Newcastle United vs. Southampton
Minute Commentary
90' NEWCASTLE UNITED 1 SOUTHAMPTON 1
Newcastle were the better at forging chances in the first period, and the one they converted came on 27 minutes when Yoan Goufrann capitalised on dreadful Southampton defending from a free kick. Southampton shaded the second half in terms of commanding the play, coming close when Steven Davis hit the post on 63 minutes, two minutes before they levelled through Jay Rodriguez. It certainly looked close to being offside but the linesman gave Rodriguez the benefit of the doubt as he played a one-two with Davis before netting past Tim Krul. Remy should have made it 2-1 several minutes later but missed an absolute sitter. A final score-line of 1-1 is a fair reflection of how the game went.
90' IT'S ALL OVER
The spoils are shared at St James' Park. 1-1 is the final score.
90' PROBABLY LAST CHANCE
Massadio Haidara takes a shot that moves swings in the air before being saved by Paulo Gazzaniga. That'll likely be the last chance of the game.
90' BOOKING
Morgan Schneiderlin lunges in wildly on Massadio Haidara, who was of course a victim to that horrific Calum McManaman challenge last season. The Southampton man is booked but it all kicks off on the touchline, with Newcastle United coach Andy Woodman being sent to the stands.
90' INTO INJURY TIME
Numerous stoppages mean we will have six minutes of added time at the end of 90 minutes.
87' REF DOWN!
Hatem Ben Arfa has an effort saved, shortly before referee Mike Jones goes down clutching his face! He was caught by a flailing arm of Moussa Sissoko, accidentally of course.
84' IN POSSESSION
It's Southampton keeping possession and looking to commit more bodies forward in search of a winner. The crowd are getting very irritable with recent calls made by Mike Jones and his officials, and it has to be said he's not having his best game.
81' WRONG OPTION
Cheick Tiote ignores Mathieu Debuchy and other team-mates to selfishly have a crack himself from 25 yards - especially selfish considering his unimpressive goal-scoring records. The effort is always going wide.
79' BRIGHT START
Hatem Ben Arfa is busy two minutes into his substitute appearance, helping force two corners that Southampton manage to defend.
77' FINAL NEWCASTLE CHANGE
Davide Santon goes off feeling his thigh, as Massadio Haidara enters the fray.
72' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Hatem Ben Arfa comes on for Yoan Gouffran. Just the sort of player who can give Newcastle United the spark they need - they've looked devoid of ideas since the Southampton goal and have resorted to route one football.
72' SITTER
Another Paulo Gazzaniga error in this game presents Loic Remy with an open goal - but the Frenchman puts it wide, and by a distance! What a howler!
69' DEBUCHY SHOT
The hosts spark a flurry of activity in and around the Southampton area, ending with Mathieu Debuchy punting an effort goalwards that is saved by Paulo Gazzaniga.
66' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Newcastle United get caught on the break, and Jay Rodriguez surges forward and finds Steven Davis. He is borderline offside as he receives the ball back from his team-mate and shoots past Tim Krul to make it one goal apiece.
65' GOOOOOOOOOOAL!
Southampton top-scorer JAY RODRIGUEZ levels the scores!
64' BOOKING
Jack Cork is shown yellow for bringing down a speeding Moussa Sissoko.
63' OFF THE POST
Steven Davis hits the post with a left-footed volley from 20 yards! Tim Krul was beaten all ends up.
60' FIRST NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Papiss Cisse replaces Shola Ameobi who has been carrying an injury.
58' DOWNWARD HEADER
Shola Ameobi has a free header albeit from distance from a Vurnon Anita corner. He nods his aerial effort down and wide when he should hit the target.
55' REMY VOLLEY
Shola Ameobi tees up Loic Remy Loic Remy for a right-footed volley that would have had to have been spectacular to beat Paulo Gazzaniga. Remy hasn't scored in his last three for Newcastle - the striker's longest goal drought for the club since joining initially on loan in January.
52' SITTING BACK
Newcastle United are sitting noticeably deeper than they ever were in the first half and are inviting pressure from Southampton - strange to see so early in the second half with just a one-goal lead for the home side.
48' MORE URGENCY VISIBLE
No action to report so far but there's more urgency in Southampton's play early in the second period. Rickie Lambert is up front on his own now that Pablo Osvaldo has gone off.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Morgan Schneiderlin and Adam Lallana have replaced James Ward-Prowse and Pablo Osvaldo. Both players played under Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew when he was in charge of Southampton a few years ago.
45' NEWCASTLE UNITED 1 SOUTHAMPTON 0
Southampton looked to have the edge in quality early on, although they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the half, and a big one came Newcastle's way on 12 minutes when Loic Remy and Vurnon Anita failed to find the net in a golden double chance. Twenty-seven minutes in Yoan Gouffran scored his ninth goal in 29 starts for Newcastle when he took advantage of awful defending and goalkeeping from Jos Hooiveld and Paulo Gazzaniga. Boosted by the goal, the home side saw out the half in style, with Moussa Sissoko coming close to making it 2-0 ten minutes from the interval.
45' HALF TIME
Newcastle United are a goal to the good at the halfway stage.
44' NO FIREPOWER
Rickie Lambert and Pablo Osvaldo are offering nothing up front for Southampton which will concern Mauricio Pochettino. Jack Cork has possibly been the visitors' stand-out player in the holding role, pressing tirelessly and performing notable defensive duties.
41' SLEEPING REMY
Vurnon Anita does brilliantly to bring the ball forward into a threatening area, but it is unforgiveable from Loic Remy that he fails to attack the ball as Anita cuts it back - he could have easily have put his foot through that with more alertness and endeavour.
38' NEWCASTLE ON TOP
Newcastle United have been buoyed by the goal and are asking all the questions now. Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran are showing their creativity in midfield.
35' SUPER MOVE
Davide Santon smashes a free kick into the wall before a much better opportunity comes Newcastle's way. Their best move on the game sees them play three consecutive one-twos prior to Moussa Sissoko using his pace to slip in behind the Saints defence, forcing Paulo Gazzaniga into making a vital stop.
32' COULD HAVE BEEN YELLOW
Steven Davis is fortunate to avoid a booking for cynically bringing down Cheick Tiote as he tried to break clear.
29' FRENCH REVOLUTION
Newcastle United's last ten goals have all come from French players. Only one of their 21 goals this season has come from a player of another nationality - Wales defender Paul Dummett.
28' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Mathieu Debuchy hit a diagonal free kick that was headed on by Mike Williamson. Paulo Gazzaniga and Jos Hooiveld were all in a muddle as Yoan Gouffran stole in stuck the ball in the net to make it 1-0.
27' GOOOOOOOOOAL!
YOAN GOUFFRAN nets his sixth goal of the season!
24' STATE OF PLAY
Southampton are keeping the ball as well as we know they can here. Newcastle have probed a little more in the last few minutes, though, and the Saints centre-back partnership of Dejan Lovren and Jos Hooiveld does look suspect.
21' ATTEMPTED COUNTER
Newcastle United almost catch Southampton on the break here, looking to exploit what was a sizeable gap between Dejan Lovren and Jos Hooiveld. I'm surprised Jose Fonte is only on the bench today, as there were no reports of him carrying an injury.
17' SAINTS SHADING IT
Southampton are still shading it in quality here, bar that interruption that saw Loic Remy and Vurnon Anita miss the target. Some lovely one-touch football forced a corner, and Fabricio Coloccini had to stoop to head clear a teasing Calum Chambers cross moments ago.
12' DOUBLE CHANCE
Yoan Gouffran nicks the ball in a dangerous position and sets up Loic Remy who should score, but has an effort cleared off the line. Vurnon Anita then blazes over on the rebound to compound the home faithful's frustration.
10' BETTER FROM SAINTS
Southampton are coming into the game more now as Pablo Osvaldo has an effort blocked. Their five goals away from home are fewer than any other side in the top half of the league, however.
7' HEAD TO HEAD
Newcastle United have won nine and drawn one of their last ten home league and cup games against Southampton - a record stretching back over 16 years.
4' DEBUCHY VOLLEY
The first chance of the game is a volley flashed wide by Mathieu Debuchy.
3' EARLY MINUTES
Little to report in the opening minutes. A couple of crosses in from Mathieu Debuchy and Moussa Sissoko are tame, as are two early corner kicks from Newcastle.
1' AWAY WE GO
We're underway at St James' Park.

0' NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS

0' NEWCASTLE UNITED VS SOUTHAMPTON
St James' Park is the venue as Newcastle United host Southampton this afternoon. Separated by just one place and three points in the Premier League table, it'll be fascinating to see how one of the form teams of the moment fare up against the surprise package of the season so far. Join me, Robert Davies, here at 15:00 BST for a live text commentary, and team news beforehand.
0' IN FORM
Bar the 3-0 defeat at Swansea City ten days ago, Newcastle have been in impressive winning form that has seen them climb to seventh in the table, while banishing speculation over Alan Pardew's position for the time being at least. Chelsea and Tottenham were amongst the Magpies' victims as they got going in November, before bouncing back from that blip against Swansea with a win at Old Trafford against current champions Manchester United last weekend. Pardew won't even rule out pushing for a Champions League place, showing full well just how full of confidence his squad currently is.
0' NO NEED TO WORRY
Three defeats and a draw following such an impressive run of form might seem hugely disappointing to some teams, but the circumstances involved in Southampton's recent dry spell means no one's view of them as the force we were raving about weeks ago has noticeably diminished. The 2-0 score-line in the Saints' defeat at Arsenal was not a fair reflection of how they bossed the game against the league leaders in large spells, while at the fortress that is Stamford Bridge the following week, Southampton led at half time before eventually succumbing to defeat. The 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa was indeed a surprise, however most teams would have taken the hard-earned 1-1 draw that came next against Manchester City. We're all looking forward to seeing their exciting array of young English talent on display this afternoon.
0' INJURIES AND SUSPENSIONS
Yohan Cabaye serves a one-match ban for Newcastle after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season last time out. Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin could miss out with a pelvic problem, joining Victor Wanyama, Artur Boruc, Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Fox and Kelvin Davis on the injury list.
0' THE REF
Experienced official Mike Jones will preside over this fixture – his eighth fixture in this top flight campaign that has already seen him show 15 yellow cards and send one player off.
