SUBSTITUTION
Tom Ince is replaced by Dwight Gayle. The on-loan midfielder has been mightily disappointing for Palace tonight.
84' COASTING TO VICTORY
United are coasting here, the game is certainly up. Even the decibel level from the Palace fans has dropped.
81' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION
United make a double switch, Antonio Valencia and Ryan Giggs replacing Van Persie and Januzaj.
77' FIERCE STRIKE
Bolasie cuts in from the left and lets fly with a vicious shot, but David de Gea is right behind it.
76' LUCKY ESCAPE
Ward is a little lucky to escape punishment after cynically felling Januzaj. The United man went down easily, but it merited a booking.
74' INCE SHOOTS OVER
Ince works the ball on to his right foot, but balloons an incredibly ambitious attempt from a narrow angle over the bar. Yannick Bolasie replaces Chamakh for Palace.
71' OFF THE CROSSBAR
United almost add a third. Van Persie ducks and weaves before lashing a left-foot drive against the bar, with Speroni comprehensively beaten again.
70' GOAL DETAILS
It's a cracking goal from Rooney. Evra pulled the ball back from the left wing and Rooney nonchalantly swung his right foot at it as if he was on the training ground. The shot arrowed into the top corner past the helpless Speroni.
69' GOAL: PALACE 0 MAN UTD 2
Wayne Rooney blasts a second for United. The points are in the bag.
68' ALMOST AN EQUALISER
Jerome almost levels with his second touch, forcing De Gea into a top-class save low to his left.
67' PALACE SUBSTITUTION
There is the Palace switch: Jerome for Murray.
66' SAVE FROM SPERONI
Mata backheels the ball into the path of Fellaini, whose low drive from the edge of the area is well saved by Speroni.
65' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
Cameron Jerome is getting ready to come on for Palace. We would guess it's for Murray, who is only just back to fitness.
64' SICKENER FOR PALACE
That's a great shame for Palace. It was a real forward's tackle from Chamakh. All that effort gone to waste.
62' GOAL: PALACE 0 MAN UTD 1
Evra limps off very gingerly and Van Persie steps up to beat Speroni from the spot.
61' UNITED PENALTY
Chamakh fells Evra in the box and United have a penalty.
60' AMBITIOUS VOLLEY
Murray meets a long free-kick with a sweetly-struck volley on the turn which would have been a spectacular goal had it found the net. Unfortunately it was too central and De Gea saves easily.
58' UNITED BOOKING
Vidic is the first player in the book, for a cynical foul on Murray trying to redeem the situation after making the initial mistake.
57' CLOSING THE GAP
There are two things to be drawn from the first hour of this match. Manchester United are not going to win the Premier League. And Palace are not going to be relegated. There has certainly been little to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges of this second half.
53' SET-PIECE SPECIALISTS
There's no denying Tony Pulis has made his mark on this Palace team. Some 44 per cent of their goals have come from set-pieces, the highest in the Premier League.
51' POORLY STRUCK
Murray knocks a long ball down perfectly for Puncheon, but he spurns what was a decent chance by toe-ending it in De Gea's direction.
49' EARLY PALACE PRESSURE
Palace win a series of early corners, one of which De Gea is forced to palm over his own crossbar. Ince then shoots, but his effort is always rising and clears the crossbar by some distance.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Palace get the second half under way.
45' HT: PALACE 0 MAN UTD 0
It's goalless at the end of a fairly uninspiring first half. United have been in charge and dominated possession without creating a great deal. Wayne Rooney had their best chance, seeing a perfectly-judged chip headed off the line by Damien Delaney and Nemanja Vidic heading the rebound over the bar. Marouane Fellaini also passed up that great chance just before the interval. David de Gea has made one save for the visitors, keeping out an effort that came off his own defender Chris Smalling.
45' WASTED FREE-KICK
United have a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Rooney lines up for the shot, but his curling effort is well wide.
45' BAD FELLAINI MISS
Fellaini has a glorious chance after combining well with Van Persie and Mata, but his shot from ten yards is well wide of the target. That should have been United in front.
43' A SLOW BURNER
The atmosphere inside Selhurst Park is as good as you will find in the Premier League. Shame you can't say the same about the entertainment on offer tonight. Rooney shoots straight at Speroni from distance.
40' TREATMENT FOR CHAMAKH
Chamakh needs attention after slipping in his own half and colliding with Fellaini. He looked to be in some pain, but is able to continue after treatment.
36' IMPORTANT BLOCK
Rooney collects the ball on the edge of the Palace area, but his turn fails to dislodge Dann, who makes a good block.
35' FLAG UP FOR OFFSIDE
Van Persie thinks he is clean through, but the flag is up for offside. Speroni made a decent save anyway, but the Dutchman's effort lacked conviction. Chamakh heads tamely down towards De Gea at the other end.
32' UNITED MILESTONES
Michael Carrick is appearing in his 400th Premier League match today, for his third different club. It is also Wayne Rooney's 300th top-flight appearance for United.
29' REACTION SAVE
De Gea makes a fine reaction save at his near post to stop an effort that deflected off Smalling from giving Palace an undeserved lead.
26' HEADED OFF THE LINE
United go very close to taking the lead. Rooney collects a loose ball from his own corner and his audacious chip is headed off the line by Delaney. Vidic then heads over from under the crossbar.
23' THE EXTRA MILE
Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak is one of only three outfield players to have played every Premier League minute for their club this season, along with Stoke's Ryan Shawcross and Steven Caulker of Cardiff.
20' FREE TO DO DAMAGE
Mata looks like he has almost been given a free role for United today to do damage from wherever he fancies. He's been popping up in a central position and Palace are having trouble picking him up.
18' GOAL DISALLOWED
Januzaj has the ball in the net, but the whistle had long since gone for handball.
17' ATTACK BREAKS DOWN
Palace break quickly through Ward, but Murray's final pass for Ince is wayward and Vidic snuffs out the danger.
14' ATTACK AGAINST DEFENCE
It's like attack against defence on the training ground in the early going. United are enjoying all the possession, and most of it in the Palace half.
11' FRESH AIR SHOT
Smalling's cross from the right finds its way through to Fellaini, but that was a rusty finish from the Belgian, who found fresh air with his shot.
9' MIDFIELD ROLE
Jonathan Parr has slotted in at full-back for Palace, allowing Joe Ledley to play further forward in his preferred midfield role.
7' UNITED ON TOP
Rooney cushions down a header for Van Persie, who has space but makes a mess of his attempted overhead kick. Januzaj then drags a shot well wide.
6' COLOUR COMMENTARY
Palace are in their familiar red and blue-halved shirts this evening, United are in their change strip of all white.
5' FELLAINI IN THE WAY
Ward works an excellent one-two with Ince but Fellaini blocks off the full-back's run just before he is able to get in a shot.
4' WHAT A WASTE
Ince's set-piece is over-hit by about 15 yards. Oh dear.
3' EARLY CORNER
Murray meets a long diagonal ball from the right with a header that deflects off Smalling for an early corner.
2' SELHURST IS ROCKING
Selhurst Park is really rocking. The stands were a wall of red and blue before kick-off as the fans held up their club-supplied spangly pieces of coloured paper in unison. It was just like watching the Super Bowl, only with 60,000 fewer fans.
1' HERE WE GO
United kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Adnan Januzaj and Juan Mata all start for United, with David Moyes naming an attacking line-up that also sees the return of Marouane Fellaini after injury. Tony Pulis makes two changes to the Palace team, bringing in Jonathan Parr and striker Glenn Murray, who makes his first start in almost a year after injury. Yannick Bolasie and Kagisho Dikgacoi drop to the bench.

0' PREVIEW
David Moyes takes his Manchester United side to Selhurst Park with the stuttering champions looking for a first win in four over a Crystal Palace side rejuvenated under new manager Tony Pulis. Seemingly doomed to relegation earlier in the season, Palace's form has improved so markedly that they would be in the top half of the table were they to win their game in hand at Everton. The Eagles, though, cannot afford to take their foot off the gas as the bottom half of the table is so tight that a defeat and they will be flirting with the drop-zone again. United are listed as 11/1 long-shots with some bookmakers to finish in the top four and as perverse as it might sound, some might argue that this is a game they can afford to lose. There are two reasons behind such flawed logic - on Tuesday the Reds go to Olympiakos in the Champions League, the last competition which they have a chance of winning this season. Also, a 2014-15 season without the distractions of the Europa League would ensure they could rebound strongly, just as Liverpool have done this campaign. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PALACE PLAYERS TO WATCH
While five goals in 21 starts could hardly be called prolific goalscoring form, Marouane Chamakh is only three league goals away from matching his entire output in three seasons at Arsenal. The Morocco frontman netted against West Brom last time out (albeit from the penalty spot) and when that happens he sometimes gets on a roll. Chamakh scored in three successive matches for Palace for the first time in his career earlier in the season and once became the first player in Champions League history to score in six consecutive matches. Still not convinced? Neither am I. Expect midfielder Tom Ince, who scored on his Premier League debut against the Baggies, to have a bigger impact.
0' UNITED PLAYER TO WATCH
Manchester United confirmed this week that Wayne Rooney has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract, understood to be worth around £300,000-a-week. His manager David Moyes said: “He is just 42 goals away from overtaking Sir Bobby [Charlton] our record goalscorer and becoming the first United player to hit 250 goals for the club. These opportunities only come to special players and I'm confident Wayne will set a new record that will take decades to reach.” If Rooney gets the start today, don't be surprised if he starts making early inroads towards Sir Bobby's record.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 20 wins to six by Palace and seven games being drawn. At Selhurst Park, United have seven wins to four by Palace, with a further five meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides on Sep. 14 saw United win 2-0 with goals from Robin van Persie (45th-minute penalty) and Wayne Rooney (81). The game, though, turned on a controversial decision by referee Jon Moss, who sent off Kagisho Dikgacoi when it appeared that United's Ashley Young had gone to ground all too easily. The last time these two sides met at Selhurst Park was in March 2005. The game finished goalless, with another Palace player, Vassilis Lakis, seeing red. Palace haven't beaten United home or away in the Premier League era, losing seven and drawing two. They did, though, score a 2-1 win after extra time in the League Cup fifth round only three seasons ago thanks to a Darren Ambrose blockbuster.
0' FORM GUIDE
Palace start the day in 15th place with 26 points from 25 games, two clear of the relegation zone. United sit seventh with 42 points, 11 behind Liverpool who occupy the fourth and final Champions League qualification place. Palace have somehow managed six wins at home despite only netting 13 goals. Only Norwich (11) and Cardiff and Villa (12) have scored fewer times in front of their own fans. United have not won in three and won just two of their last seven. They did, however, gain a creditable goalless draw at Arsenal last time. The Reds have identical records home and away (W6 D3 L4), but have scored five more goals on the road. Palace beat West Brom last time out. They've won three of their last four.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Jerome Thomas (back) is a doubt for Palace, who nevertheless have been boosted by the return of Glen Murray as a playing substitute against West Brom a fortnight ago after 10 months out with cruciate ligament damage. Phil Jones (calf) is pushing for a return for United after recovering from injury, but fellow defender Jonny Evans (also calf) is doubtful. Marouane Fellaini will be hopeful of seeing some action having not played for two months because of wrist and groin injuries.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Today's referee is Michael Oliver, who made headlines in August 2010 when he took charge of the match between Birmingham City against Blackburn Rovers aged 25 years and 182 days, breaking Stuart Attwell's record as the youngest ever Premier League referee. The Northumberland whistleblower has shown a total of 70 yellow cards in his 18 Premier League games to date this season, second only to Phil Dowd (78). He has also sent off West Ham's Kevin Nolan at Liverpool and Manchester United's Antonio Valencia at Hull. Oliver's assistants today are Stuart Burt and Andy Garratt, while Kevin Friend is the fourth official.
