West Bromwich Albion vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' BAGGIES BOUNCE BACK FOR POINT
Victor Anichebe helped West Bromwich Albion fight back and hold in-form Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns. The Reds went into the break leading thanks to Daniel Sturridge's 50th Premier League goal but a costly mistake by Kolo Toure gifted former Everton man Anichebe the equaliser and a share of the spoils. Brendan Rodgers' had been on course to stretching their unbeaten run to five Premier League matches when took the lead somewhat against the run of play. Philippe Coutinho found Raheem Sterling with a sliderule pass and he winger qucikly moved the ball on to Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan turned and twisted in the box before delivering a fine cross for his striker partner Sturridge, which the England man converted with ease. It was his 13th goal in his last 16 Premier League appearances this season. Albion put up a gritty, determined performance in the second 45 minutes and deservedly restored parity when Toure's shocking square pass fell kindly to the feet of substitute Anichebe who made no mistake from 20-yards, burying his right-foot shot into the bottom corner for only his second goal for the club. The result was Albion's 11th draw of the season and still leaves them in a relegation dog fight while Liverpool moved two points clear of Everton in fourth position.
90' FULL-TIME
West Bromwich Albion fight back to hold in-form Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns.
90' EASY CATCH
Martin Kelly climbs over the top of Victor Anichebe for a free-kick about 28 yards from goal to the left. The ball is swung over, but Simon Mignolet makes an easy catch.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There is still time for a late winner as we enter FOUR added minutes of stoppage time at the Hawthorns.
89' GOING FOR WINNER
Youssouf Mulumbu is held up by Joe Allen as both sides go for the winner. It's been a lively last 20 minutes and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
88' AWKWARD FALL
Billy Jones is forced off the field after falling awkwardly. The ball into the box is headed away and that allows the defender to re-enter the field of play.
86' LUGANO BOOKED
Diego Lugano becomes the fourth West Brom player to be carded by referee Kevin Friend after he brings down Daniel Sturridge.
84' DEFLECTED AWAY
Billy Jones' clearance deflects away for an Albion throw. With time running out Pepe Mel might be thinking about holding on for what will be a valuable point in the battle to stay in the top flight.
82' ANOTHER YELLOW
Youssouf Mulumbu is next to go into referee Kevin Friend's book after hacking down the pacey Raheem Sterling.
80' GERRARD CARDED
Youssouf Mulumbu tries to pull the ball back for Billy Jones but Liverpool clear. Steven Gerrard is then booked for a late challenge on Gareth McAuley. That gets a loud cheer from the home supporters!
78' FOSTER ON TOP
Joe Allen's angled drive is easily held by Ben Foster as Liverpool go for the winner. Moments later the goalkeeper denies Daniel Sturridge and then Raheem Sterling's follow up is blocked.
76' DORRANS ON
Graham Dorrans, who started the first three games of the season, takes the place of Matej Vydra. Pepe Mel seems to be a fan of the striker and has handed him a chance in these final minutes.
74' DOUBLE REDS CHANGE
Joe Allen and Martin Kelly replace Jon Flanagan and Philippe Coutinho as Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers responds to the situation his team find themselves in.
72' SUAREZ IN THE BOOK
The Baggies are unbeaten in three straight matches at home, winning once and drawing twice. They're on the up at the moment and now Luis Suarez is shown a yellow card for a late tackle on Claudio Yacob.
70' ALBION PRESSURE
Martin Skrtel climbs all over Victor Anichebe and the ball into the box is hacked away after Claudio Yacob was left unmarked at the back post. Suddenly it's all West Brom!
68' ALBION GIFTED A GOAL
Kolo Toure holds his hands on his head after gifting West Brom the equaliser at the Hawthorns. The defender's square pass across his own area falls to the feet of substitute Victor Anichebe and the former Everton man makes no mistake from 20-yards, burying his right-foot shot into the bottom corner for only his second goal for the club.
68' GOOOAAALLL!!!
VICTOR ANICHEBE
67' WELL SAVED
Chris Brunt strikes the ball well and low but Simon Mignolet makes an excellent stop to not only make the save but make it stick with Albion players ready to pick up any pieces.
65' RASH TACKLE
Kolo Toure fells Victor Anichebe on the edge of the box and Chris Brunt lines this up.
64' ALBION CHANGE
Martin Skrtel's clearance falls to Chris Brunt on his left boot, but he fails to keep the ball on target. Meanwhile, Pepe Mel sends on Victor Anichebe for Saido Berahino.
62' RIDGEWELL BOOKED
Liam Ridgewell is shown a yellow card by referee Kevin Friend for pulling Raheem Sterling's shirt back down the near side.
60' EXCELLENT SAVE
A great opportunity for Liverpool to add a second goes begging as Luis Suarez gets past Diego Lugano and Liam Ridgewell before seeing his low effort brilliantly blocked by Ben Foster's outstretched left leg.
58' CHANGE IN SYSTEM
Liverpool counter-attack, but Philippe Coutinho is unable to keep his effort on target. Suddenly the game has opened up and the hosts are having a go thanks in large to a change in formation from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2.
55' FINE SAVE
From the resulting corner, Liverpool shot-stopper Simon Mignolet is called into action to deny Gareth McAuley's point-blank header from finding the back of the net.
53' GOOD BLOCK
Youssouf Mulumbu's deep cross is met by Chris Brunt but Jon Flanagan dives in to make an important block and divert the ball away for a corner.
51' WHAT A WASTE
Chris Brunt tries to be cute and find the far corner with a whipped left-footed delivery but the ball flies harmlessly over Simon Mignolet's crossbar.
50' LATE CHALLENGE
Steven Gerrard catches Zoltan Gera on the right edge of the area. The Albion fans demand a yellow card for the Reds skipper but Kevin Friend just awards the free-kick.
48' EARLY PRESSING
Chris Brunt on his weaker right-boot attempts a shot at goal, but the ball flies away for a Liverpool throw instead. Albion have started the half just as they did at the start of the game by pressing their opponents from the front.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Liverpool have won five Premier League matches at The Hawthorns since 2003, keeping a clean sheet in all of them, while scoring 17 times in the process. They're on course for a sixth win this afternoon unless Albion can find some form. The Baggies have won only once in their last 13 Premier League matches going back to early November. They've drawn six and lost six in that time, with the lone victory a 1-0 over Newcastle on New Year's Day.
45' REDS ON TOP AT BREAK
Liverpool go into the break leading West Brom 1-0 thanks to Daniel Sturridge's 50th Premier League goal. Brendan Rodgers' side are on course to stretching their unbeaten run to five Premier League matches and move to within one point of third-placed Chelsea. The visitors took the lead somewhat against the run of play at the Hawthorns. Albion rarely threatened although Youssouf Mulumbu and Zoltan Gera came closest for them. Central defender Jonas Olsson also picked up a hamstring injury and was replaced by Diego Lugano.
45' HALF-TIME
Liverpool lead West Brom 1-0 at the Hawthorns thanks to a goal from England striker Daniel Sturridge.
44' GERA HAS A GO
Zoltan Gera lines one up from the edge of the area and although he cuts across the ball nicely, it flies wide of Simon Mignolet left-hand post. Would have been a picture goal had it hit the back of the net!
42' BITTER BLOW
That Jonas Olsson injury is a bitter blow for Pepe Mel's side because he has been a rock at the back for Albion this season while Uruguayan Diego Lugano looked shaky at the back against Aston Villa in midweek.
41' OLSSON INJURED
Looks like Jonas Olsson has picked up a hamstring injury and he's having to come off the field. Luis Suarez's international team-mate Diego Lugano comes on in his place.
39' IMPORTANT INTERCEPTION
Jonas Olsson makes an important block to deny Aly Cissokho's pass from reaching an unmarked Luis Suarez in the six yard box.
38' AMBITIOUS STRIKE
Philippe Coutinho cleverly steps to his right top open up the angle before lashing his effort wide of Ben Foster's goal.
36' CHEAP FREE-KICK
Liverpool are unbeaten in four Premier League matches, winning three of those. They've netted 13 times in those four contests which will worry West Brom. Saido Berahino is tackled by Steven Gerrard and then the striker tries to win the ball back but brings down Raheem Sterling for a cheap free-kick.
34' GOOD KEEPING
Liverpool almost add a second from Steven Gerrard's inswinging corner from the right. Daniel Sturridge and Kolo Toure take a swing at the ball but goalkeeper Ben Foster spots the danger and immediately dives on top of the ball.
31' COMMANDING MIGNOLET
Liverpool scored with the first shot on target in the game. Gareth McAuley goes up in a crowded area but Simon Mignolet comes off his line to claim the ball.
28' BRUNT DELIVERY
The Reds won their last away match (at Stoke) and are looking for their first set of back-to-back Premier League away wins this season. Albion look for an immediate response but Chris Brunt's delicious cross is headed away.
25' BREAKTHROUGH FOR LIVERPOOL
The visitors take the lead somewhat against the run of play at the Hawthorns. Philippe Coutinho finds Raheem Sterling and he plays the ball to Luis Suarez in the box. The Uruguayan turns and twists before finding his striker partner Daniel Sturridge with a clever cross which he converts with ease. That's his 13th goal in his last 16 Premier League appearances this season. It's also a landmark 50th in the top flight for the England man.
25' GOOOAAALLL!!!
DANIEL STURRIDGE
24' VOCAL BACKING
West Brom had some recent success against Liverpool before their last match, winning four out of five Premier League meetings with the Reds dating back to April 2011. They've made a confident start to today's game and the home supporters are acknowledging that by giving them plenty of vocal backing. This game has yet to sparkle with the visitors happy to keep possession at the back.
21' LACKLUSTRE REDS
Back in October Liverpool rolled past West Brom 4-1 at Anfield with Luis Suarez scoring a hat-trick in the match. Brendan Rodgers' side haven't made the best of starts to today's match and look slightly lacklustre after their Merseyside derby victory in midweek. Former Watford man Matej Vydra fails to keep the ball in play on the far side.
19' GOOD BLOCK
The Baggies cause havoc in the Liverpool box from a high, hanging corner and Youssouf Mulumbu's right-footed stinger is well blocked by Steven Gerrard. The ball looked to be heading wide in any case.
17' NEEDLESS YELLOW CARD
Unsurprisingly, Claudio Yacob goes into referee Kevin Friend's book after another late tackle. This time on Reds skipper Steven Gerrard.
15' CHANCE FOR SUAREZ
Claudio Yacob gets an early warning from referee Kevin Friend after making one too many dangerous tackles. A deflected pass finds Luis Suarez through the middle and rather take the defender on, he checks and looks for Raheem Sterling in the middle instead. However, Albion get enough defenders back to make the clearance.
12' NO SPACE AND TIME
Jonas Olsson makes a crunching tackle on young Raheem Sterling which gets a round of applause from the home supporters. Youssouf Mulumbu then works hard to break-up the play and deny Philippe Coutinho any room to manoeuvre.
9' POOR FREE-KICK AND CORNER
Luis Suarez is unable to lift the ball over the Albion wall from 25 yards out. From the resulting corner, Steven Gerrard over-hits his delivery and it travels out for a throw to the home side.
7' OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers already has his notebook out as his side look to counter-attack through Raheem Sterling but his run is brought to an immediate halt by defender Liam Ridgewell on halfway. The hosts are looking to press their opponents but Claudio Yacob jumps into Luis Suarez and Liverpool earn a free-kick within shooting distance.
5' BRIGHT START
Albion are keeping early possession well and almost sneak in as Jon Flanagan and Martin Skrtel make a mess of a high bouncing ball in the box. The pitch is very lively considering the amount of rain there has been in the West Midlands overnight.
3' DIFFERENT SYSTEMS
West Brom boss Pepe Mel has set up with a 4-4-2 system with Saido Berahino and Matej Vydra up front. Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers has set his side up with a 4-2-3-1 system and he will want his front four players to sparkle from the start. Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have all been in blistering form of late.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then at the Hawthorns. The pitch is in decent condition while the weather is pretty chilly but the sun is out in what is the highest football ground in the country. Albion are wearing their traditional home kit while Liverpool - followed by a large number of supporters - are in their red strip. The Reds have scored 37 first half goals this season, 10 more than West Brom have in the Premier League so far this season.
0' WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Head coach Pepe Mel has made five changes to his side which lost 4-3 to local rivals Aston Villa on Wednesday night. Billy Jones starts at full-back while Gareth McAuley partners Jonas Olsson in central defence. Zoltan Gera comes into midfield while leading scorer Saido Berahino partners Matej Vydra up front. The hosts are without former Liverpool striker Nicolas Anelka. The French veteran has had around seven stitches in a knee injury suffered in the defeat at Villa Park.
0' LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS
Unsurprisingly Reds boss Brendan Rodgers names an unchanged starting XI from the side which dismantled Everton 4-0 in the Merseyside derby on Tuesday night. Joe Allen does return to the matchday squad after missing the last two games because of a hamstring problem and takes his place on the bench.
0' WEST BROM TEAM

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Liverpool travel to struggling West Brom on Sunday afternoon looking to reinforce their place in the Premier League top-four. The Reds blitzed neighbours Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield last week, with the attacking threat of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge proving too much for them in a comprehensive 4-0 victory. The Uruguayan now has 23 goals for the season whilst Sturridge has scored 17 in 18 games as the pair continue to leave a trail of destruction across pitches. Brendan Rodgers' side have already racked up 57 goals, 17 more than they had after this stage last season and remain on course to end their Champions League exile. For West Brom, a relegation scrap appears ominous after their crazy 4-3 West Midlands derby defeat at Aston Villa. New Baggies coach Pepe Mel faces a daunting test against their rampant opponents although The Hawthorns has proved a difficult ground for teams in the top ten this season with Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle having all dropped points there. 0' MEL READY FOR CHALLENGE
West Brom head coach Pepe Mel is ready to pit his wits against a Liverpool side spearheaded by a forward he believes may be the best in the world in Luis Suarez. "Suarez is in fantastic form, there aren't many players like him," said Mel. "In my opinion he is in the top one or two forwards in the world at the moment. But just as important as Suarez is Steven Gerrard, because it's Gerrard who provides the passes for Suarez in the first place." Mel's side sit just above West Ham, who the bottom three, on goal difference and while the former Real Betis boss has admitted they are in a relegation battle, he is wary of letting it affect their focus. "I believe we're strong enough to avoid relegation," he said. "For me it's important only to look in front of us and focus on the next game. We need the points, of course, but we need to produce a lot of hard work to get them."
0' EARLY WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Albion will be without striker Nicolas Anelka when they face his former club. The French veteran has had around seven stitches in a knee injury suffered in Wednesday's derby defeat by Aston Villa and will consequently miss the visit of the Reds. Fellow forward Stephane Sessegnon (groin) is head coach Pepe Mel's only other absentee.
0' RODGERS: REDS HAVE GROWN
The same fixture last term was Brendan Rodgers' first league game as Liverpool manager, and a disappointing one for the Northern Irishman as Albion ran out 3-0 winners. Reflecting on the club's progress since then, he said: "We've grown. If I look back at my time here over the last 18 months, I look back at the first game we played against West Brom and where we were at then was we had some talented players but we were very much a group of individuals. Over the course of 18 months, we've implemented a method to our play and we have become a team. We're understanding the game much better in terms of how we want to work and how we want to play. The important trait in any successful team is character, and we have got that in bucketloads. It's something that makes me very happy, but we've still got a way to go."
0' EARLY LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS
Joe Allen is set to return to Liverpool's matchday squad for the clash at The Hawthorns. Allen has missed the last two games because of a hamstring problem, but manager Brendan Rodgers has said the midfielder will be back this weekend. The Reds still have Daniel Agger, Mamadou Sakho, Jose Enrique, Glen Johnson and Lucas Leiva all unavailable due to injury.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee in charge of this encounter is Kevin Friend from Leicestershire. In the 10 matches he has taken charge of he has shown 34 yellow cards and one red. His assistants along the touchline will be Richard West and Adrian Holmes while Lee Mason will act as fourth official.
