Everton vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FT: EVERTON 3 LIVERPOOL 3
Liverpool snatch a draw from the 221st Merseyside derby thanks to Daniel Sturridge's flicked header a minute from time. Until the substitute's strike it had looked as through two Romelu Lukaku goals in the last 18 minutes had earned Everton victory. Liverpool had led 2-1 at the break, Luis Suarez putting them back in front after Kevin Mirallas had cancelled out Philippe Coutinho's opener. It was a magnificent match which arguably neither side deserved to lose. Premier League football at its absolute best.
90' HONOURS EVEN
McCarthy is denied a last-gasp winner as his shot is blocked. That's the final whistle.
90' GOOD STOP BY HOWARD
Suarez smashes a shot towards the near post, but Howard palms it away. Sturridge has the ball in the net but he was offside. No goal.
90' MOSES HEADS OVER
Liverpool almost grab a fourth, Moses heading over from close range with Suarez delivering an expert cross from the left.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be four minutes of added time. Can we find a winner?
90' EVERTON BOOKING
Distin was booked for the foul that led to the free-kick from which Liverpool equalised.
89' GOAL: EVERTON 3 LIVERPOOL 3
Daniel Sturridge levels for Liverpool with a flicked header from a Gerrard free-kick from the right. It's another quality goal.
88' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Everton make their last change, with the excellent Mirallas being replaced by Leon Osman.
84' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Everton make a change, with young John Stones replacing Pienaar.
83' GOAL DETAILS
Another four-on-two Everton break saw Mirallas find Deulofeu, who was denied by Mignolet's left foot. But from the corner Lukaku beat his man to head home powerfully.
82' GOAL: EVERTON 3 LIVERPOOL 2
Romelu Lukaku heads Everton in front!
81' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Brendan Rodgers makes a change in his search for victory as Daniel Sturridge replaces Lucas.
80' SUAREZ DENIED
Back come Liverpool. Gerrard crosses for Suarez, whose header from beyond the back post is somehow kept out by Howard. Suarez is then booked for an earlier foul.
79' GROANS ALL ROUND
Everton have a four-on-two break, but Lukaku passes to a Liverpool defender. That's why Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho allowed him to go out on loan.
78' ALERT DEFENDING
Johnson almost carves out a chance for Liverpool, but after beating his man Jagielka is there to cut out the cross.
75' GERRARD SHOOTS WIDE
Liverpool try to mount a response but Gerrard scuffs his shot wide.
73' GOAL DETAILS
It's no more than the home side have deserved. Lukaku's deflected free-kick was kept out by a magnificent save from Mignolet. But Mirallas went and retrieved the ball and pulled it back to around the penalty spot from where the on-loan striker found the net.
72' GOAL: EVERTON 2 LIVERPOOL 2
Romelu Lukaku levels for Everton!
71' LUKAKU DENIED AGAIN
Barkley has been even more dangerous from his deep-lying position since Baines went off. Another wonderful ball picks out Lukaku, who shoots straight at Mignolet.
69' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Liverpool make a change, with Allen making way for Victor Moses.
68' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Lucas is booked by Mr Dowd for a foul on Pienaar, though more likely for the string of offences that preceded it.
65' MIGNOLET SAVES WELL AGAIN
Lukaku collects a pass from Mirallas down the inside-left channel but is denied by an excellent reaction save from Mignolet.
63' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Joe Allen's nightmare five minutes is complete with a booking for a foul on Mirallas. Everton's Belgian was lucky not to escape a second yellow moments before. McCarthy then slices well wide.
60' MISS OF THE SEASON
Dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Suarez skips through the Everton defence and squares it to Allen who simply must score. With the goal gaping, the former Swansea man side-foots wide. It's not quite Ronnie Rosenthal's miss at Villa Park, but it's pretty dreadful from a professional footballer. Suarez could have scored that with his eyes closed and both feet tied together.
59' JOHNSON IN THE RIGHT PLACE
Coleman stands up a wonderful cross to the back post, but luckily for Liverpool Johnson is there to clear the danger, because Mignolet had been caught completely flat-footed by the delivery.
58' LOOKING FOR A THIRD
Liverpool are hunting for a third goal here. Two or three times in the last few minutes a better final pass would have led to a clear shooting opportunity.
55' WHAT A CHANCE
Everton should be level. A pitiful back-heel from Johnson leads to an Everton break. One pass from Barkley puts Deulofeu clean through, but his shot is too close to Mignolet, who saves with his legs.
52' HOW THEY LINE UP
Gareth Barry has dropped into left-back for the home side. Barkley is playing deeper with Mirallas playing just behind Lukaku in attack.
51' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Here is that Everton change, it's Gerard Deulofeu for Baines.
50' RISKY CHALLENGE
Mirallas lands awkwardly on top of Suarez. He could have collected a second yellow card, but that would have been harsh and Mr Dowd has made the right call.
48' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
Leighton Baines has been struggling with injury and the signs are that Everton are set to make a change.
47' SUAREZ STILL LIMPING
Suarez has emerged for the second half, though he is still limping. The limp disappears, mind you, when there is a ball that needs to be chased.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Liverpool get the second half under way.
45' HT: EVERTON 1 LIVERPOOL 2
Liverpool lead at half-time in what has been an exhilarating 221st Merseyside derby. A breathless start saw both sides find the net in the first eight minutes. Philippe Coutinho gave the visitors the lead when he escaped his marker to shoot home from a Steven Gerrard corner. But that lead lasted only three minutes, as Kevin Mirallas levelled after Liverpool had failed to deal with a free-kick from Leighton Baines. The third goal on 19 minutes also came from a set-piece. Suarez was fouled by Barry and made the home side pay by curling a low shot round the Everton wall for his ninth of the season.
45' BAINES SHOOTS WIDE
Baines plays a good one-two with Pienaar down the left, but slices his intended shot which goes well wide of the target.
45' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We're into three minutes of added time. No question Liverpool have been the better side in this first half despite Everton's bright start.
44' CLASH IN MIDFIELD
Gerrard clatters Barry in an aerial challenge that leaves both men on the floor. Distin wants a card for the foul by the Liverpool captain, but that was innocuous enough. A foul and nothing more is the right call.
42' BAINES STRUGGLING
Everton's Leighton Baines is also struggling with a muscular injury, which will probably be assessed at half-time. It doesn't look enough to force his early exit from the match.
40' MAKING HISTORY
USA goalkeeper Tim Howard is starting his 272nd Premier League game for Everton today, breaking the club record set by David Unsworth. He would have been hoping to keep a clean sheet rather than pick the ball out of his net twice in the first 45 minutes.
38' POOR FROM THE REFEREE
That was dreadful refereeing from Mr Dowd, who took a full three minutes before pulling a card out of his pocket. It was almost as if he was waiting for one of his chums to watch the replay on the television and tell him how bad the tackle actually was because he couldn't make up his own mind.
36' EVERTON BOOKING
Kevin Mirallas is booked for a high tackle on Suarez, which was reckless and could quite easily have been red. The Liverpool physio said something which appears to have annoyed Gareth Barry. He will be in trouble for that.
33' SUAREZ STRUGGLING
Suarez has picked up an injury to his right knee or thigh and is not moving too comfortably. Daniel Sturridge is warming up on the sidelines just in case.
32' EVERTON BOOKING
Ross Barkley is booked for diving. It's his fourth caution of the season and he is one yellow card away from a suspension.
29' WELL OVER FROM BARKLEY
Barkley has looked lively in the early going, but his ambitious 25-yarder is always rising and clears the bar by some distance.
27' A WHISKER AWAY
Mirallas beats Flanagan with ease and his rasping 25-yard angled drive is not far away from the far post.
25' HISTORY AGAINST THEM
Everton's only win in the last 13 Merseyside derbies in the Premier League was a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park in October 2010, which was Liverpool's first game under new owner John W. Henry.
23' SO CLOSE TO AN EQUALISER
Barkley almost levels for Everton. He whips in what was an intended cross for Lukaku, who fails to get any contact, and at the last minute Mignolet has to dive to his left to make a super stop because that was heading just inside the post.
20' GOAL DETAILS
Suarez restores Liverpool's lead from a 25-yard free-kick, awarded after he had been fouled by Barry. There was a hole between Steven Pienaar and the end of the wall, which the Uruguayan exploited with a magnificent low strike, curled expertly inside the post.
19' GOAL: EVERTON 1 LIVERPOOL 2
Luis Suarez gives Liverpool the lead again.
18' LUCAS HELPS OUT
Barkley shows some silky skills to get the better of Flanagan down the right, but Lucas is across to offer some much-needed cover and block the attempted cross. That's excellent play from the Liverpool midfielder.
16' STRIKING EARLY
Including the one today, no fewer than 17 of Liverpool's 22 league goals in 2013-14 have come in the first half, more than any other club in the Premier League.
13' GREAT CHANCE SPURNED
A ball from Pienaar looks to have put Lukaku clean through. Mignolet dives at the feet of the Everton striker, who stumbles trying to round his man and the chance is gone.
12' NERVY IN DEFENCE
Liverpool's defence looks very shaky from set-pieces, as a corner from Baines causes more consternation in their ranks. That could easily have been another tap-in had the ball bounced more kindly.
10' GOAL DETAILS
It's another goal from a set-piece. Baines delivered from the right, Skrtel's unconvincing clearance fell at the feet of Mirallas and he made no mistake from close range.
9' GOAL: EVERTON 1 LIVERPOOL 1
Kevin Mirallas levels for Everton. What a start!
8' OMINOUS SIGNS
Bad news for Everton. On all seven occasions when Liverpool have taken the lead this season they have gone on to win the match.
6' GOAL DETAILS
It came from a set-piece. A great crossfield ball from Gerrard earned Liverpool their first corner on the left. Gerrard delivered, Suarez flicked on and Coutinho escaped his marker to loop round the back and shot into the net past a man on the line.
5' GOAL: EVERTON 0 LIVERPOOL 1
Philippe Coutinho gives Liverpool the lead!
4' EVERTON ON THE FRONT FOOT
Everton break impressively through McCarthy, but Lukaku's ball in from the right is poor and Liverpool clear.
3' PRESSURE ON THE YOUNGSTER
Liverpool left-back Jon Flanagan will have his hands full today with the tricky Kevin Mirallas. That's certainly an area where this game could be won and lost.
2' GIVE US A GOAL
Everton are looking to avoid playing out a third consecutive goalless draw in the league for the first time in more than 21 years.
1' HERE WE GO
Everton kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Daniel Sturridge is carrying a minor knock and only makes the bench for Liverpool, with Philippe Coutinho taking his place. Jon Flanagan replaces Aly Cissokho in defence. Everton make one change from the side that drew at Crystal Palace, Ross Barkley coming in for Leon Osman, who is on the bench.

0' PREVIEW
The fur always flies in the Merseyside derby and there is no reason to suspect that the 221st meeting between Everton and Liverpool and the 189th in the league will be any different from many of the clashes that preceded it. This fixture has produced the most red cards in Premier League history (20) - although Jack Rodwell's dismissal in 2011 was later overturned. Everton paid for that incorrect decision in more ways than one (see Players to Watch, below). But that injustice aside, one of the keys to success for the Toffees will be their ability to keep 11 men on the field. Everton have had eight red cards in the last 12 Goodison derbies, compared to Liverpool's one, with the visitors going on to win seven of those matches. It doesn't need rocket science to know that 11 players are better than 10, but it is incredibly difficult not to get caught up in the heat of the occasion. The home side could also do with a return to form of on-loan striker Romelu Lukaku, who has been misfiring in recent weeks. The other point of interest is the two managers. Both 40 years old. Both former Swansea bosses. Both encourage their teams to pass the ball. Will either sacrifice their pleasing styles of play in search of victory today? Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Luis Suarez has eight goals in seven games for his club this season and has been unstoppable since returning from the ban that kept him out of the early part of the campaign. He played 90 minutes in Uruguay's World Cup play-off against Jordan on Wednesday, but at least he arrived back on Merseyside sooner than might have been expected having been given the use of Liverpool owner John W. Henry's private jet. Suarez has more than a little history in this fixture, his theatrics having helped convince referee Martin Atkinson that Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell should be sent off in 2011. The following season the Uruguayan was accused of being a diver by then Everton manager David Moyes in the build-up to the match. Suarez ignored the criticism (let's face it, he has had worse), and he exacted sweet revenge on the Toffees boss by creating the first goal and celebrating by running fully 50 yards and doing a swallow dive in front of Moyes. At the time the Scot had a face like thunder, though he later said he loved the celebration.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 72 wins to 57 by Everton and 59 games being drawn. At Goodison Park, Everton have 34 wins to 32 by Liverpool, with a further 28 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Oct. 28 ended in a 2-2 draw. A Leighton Baines own goal on 14 minutes and a Luis Suarez strike six minutes later seemed to have put Liverpool in control. But the Toffees were level before the break thanks to Leon Osman's strike on 22 minutes after Brad Jones had failed to collect a right-wing corner and a leveller from Steven Naismith (35). The return match at Anfield on May 5 also finished level, neither side being able to find the net in a match of few chances. Perhaps what was most remarkable about the two meetings last season was that it was the first time in six years that neither game produced a red card.
0' FORM GUIDE
Everton start the day in sixth place with 20 points from 11 games, just three points behind their second-placed Merseyside rivals. The Toffees would need a win by four goals or more to overhaul Liverpool. Everton have lost just once this season, a 3-1 reverse at Manchester City. They are unbeaten in four since and have kept clean sheets in their last three matches, the last two of which - with Spurs and Crystal Palace - have ended in goalless draws. Liverpool hammered Fulham 4-0 last time out, partly erasing the memory of a tepid display at Arsenal the week before which saw them lose 2-0 in the top-of-the-table clash. These sides have among the best defences in the top flight. Both have conceded ten goals, with only Southampton and Tottenham boasting better defensive records.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Everton have defenders Antolin Alcaraz (hernia) and Tony Hibbert (calf) available again, though both are likely to be on the bench. Arouna Kone (knee) and Darron Gibson (knee) are again ruled out. Liverpool defender Jose Enrique is likely to be sidelined for some time after the club confirmed this week that he needs hip surgery. Daniel Sturridge (dead leg) and Steven Gerrard (hip) are both carrying minor knocks, but should start.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Phil Dowd, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The man from Stoke-on-Trent has shown 29 yellow cards in eight top-flight games, but has yet to dismiss anyone this season or even to award a penalty. Dowd sent off four players in 2012-13, including Liverpool's Daniel Agger in the opening day defeat at West Brom. His assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann, while Howard Webb is the fourth official.
