Southampton vs. Hull City Tigers
Minute Commentary
90' DOMINATION
Southampton have won this game at a canter, but for long periods of the second half it looked like Hull might find a way back into it. First half goals from Morgan Schneiderlin and Adam Lallana sandwiched a Rickie Lambert penalty, and the hosts went in at the interval in charge. However, a poor piece of play early in the second half from Victor Wanyama allowed Jake Livermore to set up Yannick Sagbo to score, and it looked as if the game may have become a contest once again. However, Southampton held firm, and a late goal from substitute Steven Davis confirmed three points, as well as Southampton's best ever start to a Premier League season. Southampton 4 - 1 Hull.
90' FULL TIME
Phil Dowd blows his whistle, and Southampton have their best ever start to a Premier League season.
90' OVER THE BAR
Jay Rodriguez has to mark this one down as a wasted chance. Steven Davis threads a ball through to him and the striker surges into the box, before blazing over. The diving Curtis Davies put him off, I think.
90' ADDED TIME
Four minutes are added on.
88' LOVELY TEAM GOAL
That's it. Nathaniel Clyne exchanges passes with Jay Rodriguez before curling a low cross into the box. Steven Davis is in acres of space and has time to control the ball, before lasing an effort into the bottom corner. Southampton 4 - 1 Hull.
88' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
SOUTHAMPTON HAVE WRAPPED IT UP!!!
87' WELL PLAYED
Despite the scoreline, Hull have played some good football this afternoon and do not look as if they will be in relegation trouble come the end of the season. That's a big claim from this commentator!
84' NICE TRY
Jake Livermore lashes at a shot from 30 yards, and Artur Boruc watches it sail into the stand.
83' FINAL SOUTHAMPTON CHANGE
Adam Lallana leaves the field to a standing ovation, with Jack Cork taking his place for the final few minutes.
82' LATE
Adam Lallana's flick sells Pablo Osvaldo short, and the striker dives in on Curtis Davies, who appears to be in a bit of pain.
80' FINAL HULL CHANGE
George Boyd leaves the field, with Stephen Quinn taking his place.
79' CLOSE ONCE AGAIN
Pablo Osvaldo is the next man to have a headed chance. Nathaniel Clyne swings in a cross from deep on the right and Pablo Osvaldo powers a header at goal, which Steve Harper holds.
77' CLOSE!
Adam Lallana makes enough space to send over a cross from the left, but Jay Rodriguez has to stretch a little too far and his header sails over the top. No worries there for Steve Harper.
77' SOUTHAMPTON CHANGE
Pablo Osvaldo comes on for the highly impressive Rickie Lambert.
75' DIVE - OR NOT?
Yannick Sagbo goes down under pressure from two Southampton defenders. He appeals for the free kick, but the assistant referee says no.
73' HULL CHANGE
Danny Graham replaces David Meyler.
72' FIGHTING BACK
Hull are looking more confident in this half, but as time goes on you worry that they might have already had their best chances. Southampton do not look like conceding another goal.
69' SETTLED
The game is still being played at a high tempo, but neither side can find a way through. The Hull defence is holding firm, whilst Southampton are crowding their opponents out every time they have the ball.
66' SUPER CHALLENGE
Nathaniel Clyne scampers down the right wing with the ball at his feet, but is sent to the floor by a very firm but fair challenge from Maynor Figueroa.
65' FOUL
Paul McShane and Rickie Lambert have had their own private battle so far today, but this time McShane is penalised for a push on the England striker.
63' SOUTHAMPTON CHANGE
Victor Wanyama is withdrawn to muted applause, with Steven Davis taking his place.
61' SUPER SAVE
Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana are at it again. They share a one-two before Lallana fires a low shot at goal, which Steve Harper turns behind.
60' GOOD SINGING
The Hull fans who have made the long trip down from Humberside have suddenly sprung to life again. Southampton are not happy having given away that goal and Hull can sense an opportunity.
58' NICE TRY
Tom Huddlestone moves forward with the ball and lashes in a shot, which Artur Boruc smothers. Hull have grown in confidence since their goal.
55' SHOCKING PLAY
I mentioned in the first half that Victor Wanyama had given the ball away, and this time it has cost him. The former Celtic man receives a short kick from Artur Boruc , turns, and runs into Jake Livermore. Livermore passes to Yannick Sagbo, who takes one touch before firing a low shot past Artur Boruc. Southampton 3 - 1 Hull.
55' GOOOOAAAAALLL
HULL CITY HAVE A GOAL BACK!!!
53' GOOD DEFENDING
Tom Huddlestone sends in a free kick for Hull, but Rickie Lambert does a great job of blocking off Paul McShane and clearing the ball.
50' ALL SOUTHAMPTON
The Saints are still in charge here. What makes the scoreline even more impressive is the fact that they only had four shots on target in the first period. Resourceful.
46' HULL CHANGE
Robert Koren has come on for the visitors, with Ahmed Elmohamady leaving the action.
46' KICK OFF
Southampton get us underway.
45' OUT OF SIGHT
Southampton have got this game wrapped up before the interval. Goals from Morgan Schneiderlin, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana have put them in complete control and Hull don't look as if they can handle them. Lambert and Lallana have been the key men so far, the former heading a cross into the path of Schneiderlin to head home, before Lallana won a penalty which Lambert then converted. The third was a superb individual goal from Lallana, who is proving why he deserves a place in the England squad. At half time, the score is Southampton 3 - 0 Hull.
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half and Southampton are flying. Southampton 3 - 0 Hull.
45' OFF THE LINE!
Hull have their best chance so far. George Boyd curls across a corner from the right, Maynor Figueroa meets it at the far post and his downward header is kept out by the legs of Artur Boruc.
45' ADDED TIME
Two minutes are added on at the end of the first half. Meanwhile, Curtis Davies is given a final warning from the referee, this time for dissent.
44' BOOKING
The onrushing Luke Shaw is tripped by Curtis Davies, who is promptly shown a yellow card.
42' SHELL-SHOCKED
Steve Bruce doesn't look like he knows what to do on the touchline. It isn't as if his side have been bad, Southampton have just been unstoppable. The last time the Saints conceded more than one goal at home was in March, so it seems unlikely that Hull will find a way back into this.
39' HIGH FLYERS
If results go their way, Southampton could find themselves second in the table this afternoon, if only for a few hours. On this evidence they deserve it.
37' PURE BRILLIANCE
What a way to celebrate an England call-up. Adam Lallana receives the ball in the middle of the pitch, before setting off on a mazy run towards the left flank. He cuts back inside and suddenly finds himself one-on-one with Steve Harper. Cool as you like, Lallana curls a low shot past the goalkeeper and into the net. Southampton 3 - 0 Hull.
37' GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL
SOUTHAMPTON HAVE A THIRD!!!
33' SENSE OF HUMOUR
"He's off to Brazil, he's off to Brazil, he's Rickie Lambert, he's off to Brazil' rings around St Mary's. Roy Hodgson, in the director's box, has a big smile on his face upon hearing it - what does he know that we don't?
30' SUPERB PENALTY
Rickie Lambert is the man to power home the penalty, sending it into the roof of the net leaving Steve Harper with no chance. However, Harper is lucky to be on the pitch, as it was him that gave away the penalty. Rickie Lambert slipped a ball through to Adam Lallana who chased it down before having his legs taken away by the sliding legs of Steve Harper, who was only booked. Southampton 2 - 0 Hull.
30' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
SOUTHAMPTON DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!!!
29' PENALTY TO SOUTHAMPTON!!
A CHANCE TO DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!!
28' CHANCE TAKERS
According to the official stats, Hull have had three shots compared to Southampton's one. Despite that, the home side are still in the lead. Great way to take their chances.
26' NICE TRY
James Ward-Prowse protests his innocence after miscontrolling the ball out of play on the left touchline, and the Hull players look bemused as it takes a good five seconds for Phil Dowd to blow his whistle.
24' COOL
Steve Harper avoids a hairy moment here. Adam Lallana rushes in to chase down a loose ball, but Harper controls the ball under pressure before punting it upfield. An old dog with new tricks perhaps?
23' SLOPPY
Despite my previous comment, Victor Wanyama has given the ball away cheaply in the last couple of moments. Not something the Southampton management want to see, especially as his colleagues are having to cover for him.
21' GOOD PRESSURE
Southampton are dominating in the possession stakes, but are doing superbly when they lose it, busting a gut to run back and win it. A tactic that Mauricio Pochettino has drummed into his players.
18' SIMILARITIES
Now that Morgan Schneiderlin has his goal for Southampton, Tom Huddlestone will be hoping to emulate that for Hull, as both players perform a similar role for their teams. Huddlestone hasn't scored a goal since 2011, and has vowed not to cut his hair until he does so once again.
16' NOSEBLEED?
Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton's defensive midfield lynchpin, has his first goal of the season. James Ward-Prowse crosses from the right, Rickie Lambert heads it across goal, and Schneiderlin stretches every sinew in his neck to divert the ball into the top corner. Southampton 1 - 0 Hull.
16' GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL
SOUTHAMPTON TAKE THE LEAD!!!
14' FOUL?
Rickie Lambert is dragged to the ground by Paul McShane, and the Southampton fans appeal for a free kick in a dangerous position. The referee says no way and play continues.
12' OUCH
Yannick Sagbo wins the ball in midfield, surges forward and powers a shot goalwards, but Jose Fonte gets in the way. A painful blow, that.
10' PRODUCTION LINE
Nathaniel Clyne, Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse are three young players who are forming an integral part of this Southampton team. All three have looked bright and sharp this afternoon and will be keen to make a big impression.
8' DOMINATING
Since the opening few moments where Hull were in charge, Southampton have taken control and are now threatening their visitors. Jay Rodriguez in particular looks to be a real threat.
4' CHANCE!
The first real chance of the game falls to Southampton. Morgan Schneiderlin sends in a cross from the right and Rickie Lambert gets up to meet it, but his effort is cleared wide.
3' CONTROL
Hull have seen more of the ball so far, but the Southampton defence looks calm and confident, as well they might after their recent form. Tom Huddlestone is pulling the strings for the visitors.
1' IN ATTENDANCE
England manager Roy Hodgson is in the stands, and will have plenty of players to keep his eye on. Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert will be hoping to impress ahead of the international break.
1' KICK OFF
Hull, in their all-blue away kit, start the match kicking from left to right.
0' BREAKING HULL TEAM NEWS
The visitors are unchanged from their own victory over Sunderland last weekend. Danny Graham returns to the bench, whilst Robbie Brady is still not fit enough to return to the squad.
0' BREAKING SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS
Having made wholesale changes for their midweek cup tie with Sunderland, The Saints revert to a more familiar lineup. Artur Boruc returns in goal whilst the entire back four is changed, with Nathaniel Clyne, Jose Fonte, Dejan Lovren and Luke Shaw coming in. Victor Wanyama, Morgan Schneiderlin and James Ward-Prowse replace Steven Davis, Jack Cork and Tadanari Lee in midfield, whilst Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert take their places up front after their England news. 11 changes for the hosts.
0' FORM GUIDE
Southampton have the better record between the two sides, having won four of the last five fixtures between the two. Hull's last win away at Southampton was in 1951. The hosts are unbeaten in their last six home league games, having won the last three, and the only home goal they have conceded this season was against Sunderland in August.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Howard Webb, the originally scheduled referee for this fixture, has pulled out with injury, meaning Phil Dowd has stepped in. In 10 games this season, Mr Dowd has shown 38 yellow cards and only red. He has taken charge of Hull once this season, their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in August, during which time he showed their players three yellow cards.
0' CONTRASTING FORTUNES
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino was named manager of the month for October this week, while Steve Bruce was fine £10,000 by the FA for criticism of a referee. None of that will matter come 15:00, however.
0' HULL TEAM NEWS
Hull have several injury worries to contend with, especially after Sone Aluko was ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring tear. Danny Graham could return after missing the match with Sunderland under the rules of his loan move, but Allan McGregor and James Chester are both set to miss out with thigh and hamstring injuries respectively.
0' SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS
What a week it has been for the Saints. With Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana called into the England squad, along with James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw in the under-21 squad, spirits are high on the south coast. However, they are missing Pablo Osvaldo with a knee problem, whilst Guly Do Prado has undergone knee surgery and could miss several months.
