Sunderland vs. Southampton
Minute Commentary
90' FT: SUNDERLAND 2 SOUTHAMPTON 2
Sunderland battle back from two goals down to earn a priceless home point. Southampton looked on course to inflict an eighth home league defeat of the season on the Black Cats, who were simply awful for the first hour. The visitors were rewarded for their bright start when Jay Rodriguez volleyed them into a fourth-minute lead. Much had been expected from Sunderland after their thumping win at Fulham last weekend, but they conceded a second just after the half-hour, with Dejan Lovren volleying home from a corner. But Fabio Borini pulled one back almost immediately and last week's hero Adam Johnson smashed home an equaliser on 71 minutes, though Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc must shoulder some of the blame. Saints also lost centre-back Dejan Lovren and substitute Gaston Ramirez through injury, both players being carried off on a stretcher in the closing stages.
90' ONE FINAL CHANCE
Steven Fletcher wins Sunderland a last-minute corner after a mistake by Schniederlin. Johnson's delivery is headed away and Ki's ambitious shot is blocked before Alonso's tame header runs through to the goalkeeper.
90' CROWD WANT MORE
The crowd are urging their side on, clearly feeling they could complete a remarkable comeback. January was the last time Sunderland came from behind to actually win a match.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be seven minutes of added time following those two injuries.
88' SOUTHAMPTON SUBSTITUTION
Lovren also leaves the field on a stretcher and his place is taken by Maya Yoshida.
87' SOUTHAMPTON SUBSTITUTION
Ramirez is taken off the field on a stretcher and his place is taken by James Ward-Prowse.
86' BAD INJURY FOR RAMIREZ
Ramirez appears to have picked up a serious ankle injury after a tackle by Brown. His day is done.
85' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Ramirez and Lovren are both down in need of treatment.
82' BORUC SOLDIERS ON
It looks as though Boruc is going to play on despite that injury, because Kelvin Davis has put his tracksuit top back on.
81' AMAZING TURNAROUND
If you offered Southampton a draw now they would probably take it, which is incredible considering how dominant they were earlier in this match.
79' CHANGE NEEDED IN GOAL
Artur Boruc appears to have picked up another injury and Kelvin Davis is getting ready to replace him in the Southampton goal.
77' GARDNER GOES CLOSE
Gardner almost gives Sunderland the lead, forcing Boruc into an excellent save diving to his left. Fletcher then just fails to force the ball home from a scramble following the resulting corner.
74' SOUTHAMPTON SUBSTITUTION
Gaston Ramirez replaces Lallana for Southampton.
73' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland make their final change, with Steven Fletcher replacing Altidore, who has been very poor today.
72' GOAL DETAILS
It's a great strike from last week's hat-trick hero. He was left clear on the right and hit a fierce right-foot shot that found the top corner, but again Boruc was clearly at fault.
71' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 2 SOUTHAMPTON 2
Adam Johnson levels for Sunderland.
67' SAINTS MUST BE WARY
Those substitutions have changed the feel to this game. The crowd are pumped up now having seen their side belatedly threaten the Southampton goal in this second half.
65' GOAL DISALLOWED
Borini has the ball in the net, but the flag is up for offside. It's the right decision from the assistant referee.
64' UNHAPPY VIEWING
Today's attendance is 38,115 and at least 37,500 of those are far from happy with what they have seen in the first hour.
63' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION
Finally, here comes a double switch from Poyet. It's Gardner and Colback for Cattermole and Larsson.
62' INTO THE SIDE-NETTING
Lambert's low cross from the right is met by Rodriguez, whose shot is deflected by Bardsley into the side-netting.
61' MANNONE BUSY IN GOAL
Shaw is forward again from left-back and his long-range drive is again saved by Mannone although it was clearly heading wide.
59' MANNONE THERE AGAIN
Fonte is allowed a free header from a Davis right-wing free-kick, but it is too close to Mannone, who makes a routine save.
58' RODRIGUEZ IMPRESSES
Another giveaway by Wes Brown sets up a Southampton attack. Rodriguez nutmegs Cattermole and then collects a one-two before forcing Mannone into a fine diving save with an effort from the edge of the box.
56' GRADE A FOR EFFORT
Borini has been the one shining light for Sunderland today. He's found the net and you cannot fault his work-rate.
55' SHAW TRIES HIS LUCK
Chambers comes forward from right-back and his dipping shot is saved by Mannone, though replays show it would probably have drifted wide.
52' BARDSLEY GOES CLOSE
Bardsley shoots just wide from a free-kick, but it would not have counted because Mr Foy ruled the set-piece had been taken too quickly.
50' SHOT FROM DISTANCE
Shaw raids down the left and lets fly from distance with a strike that is on target but straight at Mannone.
49' CHANGE THEM ALL
Perhaps Premier League bosses should be allowed to do what managers can in their official fantasy football game. Play a wildcard once a season that permits you to change as many players as you want. Today would certainly be the day. Perhaps Gus thinks three changes would not be enough to make a difference.
48' CHANGES RESISTED
It's quite incredible that Gus Poyet has not made any personnel changes at the break. It doesn't say much about the quality on the Sunderland bench.
47' DAVIS SLICES WIDE
Saints are on the offensive again right from the kick-off but Davis slices a shot well wide of the target.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Southampton get the second half under way.
45' HT: SUNDERLAND 1 SOUTHAMPTON 2
Southampton lead at the break and they will be wondering how they are not two or three goals to the good because they have dominated that opening period. The visitors took the lead on four minutes through a sweet volley by Rodriguez and doubled their advantage just after the half-hour with another volley by Dejan Lovren from a corner. Just as some of the Sunderland fans were heading for the exit the home side got back into the game, some 88 seconds after conceding the second, Fabio Borini netting his fourth of the season.
45' GOOD SAVE FROM MANNONE
Saints win a free-kick 30 yards from goal after a foul on Davis. Lambert's well-hit effort is palmed away by Mannone, diving to his left.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
We are into the first of two minutes of added time at the end of the first half.
43' VOLLEY GOES WIDE
Lallana's initial effort is blocked by O'Shea before Rodriguez volleys wide. The visitors are still dominating here.
39' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Ki is booked for a nasty tackle on Cork. It was well deserved and, you might say, Cattermole-esque in its ferocity.
37' HOME NOT SO SWEET
Just how bad is Sunderland's home form? They have won three of their last 18 Premier League matches at the Stadium of Light, drawing six and losing nine. The 15 points collected over that time is just one more than bottom club Queens Park Rangers managed in 19 home games last season. The other two relegated clubs Wigan and Reading managed 18 and 20 respectively.
34' DETAILS ON THE GOALS
The Southampton goal came from a corner from the right by Davis. Lovren just escaped the attentions of Wes Brown and volleyed neatly into the corner with his right foot. Sunderland's reply was set up by a cross from the right by Johnson. His centre was taken down on the chest by Borini and the Italian swivelled before shooting into the corner. In my book Boruc could have done better keeping that one out.
32' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 SOUTHAMPTON 2
Fabio Borini pulls one back for Sunderland.
31' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 0 SOUTHAMPTON 2
There is the second goal for Saints - from Dejan Lovren.
30' CLOSE TO A SECOND
Wes Brown is robbed by Lambert deep inside his own half and the England striker sets up Rodriguez, who has a clear opportunity but shoots tamely at Mannone. That should have been a second for the visitors.
27' CONSIDERING A CHANGE
The Sunderland substitutes have started warming up already. If Jose Mourinho was their manager he would make a triple switch before we'd even played half an hour.
25' GOALS HARD TO COME BY
If Sunderland fail to score today it will be the first time since 2005 they have gone three successive home games in the Premier League without scoring.
22' INCHES AWAY
Lambert plays a wonderful one-two with Schneiderlin on the edge of the box and his angled volley rolls a whisker past the far post.
19' OFF THE POST
From the corner, O'Shea hauls Lovren to the ground and is lucky not to concede a penalty. Shaw's cross then deflects off Johnson and hits the outside of the post.
17' PENALTY CLAIMS
Saints break quickly again. Lambert's first-time pass puts Lallana away down the right and his cross looks for Rodriguez. The goalbound shot is charged down.
16' MUST DO BETTER
That's as bad an opening 15 minutes as I have seen from any Premier League side this season. Sunderland have to improve or they are going to get a hiding today.
14' AMBITIOUS ATTEMPT
Cork latches on to a poor clearance from Mannone and tries a 40-yard lob that doesn't clear the crossbar by much.
12' UNSETTLING WEEK
It was interesting to hear Mauricio Pochettino before kick-off talk about the events at St Mary's this week. “It has an effect, we're only human” and “there will be a consequence” are not the words you want to hear your manager (or, to be totally accurate, your manager's translator) say. It doesn't appear to have affected them in the early going, however.
10' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
A cynical trip by Cattermole on Rodriguez earns the Sunderland midfielder a yellow card.
7' DESERVED FRONT-RUNNERS
Southampton have deserved that, Sunderland have barely had a kick. Slight exaggeration, but had the Black Cats not taken the kick-off they might not have a touch of the ball in the opening five minutes!
5' GOAL DETAILS
A poor clearance from Alonso fell kindly to Rodriguez, who took it down calmly and sent a dipping volley into the corner. It was a wonderful strike giving Mannone no chance.
4' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 0 SOUTHAMPTON 1
Jay Rodriguez gives Southampton the lead.
2' FULL COURT PRESS
Want to see evidence of Saints' pressing game? Straight from the kick-off, two visiting attackers almost charged down a clearing kick from Artur Boruc. The Pole will have to have his wits about him today.
1' HERE WE GO
Sunderland kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Sunderland make two changes to the side that beat Fulham, with Sebastian Larsson and Jozy Altidore coming in for Jack Colback and Steven Fletcher, who both drop to the bench. Southampton make just the one change, Calum Chambers returning at the expense of Nathaniel Clyne.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Sunderland: Mannone, Bardsley, O'Shea, Brown, Alonso, Larsson, Cattermole, Ki, Johnson, Altidore, Borini. Subs: Gardner, Fletcher, Celustka, Pickford, Colback, Giaccherini, Roberge. Southampton: Boruc, Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Cork, Rodriguez, Steven Davis, Lallana, Lambert. Subs: Kelvin Davis, Clyne, Yoshida, Ramirez, Ward-Prowse, Do Prado, Hooiveld.
0' PREVIEW
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed this week he would be in charge for Saturday's trip to Sunderland in the Premier League and would stay on at St Mary's until at least the end of the season. There had been speculation that the Saints boss would follow through with his pledge to quit after the departure on Wednesday of his close friend, chairman Nicola Cortese. Saints are safely positioned in mid-table, so they can take time to ride out this mid-season crisis. The same cannot be said for Sunderland, though the Black Cats are optimistic they can fight their way out of the relegation zone, especially after their 4-1 hammering of Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend. “Our away fans have been fantastic and we have not lost away from home in five so they are delighted,” manager Gus Poyet told the club's official website. “But our home fans have suffered more in the league and I want to end that now.” Securing a second successive victory for the first time this season would haul Sunderland out of the bottom three for the first time since the opening month of the campaign. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Few would argue that Adam Johnson has always been blessed with natural ability, but the knock on the England winger is that he never produces it consistently enough. Maybe, just maybe, that is about to change after one of the best weeks of Johnson's career. It started with a man-of-the-match performance against Carlisle in the FA Cup, featured an excellent display off the bench against Manchester United in the Carling Cup and ended with a superb hat-trick against Fulham last weekend. Johnson has played for England 12 times, the last back in August 2012, and has featured only twice under current Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson. But with Theo Walcott ruled out with a long term injury, Johnson is well aware there is a place for another wide man in Hodgson's summer squad for the World Cup finals and a good run of form could secure him a place on the plane to Rio.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Southampton have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 21 wins to 16 by Sunderland and 12 games being drawn. On Wearside, Sunderland have 11 wins to five by Southampton, with a further six meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides on Aug. 28 finished in a 1-1 draw, Emanuele Giaccherini giving the Black Cats an early advantage they held until two minutes from time when Jose Fonte equalised. The corresponding match last season on May 12 also finished 1-1, Phil Bardsley giving Sunderland the lead midway through the second half but Jason Puncheon levelling eight minutes later. Bardsley was also on target in the Capital One Cup meeting at the Stadium of Light back in November which Sunderland won 2-1.
0' FORM GUIDE
Sunderland start the day in 19th place with 17 points from 21 games, above bottom club Crystal Palace on goal difference alone, but only one point from safety. Southampton are ninth with 30 points, seven clear of Hull in 10th. Sunderland have picked up fewer points at home (seven) than they have away and that paltry return is the lowest in the division. They won 4-1 at Fulham last time out, only their second win in the last ten outings. Southampton's 1-0 win over West Brom last weekend was also only their second win in the last ten. Only Everton have conceded fewer goals away from home than Mauricio Pochettino's men.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sunderland will be without goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, who has undergone shoulder surgery and defender Carlos Cuellar (hip). Striker Ji Dong-won has left for German side Augsburg. Victor Wanyama is again ruled out for Southampton with a calf injury and Dani Osvaldo is serving the final game of a three-match ban, but full-back Calum Chambers (illness) should be available.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Chris Foy, who has been on the select list of referees since 2001. This season the Merseyside official has shown 32 yellow cards in his 12 Premier League matches. His dismissal of Mikel Arteta in Arsenal's win at Crystal Palace in October was not only his first of this campaign, but only his second in the last 45 top-flight outings. His assistants today are Peter Kirkup and Andy Garratt, while Mike Jones is the fourth official.
