Aston Villa vs. West Bromwich Albion
Minute Commentary
90' VILLA WIN DERBY THRILLER
Aston Villa have given themselves some breathing space, moving away from the relegation zone after a pulsating 4-3 derby day victory against their local rivals West Brom. The West Midlands' top two sides shared six goals between them in one of the Premier League's greatest ever first-half's of football you're ever likely to see. The Baggies raced into a two goal lead in eight minutes as Chris Brunt and a Fabian Delph own goal handed them a dream start. Brunt found the back of the net with a stunning half-volley from 30-yards while Delph put into his own net after a dangerous low cross from James Morrison. Andreas Weimann pulled a goal back after 12 minutes, cleverly lifting the ball over Ben Foster and then 12 minutes later Leandro Bacuna restored parity with a deflected effort at the back post. Delph atoned for his own goal with a crackerjack of a strike to hand Paul Lambert's side the lead, but just as it seemed that would be last action of the half, Youssouf Mulumbu stole in to fire under the advancing Brad Guzan and ensure Albion went into the break all-square. An epic encounter was settled after just one second half goal scored just after the hour mark by Christian Benteke. The big Belgian was brought down in the area for a penalty by Diego Lugano and he picked himself up and dusted himself down to send Ben Foster the wrong way. Villa move into the top half of the table - eight points clear of the drop zone while Albion remain just three points ahead of 18th-placed West Ham.
90' FULL-TIME
It's been a seven-goal thriller at the Villa as the hosts hold on to beat their second city neighbours West Brom 4-3.
90' FOSTER FORWARD
Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster goes forward as Chris Brunt sends the ball in, but Villa manage to clear their lines.
90' HOLT BOOKED
Grant Holt is next to be shown a yellow card for trying to fool Mark Clattenburg. We're into FOUR MINUTES of stoppage time at Villa Park after a pulsating derby game.
87' OLSSON CARDED
Jonas Olsson is shown a yellow card for saying something to referee Mark Clattenburg off the ball.
86' FABULOUS TACKLE
Matej Vydra takes on Ron Vlaar but the big Dutch defender makes an outstanding tackle to deny the Czech player a route to goal.
85' FLAG UP
Claudio Yacob's long ball looks to find Saido Berahino's run, but the flag goes up on the near side. We're in for a tense final couple of minutes at Villa Park.
83' SOLID HEADER
Nathan Baker wins an important header and Yacouba Sylla gets Christian Benteke motoring. Villa are desperately trying to keep possession as Albion press them all over the park.
80' MORE CHANGES
Matej Vydra comes on for Victor Anichebe as Albion make another change while Villa boss Paul Lambert hopes to shut up shop by sending on Nathan Baker for Andreas Weimann.
77' COUPLE OF CHANGES
Saido Berahino comes on for Steven Reid for Albion while Karim El Ahmadi is replaced by Yacouba Sylla.
76' ANICHEBE GOES CLOSE
Victor Anichebe cracks his right-foot piledriver wide of the far post with Brad Guzan beaten. The striker holds his hands on his head in disbelief.
74' BENTEKE APPEAL
Christian Benteke goes over Ben Foster's challenge but referee Mark Clattenburg is not having any of it and waves play on.
73' BRUNT BOOKED
Chris Brunt goes into the book for hacking down Fabian Delph. That gets a big cheer from the home fans.
72' LUGANO BOOKED
Diego Lugano is shown a yellow card for pulling Ciaran Clark's shirt back.
69' UNFORTUNATE WEIMANN
Andreas Weimann races down on goal and his strike hits Fabian Delph on the back. Albion are let off the hook as the atmosphere picks up again at Villa Park with over 46,000 supporters packed in for this derby game.
66' HOLT COMES ON
Grant Holt will attack the Holte End as he comes on for Ashley Westwood.
64' BENTEKE FIRES VILLA AHEAD
Christian Benteke gets his name on the scoresheet after burying his right-footed sidefooter into the bottom right-hand corner with Ben Foster diving the other way.
64' GOOOAAALLL!!!
CHRISTIAN BENTEKE
63' PENALTY TO VILLA
Diego Lugano brings down Christian Benteke in the box and referee Mark Clattenburg immediately points to the spot.
62' DENIED A CORNER
Claudio Yacob is back in the action while Morgan Amalfitano is denied a corner for his side. The Albion supporters are unhappy with that decision.
60' YACOB INJURY
Claudio Yacob goes to ground holding his shoulder after bumping into Andreas Weimann. The medical team are on quickly to look after him.
58' PENALTY APPEALS
Morgan Amalfitano wriggles clear of a couple of Villa defenders before going to ground. However, referee Mark Clattenburg waves away appeals and play carries on.
55' GOLDEN CHANCE
It would be a major early boost for Pepe Mel's tenure if he could guide West Brom to victory over their local rivals. They've made an assured start to this half and are slowly taking control again. Chris Brunt's free-kick finds an unmarked Diego Lugano at the back post, but he somehow misses the target!
52' RAIN LASHING DOWN
Villa boss Paul Lambert has a few problems doing up his winter coat as the rain lashes down at Villa Park. Perfect weather for a derby! Meanwhile, there is a different look to this encounter with the pace of the opening 45 minutes taken out of this half.
49' DELPH FRUSTRATION
West Brom have won only eight of 36 midlands derby games in Premier League history (drawing 14 and losing 14). Fabian Delph wastes a chance to find an unmarked Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke in the middle after over-hitting his left-footed cross.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
What kind of second half are we in for at Villa Park I wonder? Villa had scored just eight goals at Villa Park this season before the start of this game. The hosts get us underway and they will be attacking the famous Holte End.
45' GOALS GALORE IN MIDLANDS DERBY
Let's hope the end-to-end action carries on into the second-half.
45' HALF-TIME
Aston Villa and midlands neighbours West Brom share six goals between them in one of the greatest Premier League first-half's of action.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
We're into THREE added minutes of added time in this ding-dong derby.
43' MULUMBU ON TARGET
James Morrison cleverly slips the ball through for Youssouf Mulumbu who fires his low drive under the advancing Brad Guzan and into the back of the net. Six goals in one half of Premier League football. It's been a dream derby!
43' GOOOAAALLL!!!
YOUSSOUF MULUMBU
42' WHAT A SAVE
Christian Benteke is put clean through on goal but is denied the chance to put Villa four goals up after a brilliant save from Ben Foster.
41' ALBION STRETCHED
Villa boss Paul Lambert was jumping up and down after that Fabian Delph goal to put his side ahead. The Baggies are so stretched at the back as Christian Benteke looks to run riot. Pepe Mel has a job on his hands to sort his side out at the break.
38' MAGNIFICENT STRIKE
Aston Villa have fought back from two goals down to lead 3-2 at Villa Park in an astonishing first half of action. Fabian Delph collects a diagonal ball before turning Steven Reid inside out and lashing his left-foot strike in off the underside of the crossbar.
38' GOOOAAALLL!!!
FABIAN DELPH
37' SPECTACULAR ATTEMPT
Andreas Weimann works so hard to earn Villa a corner. Christian Benteke attempts the spectacular from Ashley Westwood's delivery, but totally misses the ball.
35' BENTEKE HELD
Referee Mark Clattenburg awards Villa a free-kick after Christian Benteke is held by Steven Reid. Ashley Westwood pings it into the area but there's an infringement against the home side.
33' PRESSING HIGH
Villa are pressing high looking to win the ball back off Albion. The visitors hit a long ball into the box for Claudio Yacob, but his flicked header falls harmlessly wide of Brad Guzan's far post.
31' ANICHEBE STRUGGLING
The derby between these sides ended 2-2 earlier in the season, but with only half an hour gone in this game, what are the chances of this game ending like this? Highly unlikely, surely! Victor Anichebe is now hobbling about after picking up a knock.
28' ANELKA COMES OFF
West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka is replaced by Morgan Amalfitano after his injury. He was caught by Matthew Lowton which is the reason he has had to come off.
25' VILLA LEVEL IT UP
Christian Benteke finds Matt Lowton who is free to his right and his low cross is turned home via a deflection at the back post by Leandro Bacuna. It's a sensational derby at Villa Park!
25' GOOOAAALLL!!!
LEANDRO BACUNA
25' ANELKA INJURY
Nicolas Anelka comes over to the sideline for some medical attention. There is blood pouring from his leg and he might not be back. Meanwhile, Villa get on with the game and are starting to turn the screw on their opponents.
23' PLENTY OF ACTION
From the resulting corner Andreas Weimann flicks the ball towards goal but Ben Foster dives across his goal to make a good save. At the other end James Morrison curls his right-footed effort well wide of Brad Guzan's far post.
21' LIVELY DERBY
Leandro Bacuna tries to lob Ben Foster from the left edge of the area, but the ball loops up into the air and Jonas Olsson is forced to clear for a corner.
19' INCHES WIDE
Andreas Weimann is in the mood tonight and turns away from Jonas Olsson before picking out Leandro Bacuna in the middle, but his low right-footed drive misses the near post by a matter of inches.
17' WELL HELD
The Baggies earn a free-kick about 30 yards from goal and Nicolas Anelka's effort is a gift for goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
15' UNLUCKY BERTRAND
Ryan Bertrand twists and turns before seeing his low ball deflected away to an Albion player and they can bring the ball out. Suddenly the noise has picked up a couple more decibel levels!
12' RAPID VILLA RESPONSE
A long ball downfield by Brad Guzan is flicked on by a West Brom defender and the ball falls kindly for Andreas Weimann, who takes a touch before cleverly lifting the ball over Ben Foster and into the back of the net. What a start to this derby!
12' GOOOAAALLL!!!
ANDREAS WEIMANN
8' ALBION IN DREAMLAND
The visitors are two goals up in no time at Villa Park and the hosts have been shocked! The Baggies work a quick free-kick down the left for James Morrison and his low cross is unfortunately turned into his own net by Fabian Delph.
8' OWN GOOOAAALLL!!!
FABIAN DELPH
7' GOOD GOALKEEPING
After a bright start from Villa, it's Albion who are dominating possession and the early chances. Brad Guzan is alert to come off his line and collect the ball ahead of Chris Brunt.
4' A WONDER STRIKE
What a stunning goal for Albion who take the lead in the big derby! A quite astonishing left-footed effort from 30 yards on the half-volley from Chris Brunt. Brad Guzan has no chance with the ball flying past him into the far corner.
4' GOOOAAALLL!!!
CHRIS BRUNT
3' DIFFERENT SYSTEMS
Villa have set up in a 4-2-3-1 system and manager Paul Lambert will want his side to put their opponents on the back foot from the start. Meanwhile, new Albion boss Pepe Mel has set his side up in a 4-4-2 formation with Nicolas Anelka and Victor Anichebe working in tandem. The Baggies have won only eight of 36 midlands derby games in Premier League history - drawing 14 and losing 14. The rain has been teeming it down which should make for a good derby encounter.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then! Aston Villa are in their traditional claret and blue home kit while the visitors are in their usual number. The atmosphere inside Villa Park is superb for this huge derby clash while the pitch is looking lush and green. Villa have only lost six of 29 second city derbies, against West Brom and Birmingham City in the Premier League so they will be firm favourites ahead of this one despite their poor home form.
0' ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor misses the local derby with a foot injury so Matthew Lowton replaces him. Leandro Bacuna takes his place in the line-up behind forwards Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke. Loan signing Grant Holt has to settle for a place on the bench along with defender Nathan Baker, who is available again following concussion.
0' WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Pepe Mel makes two changes to the side which drew 1-1 with Everton last time out. Youssouf Mulumbu and Victor Anichebe come into the starting XI for Zoltan Gera and Matej Vydra. Hungarian star Gera fails to even make the matchday squad. Nicolas Anelka takes his place in attack. Defender Gareth McAuley (hamstring) has to settle for a place in the bench.

Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Bertrand, Westwood, El Ahmadi, Delph, Bacuna, Weimann, Benteke. SUBSTITUTES: Steer, Baker, Sylla, Helenius, Albrighton, Holt, Tonev.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Clashes between the West Midlands' top two sides have been exciting in recent years, not least at The Hawthorns earlier this season when Villa battled back from 2-0 down to grab a draw. Since that clash in late November, Albion have sacked head coach Steve Clarke and brought in little-known Spaniard Pepe Mel who replaced Steve Clarke as head coach. The Spaniard oversaw a 1-1 draw with Everton in his first game in charge, while Villa also picked up a point against Merseyside opposition last time out, letting a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 with Liverpool. Both sides should feel fresh heading into this tie having had the weekend off due to their FA Cup third-round eliminations and, with the battle for top-flight survival proving so tight this season, they will be desperate to avoid being dragged closer to the relegation zone. Villa hold the advantage in the head-to-head record between these clubs, but recent history shows this to be one of the most hotly contested fixtures in the Premier League, with the last 15 meetings either ending all square or in a 2-1 victory. 0' LAMBERT'S WARNING TO ALBION
Villa boss Paul Lambert insists new Albion boss Pepe Mel will experience an intense atmosphere in his second match as a Premier League boss at Villa Park. "Regardless of who is in charge a derby game will take care of itself and the atmosphere will lift everybody," said the Scot. "It doesn't matter who is in the technical area. In a derby game anything can happen. It doesn't matter who is on form or who is not. I think I said that the last time we played them. We've got a lot of confidence at the minute from our draw at Liverpool the other week and that's evident. The atmosphere won't need lifting. It will be there anyway. We'll have the majority of the crowd on our side this time and they'll get right behind us, I've got no doubt about that."
0' EARLY ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is likely to miss the local derby as he struggles to overcome a foot injury. The forward hurt the sole of his foot when he ended up tumbling into the stands in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool in Villa's last Premier League game and has been unable to train. Loan signing Grant Holt may be asked to take Agbonlahor's place following his move from Wigan. Defender Nathan Baker is available following concussion.
0' BIG GAME FOR MEL
West Brom boss Pepe Mel has wasted no time in preparing for what he describes as "a big game", taking in Villa's 2-1 home loss to Arsenal - played four days after his January 9 appointment - and 2-2 draw at Liverpool that followed, as well as watching back their meeting earlier this season with the Baggies, which also finished 2-2. Asked how much he had seen of Villa and where he felt they could cause his team trouble, Mel said: "I watched their last two games, at Villa Park and Anfield. "They are a very good team on the counter-attack, but they are also good playing it long and winning the second ball with (striker) Christian Benteke. My players know this and we have worked hard on stopping these things. On my day off (on Sunday) I watched the last game, the 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns. It was a good match, but it is important for us to get three points this time."
0' EARLY WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Pepe Mel has said Anelka has a "99 per cent" chance of playing in the midlands derby. Forward Stephane Sessegnon, who is undergoing groin surgery and expected to be sidelined for a month, is the only player Mel has unavailable, with defenders Gareth McAuley and Goran Popov now ready to return to action after hamstring and neck problems respectively.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
