Manchester City vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 6 ARSENAL 3
City close to within three points of leaders Arsenal after a thoroughly convincing victory at the Etihad Stadium which suggests it will be they, not the Gunners, who will be lifting the Premier League trophy come next May. City were imperious going forward and no side would have been capable of living with their attacking threat. Sergio Aguero volleyed them into an early lead from a corner and they could have been two or three up before Theo Walcott's mis-hit strike totally deceived Costel Pantilimon to haul the Gunners level. Goals five minutes either side of half-time from Alvaro Negredo and Fernandinho looked to have put the game beyond the visitors. But Walcott's sweetly-struck curler on 63 minutes gave them brief hope before David Silva's slick finish three minutes later restored the home side's two-goal cushion. Fernandinho added a fifth two minutes from time, Per Mertesacker netted in injury time for Arsenal and City still had to have the final say, Yaya Toure scoring from the penalty spot. The only bad news for City was losing Aguero to what appeared like a calf injury which may sideline him for a couple of weeks. Arsenal central defender Laurent Koscielny was carried off on a stretcher after lengthy treatment and his knee injury looks much more serious.
90' GOAL: MAN CITY 6 ARSENAL 3
Toure steps up and scores from the spot.
90' CITY PENALTY
Szczesny trips Milner and City have a penalty. The Arsenal goalkeeper is cautioned.
90' GOAL: MAN CITY 5 ARSENAL 3
Arsenal have one back through Mertesacker, who heads home from Sagna's cross.
90' WALCOTT DENIED A THIRD
Walcott is denied a hat-trick by Pantilimon, who dives to his left to turn aside a free-kick curled round the wall.
90' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Nasri goes off to a terrific reception, with Javi Garcia taking his place.
89' GOAL DETAILS
City are rampant. Wilshere loses the ball in midfield and Nasri slides a pass through to the Brazilian, who lifts his shot over Szczesny and into the corner. Bendtner has the ball in the net at the other end, but the flag is up for offside.
88' GOAL: MAN CITY 5 ARSENAL 2
Fernandinho nets a fifth for City.
84' THE LOOK OF CHAMPIONS
Nasri tries to weave his way through the entire Arsenal defence, but Mertesacker does his job well and blocks the shot at goal. Szczesny then saves a scorcher from Fernandinho.
81' CITY BOOKING
A bodycheck from Kompany on Vermaelen earns the City skipper the yellow card.
80' PUSHING FOR A FIFTH
Szczesny comes for a corner and gets taken out by Fernandinho, but Toure heads over an unguarded net.
78' TOURE MISSES THE TARGET
City break at pace again and Toure's low angled drive is dragged wide of the left-hand post.
76' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Nicklas Bendtner replaces Giroud for Arsenal.
75' INCHES AWAY
Navas almost finishes off a slick City counter attack, rounding the goalkeeper but shooting into the side-netting.
72' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal take off Flamini and throw on Serge Gnabry.
72' CITY SUBSTITUTION
James Milner comes on for City, replacing Silva.
70' WONDERFUL PANTILIMON SAVE
Wilshere's thunderbolt 30-yarder is arrowing for the roof of the net, but Pantilimon acrobatically tips over.
68' GIROUD GOAL RULED OUT
Giroud has the ball in the back of the City net, but the flag had long gone up - incorrectly as it happens - for offside.
67' GOAL DETAILS
This is just a wonderful game, full of incredible goals. This time, Jesus Navas teased Monreal on the right before playing a low ball into the centre. Silva was quicker of thought than Mertesacker, getting to the pass first and steering it deftly into the roof of the net before Szczesny barely had time to blink.
66' GOAL: MAN CITY 4 ARSENAL 2
David Silva scores for City. It's another brilliant goal.
64' GOAL DETAILS
What a breathtaking goal from the Gunners. Ozil found Ramsey, who in turn found Walcott and he looked up before curling a wonderful shot from the left of the area into the opposite top corner.
63' GOAL: MAN CITY 3 ARSENAL 2
Theo Walcott scores a blinding second for Arsenal.
60' STRONG PENALTY CLAIMS
Arsenal are desperate for a penalty here. Wilshere's ball was cut out by Zabaleta, but it bounced up and hit his arm, preventing it going through to Walcott. Mr Atkinson dismisses vehement protests from the visitors.
57' NOW GIROUD HEADS WIDE
Arsenal are really threatening here. Sagna crosses from the right and Giroud heads wide from an unmarked position in the centre. Arsene Wenger might be wondering why he ever sold Marouane Chamakh. And then again, he might not.
55' MISKICK FROM GIROUD
Dear, oh dear. Wilshere finds Giroud in acres of space. The Frenchman has only to pick out the unmarked Walcott at the back post, but his woeful miskick slices out of play.
54' TOO HIGH FROM GIROUD
Wilshere floats a wonderful pass over the City defence for Giroud, who volleys over at full stretch. Arsenal have not given up yet.
52' GOAL DETAILS
Arsenal tried to play themselves out of trouble, but the ball from Ozil eluded Flamini and Fernandinho was on to it in a flash, curling a shot into the corner from outside the box. That's a killer blow for the visitors.
51' GOAL: MAN CITY 3 ARSENAL 1
Fernandinho scores his first goal for City.
50' CITY SUBSTITUTION
City make their switch, Navas is on for the injured Aguero.
50' CITY BOOKING
David Silva, the Spaniard who has taken over Paul Scholes' mantle as the worst tackler in the Premier League, chops down Ramsey and receives his fourth caution of the season.
49' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
Aguero limps off down the tunnel. Jesus Navas is warming up on the touchline.
48' AGUERO GOES OFF
Aguero is down again and looks to have pulled up with a muscular injury. It looks like a calf strain and his day appears to be done.
46' ARSENAL NEED ANSWERS
One of Arsenal's shortcomings in the first half has been their inability to cope with Zabelata overlapping down the right. It's not exactly all Wilshere's fault, although he's not done a great job tracking the runs, but Wenger needs to do something because City look capable of scoring almost every time they attack.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
City get the second half under way.
45' HT: MAN CITY 2 ARSENAL 1
City have dominated the first half and take a deserved lead into the break. They went in front on 14 minutes through a well-worked corner, with Sergio Aguero volleying home his 13th Premier League goal of the season. Arsenal were under real pressure and could easily have gone further behind, but they levelled with a freak goal on 31 minutes from Theo Walcott after a bad defensive lapse by Yaya Toure. City's attacking play, though, has been a joy to behold and they have carved open the league leaders at will. Alvaro Negredo shot wide before restoring the home side's lead six minutes before the break, steering home Zabalaeta's cross. Even worse news for Arsenal is they have lost defender Laurent Koscielny to what appears to be a serious injury.
45' SILVA SHOOTS OVER
A cross from the left by Negredo causes all sorts of problems for Szczesny, who palms the ball back in to play rather than out for a corner. Arsenal escape, though, and moments later Silva shoots well over.
45' HEADER JUST OVER
There will be four minutes of added time. Demichelis heads powerfully over from another right-wing corner.
42' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Koscielny is carried off on a stretcher and Thomas Vermaelen comes on in his place.
41' KOSCIELNY HURT
It's another quality goal from the home side. Toure's wonderful pass put Zabaleta in on the overlap down the right, he crossed low and Negredo netted from close range.
40' GOAL DETAILS
It's another quality goal from the home side. Toure's wonderful pass put Zabaleta in on the overlap down the right, he crossed low and Negredo netted from close range.
39' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 ARSENAL 1
Alvaro Negredo restores City's advantage.
37' JOE CAN TAKE HEART
Looking at the display from Pantilimon in the first 35 minutes, it is a good bet that Joe Hart will be back in goal for City's next Premier League match.
35' BAD MISS FROM NEGREDO
Negredo is in behind the Arsenal defence to collect a pass from Silva, but hooks his shot wide of the left-hand post.
32' GOAL DETAILS
It's a disaster for City. The dozing Toure was robbed in midfield by Ramsey, who fed Walcott. It looked initially that the shot had taken a deflection, but looking at the replay it might have been hit so poorly that it totally deceived the flat-footed Pantilimon.
31' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 ARSENAL 1
Theo Walcott levels for Arsenal.
30' POOR FROM PANTILIMON
Pantilimon makes a right mess of trying to punch clear the resulting free-kick, but Ozil fails to control the loose ball.
30' FORWARD'S CHALLENGE
Negredo hacks down Monreal just outside his own penalty area and is a little lucky to escape the game's first yellow card.
28' TOURE FIRES OVER
City are playing some sumptuous football here. Negredo and Toure combine to set up Silva, whose first shot is charged down. Toure puts the follow-up into the stands.
25' NASRI SHOOTS WIDE
Nasri fancies a goal against his former club, but drags a shot wide of the left-hand upright.
24' POOR MARKING FROM KOSCIELNY
If you're a City fan, you're saying that opening goal was pure class from your number 16. If you're an Arsenal supporter, you have your head in your hands. Koscielny was mesmerised - following the path of the ball - allowing the man he was supposed to be marking sneak behind him. The first time he realised he had lost Aguero was a split-second before the ball started heading for the Arsenal net.
22' CHANCE FOR A SECOND
Kompany does well to pick out Negredo in the inside-right channel, but the Spaniard slides a shot wide of the near post when he really should have done better.
20' AGUERO GOES DOWN
Aguero goes down holding his head after a collision with Koscielny. The Arsenal defender did nothing wrong there, Aguero backed into him.
17' UNSTEADY HANDLING
A scare there for City, as Pantilimon drops a high ball. Luckily for him, Giroud behind him was looking the other way.
15' GOAL DETAILS
It's a fantastic set-piece goal for the home side. Nasri delivered from the right, Demichelis stole in to flick on a header and Aguero volleyed home magnificently from beyond the back post.
14' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 ARSENAL 0
Sergio Aguero gives City the lead.
12' BAD MISS BY WILSHERE
Arsenal have a great chance to take the lead. Walcott crosses from the right, but the unmarked Wilshere miskicks and Giroud then fails to get good connection on a header after Walcott had played the ball in again.
11' CITY MUST BEWARE WALCOTT
Walcott makes another diagonal run off the right wing to try and latch on to a pass from the back. It's a definite ploy that Arsenal have been working on during training this week.
10' CLICHY HEADS CLEAR
Arsenal finally get over the halfway line. Ramsey's deft chip almost picks out Walcott stealing in, but former Gunner Clichy makes an important clearing header.
8' AGUERO CAUGHT FLAT-FOOTED
Negredo does well down the left and whips in a dangerous cross. It takes an awkward bounce in front of Aguero, who is taken by surprise. On another day that could easily have been nestling in the back of the Arsenal net.
6' WELL ON TOP
City have started very impressively here. Arsenal's defence have looked a little nervy making their clearances, but importantly have not given up a clear shooting opportunity.
4' THE CORNER THAT WASN'T
City are lucky to be given a corner, which clearly ricocheted last off Toure. Fortunately, it comes to nothing, or Arsene Wenger would have been fuming in the ear of the fourth official.
2' WILL GUNNERS BE JADED?
It's tough on Arsenal having to play Saturday lunchtime after Wednesday's Champions League exertions. Advantage City, there, thanks to the television scheduling.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

That means again there is no place in the starting line-up for goalkeeper Joe Hart. Arsenal make four changes from the side that drew at Everton. In come Bacary Sagna, Nacho Monreal, Mathieu Flamini and Theo Walcott. Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla drop to the bench and there is no place in the 18 for Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson.
0' PREVIEW
Manchester City welcome Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium in Saturday's early kick-off, in what is likely to be one of the most important games of the season and potentially one of the most enthralling. It's true these sides are only first and fourth, but this features the bookmaker's two favourites for the 2013-14 title. City boast the strongest squad in the Premier League, highlighted by the fact they left out some of their big guns in midweek and still came away with a 3-2 win at the home of last season's Champions League winners Bayern Munich. Arsenal missed out on the chance to extend their lead to the top to seven points when they conceded a late equaliser to Everton on Sunday and their morale will have taken a bit of a knock with the defeat in Europe to Napoli on Wednesday night. But here is an opportunity to open up a nine-point gap on City and instil real belief into a squad unaccustomed to challenging for the title. Not many sides return from the Etihad with anything other than being taught a footballing lesson and being given a sound beating, so how Arsenal will respond today will tell us a great deal about whether they are pretenders or contenders. The strength of both these teams is going forward and neither likes to take a step back, so if both play without the fear of failure this has all the hallmarks of being a goal-filled thriller. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Who would have thought at the start of the season that Aaron Ramsey would be outperforming Mezut Ozil in the Arsenal midfield. The young Welshman has been sensational, with eight goals and five assists to his name. That's not to say Ozil has been anything other than good value for the huge fee Arsenal paid Real Madrid for his services. The Germany midfielder's goal against Everton last week took his tally to four Premier League goals for the season to add to his seven assists. You feel, though, that Ozil was bought specifically for matches like this and that he is a player who revels in the big occasion. City are laden with stars and striker Sergio Aguero has 17 goals in his last 15 matches in all competitions. The Argentina forward was one of several big names rested for the trip to Munich in midweek, along with the equally influential Yaya Toure, whose drive from midfield and ability from set-pieces could prove crucial in this match.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 85 wins to 40 by City and 40 games being drawn. In Manchester, Arsenal have 33 wins to 31 by City, with a further 19 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Sep. 23 finished in a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming from defenders, Joleon Lescott giving City a 40th-minute lead and Arsenal levelling eight minutes from time through Laurent Koscielny. City won the return at the Emirates on Jan. 13 2-0 with strikes from James Milner (21 mins) and Edin Dzeko (32), both goals coming with Arsenal reduced to ten men following the ninth-minute dismissal of Koscielny. City also had a man sent off late on, captain Vincent Kompany being red-carded 15 minutes from time. Incidentally, that City victory last season was their first at Arsenal in the Premier League era, ending a winless run that stretched back to 1975 featuring eight draws and 19 defeats. It took City until 2006 to even record their first home Premier League win over the Gunners, but they have done better in recent years, winning four of the last seven overall.
0' FORM GUIDE
Arsenal start the day top of the league, with 35 points from 15 games, five points clear of Liverpool and Chelsea and six in front of fourth-placed City. City have a perfect record at home in the Premier League this season, winning seven out of seven, netting 29 goals and conceding just two. Arsenal have the division's best away record, with 16 points from seven matches and the best defensive record on the road, conceding just five goals.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
City will again be without Matija Nastasic (calf) and Micah Richards is very doubtful after going off against Bayern Munich with a hamstring injury. Better news, though, is that Gael Clichy is available after recovering from a minor knock. Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna will have a late fitness test on a hamstring injury. Lukas Podolski has recovered from his hamstring problem, but needs to regain full fitness and will not be considered. Definitely missing for the visitors are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Abou Diaby (both knee) and Yaya Sanogo (back).
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Martin Atkinson, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2005 and who became a FIFA referee a year later. The West Yorkshire-based official had a reputation as being one of the Premier League's strictest referees, showing nine red cards in 27 games in 2011-12. But last season he dismissed just the one player, Newcastle's Cheick Tiote at the Stadium of Light in the Wear-Tyne derby. That was all the way back in October, with Atkinson now having gone 43 games in all competitions without producing a red card. His assistants today are Stuart Burt and Harry Lennard, while Bobby Madley is the fourth official.
