Newcastle United vs. Sunderland
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME REPORT
Sunderland ran out 3-0 winners at St James' Park for the second time in two seasons as goals from Fabio Borini, Adam Johnson and Jack Colback ensured another miserable game for Alan Pardew. The game started explosively, with both sides having a couple of chances. With only four minutes on the clock Marcos Alonso should have put the visitors ahead, but he could only head over from six yards out from Johnson's free kick. It was only 15 minutes before they did go in front though - and Johnson was involved yet again. He chipped the ball between two Toon players and found Phil Bardsley in the box. The full back was brought down by Vurnon Anita for what was a stonewall penalty. Fabio Borini converted excellently into the roof of the net to send the travelling fans into raptures. They didn't have time to recover before it was 2-0. Jack Colback's deflected shot was palmed into the path of Johnson by Krul, and the winger had the easy task stroking the ball into the empty net. Newcastle woke up a little after that goal, but couldn't find a way through a stubborn Sunderland defence. The hosts came out in the second half and were the better side for a period, but couldn't find a goal that would get them back in the game. Cheick Tiote had a few efforts from distance and forced Vito Mannone into some great saves, but the Italian was not to be beaten. On 66 minutes Johnson came close to grabbing a second, but his shot smacked the post after a great solo run. The game was ended as a contest after 80 minutes - Borini ran from the half-way line and fed in Colback, who fired across Krul and into the top corner, to give Gus Poyet a second win in his second North East derby. Full time and it's Newcastle 3-0 Sunderland.
90' FULL TIME
The game ends and for the second time in less than a year, Sunderland beat Newcastle 3-0 at St James' Park.
90' THREE MINUTES
There will be three minutes of added time here.
89' CHANGE
Fabio Borini comes off for Sunderland and on comes Craig Gardner.
88' TIRED
The home players seem to have just given up now. Luuk de Jong's grounded cross from the left is poor and can only find a yellow body. The ball is cleared upfield.
85' COMFORTABLE
Mathieu Debuchy crosses the ball from the right as the hosts look to find some consolation on what has been a terrible day for the Toon. His delivery only finds the gloves of Vito Mannone though.
83' TROUBLE
Newcastle win a free kick and from the bad Liam Bridcutt challenge there's a coming together. Phil Dowd calms it down as the hosts line up the free kick. It's a poor delivery though.
80' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's 3-0 and it's a repeat of last season as it stands! Dreamland for the visiting fans who probably can't believe it's happening again. JACK COLBACK notches the goal, firing across Krul and into the roof of the net. Boos echo around St James' Park as fans make their way to the exits.
78' FIRST CHANGE
With only 12 minutes remaining on the clock, Poyet finally makes his first change, bringing off Adam Johnson - who is booed by the home fans - in place of Swede Sebastian Larsson.
76' NO ONE THERE
The ball is worked out to Adam Johnson, who has been incredible for the visitors today. He whips a right-footed cross towards the far post, but no man in yellow has made a run there, and the ball bounces out for a throw-in.
74' FINAL CHANGE
Vurnon Anita's game is over and on comes Sylvain Marveaux in what is Alan Pardew's final change. Gus Poyet still has the luxury of three substitutes left, if he needs to use them.
72' GREAT BLOCK
A superb pass finds Shola Ameobi in the box. The Nigerian takes a heavy touch and stretches to try and knock the ball past the onrushing Vito Mannone. Ameobi reaches the ball first but his shot is well blocked by Mannone and goes out for a corner.
69' AMBITIOUS
Swansea loanee Sung-Yueng Ki goes for an audacious effort from 25 yards, but his shot catches the wind and swings away for a goal kick. That would have been a sensational goal, had it gone in.
68' SUB
Alan Pardew makes his second change of the game and brings on Paul Dummett in place of Davide Santon - an odd change to make when you're 2-0 down. Santon must have picked up a slight knock.
66' OFF THE POST
Adam Johnson comes so close to scoring what would be quite a superb individual goal. He takes the ball past one man, and then dummies it to beat another, before letting fly with a low shot that cannons off the post. That would have been game over.
64' SUPERB SAVE
Vito Mannone has been in good form as of late and pulls of a great save here to deny Cheick Tiote a place on the scoresheet. The Ivorian midfielder runs with the ball, before pulling the trigger. His shot is top corner-bound but Mannone dives across and punches the ball behind.
60' SO CLOSE
Sunderland comes very close to making it 3-0 and really embarrassing newcastle, yet again. Jack Colback controls the ball well and strikes with his left foot. His shot is no more than a foot wide as Krul watches it go by his post.
58' PLUCKED
Cheick Tiote - like he usually does - tries his luck with a shot from range. He opts to bend the ball, rather than smash it on this occasion. His effort is bound for the corner, but the lack of pace on it means Vito Mannone can jump and pluck it from the air.
55' JUST OVER
Cheick Tiote commits a foul 25 yards out and Sunderland have a free kick in a dangerous position. Adam Johnson tries his luck but his effort is curled just over Krul's crossbar.
52' FIRST EFFORT
The Dutch forward gets his first shot of the game in but it's easily dealt with by Vito Mannone. He received the ball from Ameobi, took a touch and fired his effort towards goal. The hosts have started positively in this second period.
49' FREE KICK
The hosts win an early free kick 30 yards out, but it comes to nothing. Hatem Ben Arfa strikes the ball with power but it's blocked. It eventually finds its way out wide and is crossed by the Frenchman. It bobbles about but it's finally cleared by the visitors.
46' SECOND HALF
The second half is underway here in Newcastle. Just one change and it's for the hosts. Sammy Ameobi goes off after a quiet half and is replaced by debutant Luuk de Jong. It'll be interesting to see how he adapts to life in England after a successful spell in Holland and a tough time in Germany.
45' HALF TIME REPORT
Sunderland went into the break 2-0 up thanks to goals from Fabio Borini and Adam Johnson. You can't argue they don't deserve it, as they have been the better side from the off. Half time and Newcastle have it all to do.
45' HALF TIME
Phil Dowd blows his whistle to signal half time. That couldn't have come quickly enough for Alan Pardew, who's got a real job on his hands now.
44' FIRED OVER
Shola Ameobi tries his luck again but this time can't even force a save out of Mannone. He sets himself, but sends a high drive way over the bar. Newcastle have a minute to try and rescue a goal before half time.
42' SOFT SHOT
Shola Ameobi - who has more goals against Sunderland than any other side (seven) - tries his luck from 25 yards. His effort is tame and bounces into the hands of Vito Mannone.
40' SET-PIECE
Mike Williamson clumsily brings down Jack Colback which gives the Black Cats a free kick in hazardous territory. Adam Johnson takes a free kick which is in contention for worst of the season. Marcos Alonso retrieves the ball and has a dig, but his effort is blocked and goes out for a throw.
38' EASY SAVE
Jozy Altidore, who has a lot to prove to Sunderand fans, gets into the box and somewhat fortuitously gets by four players before getting a snapshot off. It's straight at Krul though, and the Dutch stopper gets down to smother.
35' SHOOT WHEN THEY CAN
Sunderland's defence is backing off a lot, which is allowing the hosts to shoot when they get the chance. The middle of the defence is packed, meaning the wing is the only other option. Moussa Sissoko gets a shot off which is blocked. He's mirroring the performances of team-mate Cheick Tiote today, shooting from range whenever he can.
33' HEADED OVER
The visitors attack again and Marcos Alonso gets into a good position on the left-hand flank. He curls a cross over which is met by the head of Johnson. The ex-City winger's effort goes harmlessly over the bar, however.
31' CYNICAL FOUL
Sunderland win a free kick on the right wing and Mathieu Debuchy goes into the book. Adam Johnson has proved hard to deal with so far. He whips the free kick into the box but Wes Brown is deemed to have pushed Mike Williamson when going for the ball, and is penalised. Free kick to Newcastle.
29' GOOD SPELL
This is better from the hosts They're getting the ball around well and are making Sunderland chase the ball. Davide Santon's promising cross is headed away by John O'Shea. It eventually comes back to Santon who shoots, only for it to be saved by Mannone and put out for a corner.
26' LOSES IT
Sammy Ameobi shows off his fine footwork and charges forward, which raises the volume in the ground. He fails to spot the run of Davide Santon on the left, and loses the ball to Wes Brown. Newcastle are turning up the tempo now and need to score the next goal.
23' GOOOAAALLL!!!
ADAM JOHNSON makes it 2-0! Jack Colback ran at the defence and got a shot off, which was deflected. Krul got a hand to it but could only palm it into the path of Johnson who fired home into the empty net. 2-0 and this could get worse than last season.
19' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Sunderland take the lead and it's FABIO BORINI who converts the spot kick. He strolls up and despatches the pen like a seasoned pro. it was a terrible challenge from Vurnon Anita when he hauled down Phil Bardsley in the box. Borini is booked for his over-enthusiastic celebrations.
19' PENALTY
Penalty for Sunderland!
17' WAY OVER
Sunderland get down the other side of the pitch and Steven Taylor gives away a free kick in a great position. The set-piece is laid off to Phil Bardsley, but the full back smashes a shot high and wide.
15' OVER THE BAR
The hosts get a corner which Hatem Ben Arfa takes short to Davide Santon. He gets it back and draws two defenders allowing Santon to get in space. He plays it back to the Italian defender who lines up a shot, but his effort sails over the bar.
13' NO PRISONERS
Phil Dowd isn't taking any prisoners today and issues John O'Shea with an early booking for handball. Sammy Ameobi flicked the ball over him and O'Shea handled. From the free kick, Davide Santon can only curl it into the hands of Vito Mannone. Easy for the Italian.
12' FOUL
Sunderland look dangerous as Sung-Yueng Ki whips a cross in which is sent behind for a corner. The South Korean takes the corner, but as it reaches the far post, Fabio Borini brings down Mike Williamson and the hosts get a free kick.
10' PRESSURE
Sunderland spray the ball around well at the back, but Sammy Ameobi busts a gut to close the defence down and makes them panic. He succeeds in doing so and John O'Shea gives the ball away. That's the kind of work rate the fans will love.
8' FLAG STAYS DOWN
Sunderland have a half-chance here as the flag stays down from Adam Johnson's long, lofted cross from 40 yards. Fabio Borini makes a stunning run but takes his eye off the ball and can't make a connection with it. Tim Krul comes to catch. This match has started ferociously.
4' WHAT A CHANCE
The visitors should be a goal up here. Phil Bardsley does well down the right and draws a foul from Vurnon Anita. Adam Johnson takes the resulting free kick and finds Marcos Alonso six yards out, unmarked, but he can only head over the bar. What a fantastic chance to make himself a hero.
2' CROWD GOING
Newcastle start well and Mathieu Debuchy shoots wide as he gets into the box. The full-back notched his only Toon goal against Sunderland this season. On this occasion, he could only drag his effort wide after receiving the ball from Sammy Ameobi.
1' UNDERWAY
This North East derby is underway as Newcastle kick us off, looking to avenge the 2-1 defeat they suffered in October.

0' PREVIEW
It's one of the most hotly-contested games in Britain this afternoon as Newcastle host Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby. New signings will be on show today as the transfer window slammed shut at 11pm last night. Newcastle will be starting life without Yohan Cabaye as the midfield maestro completed a £19m move to PSG, but loan signing Luuk de Jong could go straight into the side for today's game. For the visitors, midfielder Liam Bridcutt and forward Ignacio Scocco may be in line to make their debuts in tomorrow's derby. The Wear-Tyne derby back in October saw Sunderland prevail 2-1 thanks to a late Fabio Borini winner in only Gus Poyet's second game as manager, making him an instant hero with fans.
0' DOOM AND GLOOM
Newcastle have lost the last two meetings with Sunderland. Earlier in the season they just lost out at the Stadium of Light, and at the back and of last season, they were hammered 3-0 in Paolo Di Canio's second game – each goal sparked wild celebrations from the controversial Italian. And as if losing one key man in Cabaye wasn't bad enough, the North East outfit were informed that Loic Remy's red card against Norwich will not be rescinded, meaning the French loanee starts his three-game ban tomorrow. It gets worse for Newcastle fans – the Toon have lost all of their previous three games at St James' Park, with their last win being a 5-1 win over Stoke at the end of December.
0' GOOD FORM
It wasn't so long ago that Sunderland were rock bottom of the league and everybody's favourite for relegation. The Black Cats are now up to 17th after a run of eight games which have seen them lose just once, coupled with three wins and four draws. Sunderland's away form has been key to their recent success – they've picked up points in each of their last five games on the road, a run stretching back to the end of November. The memories of the 3-0 triumph in April will still be fresh in the minds of everyone associated with Sunderland and they'll be hoping for a repeat performance this weekend.
0' KEY PLAYERS
With one key player having just left and the other suspended – both being their top scorers incidentally – Alan Pardew will have to turn to Yoan Gouffran for goals this weekend. The French former Bordeaux forward has bagged six goals in the league this term, but it's dried up on the forward line recently. He hasn't found the back of the net since the victory over Stoke. Tim Krul has put in some astounding performances this season while Hatem Ben Arfa has also been in good form. For Sunderland, Adam Johnson is very much the man of the moment. He has scored or assisted Sunderland's last seven goals in the Premier League and is in the form that saw him gain a move to Man City. Swansea loanee Ki Sung-Yeung has impressed, as has Phil Bardsley.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last season's Tyne-Wear derby was Sunderland's first victory at St James' Park in over 13 years. You'd have to go back to 2000 for the time previous that the Black Cats picked up maximum points. Results have been split fairly evenly over the last few years between the two. Newcastle's last home victory was a 5-1 win over a team beginning with ‘S' who play in red and white stripes. Coincidentally, the last time they beat Sunderland on home turf was when Kevin Nolan netted a hat-trick in the famous 5-1 win back in 2010. Should the visitors claim three points, it will be their 20th league win at St James' Park.
0' REFEREE
Phil Dowd is the man in charge of today's big North East encounter. He was the official who oversaw the 5-1 thrashing at St James' Park the other year. In that game he handed out nine yellows cards and sent off Titus Bramble. So far this term he's issued a total of 96 cards in his 22 appearances – 94 of those have been bookings. He's taken charge of the Black Cats twice this season, and both those games have ended in defeat for Poyet's men. Of his three Newcastle games, they have ended in a win, a draw and a loss for the Magpies.
