West Bromwich Albion vs. Crystal Palace
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME WEST BROMWICH ALBION 2, CRYSTAL PALACE 0.
After a first half best forgotten, and which will be remembered only for Berahino's 44th minute left foot volley just inside the post after a good run by Sessegnon, this game was no better in the second half. There really was nothing much for this sell-out crowd to enjoy on a wet and blustery day, in a pretty dreadful game where errors outnumbered moments of quality. A second goal after 83 minutes, when Gareth McAuley outjumped a disinterested Palace defence, doubled West Brom's lead and from then on they never looked in any trouble as they secured the three points. Palace, set up to spoil, had no real strategy once they went behind, and although they huffed and puffed in attack they had precious few chances. Although West Brom hardly impressed, lacking quality and fluency, they still had enough in them to beat Palace with ease - and on this showing it's hard to see when Palace's next point will come from. Not a game that will last long in the memory, though.
90' FOUR MINUTES ADDED ON
West Brom are attacking through the four minutes of added-on time, but show no signs of adding a third goal.
89' PALACE SHOT
Bolasie's stinging low drive for Palace is well-saved by Myhill.
86' LAST SUBSTITUTE
Sessegnon, who to me has been West Brom's stand-out player today, is replaced by Matej Vydra. That's it for substitutes as Steve Clarke changes his team to see this game out.
84' MINOR HANDBAGS
Some handbags between Puncheon and McAuley, but the referee calms things down and deems the incident not worthy of wielding his cards.
83' GOOOAAALLL!!! MCAULEY
West Brom are pressing forward at every chance, winning a succession of corners in the process. And Brunt's delivery goes straight to McAuley who buries the ball in the net from an unchallenged header.
80' LAST PALACE SUB
And Palace make their final throw of the dice, bringing on Dwight Gayle to replace defender Dikgacoi. That stops Kevin Philips from making a sentimental return against the team he did so well with for so long.
79' BRUNT MISSES
Sessegnon breaks down the right and pulls the ball back to Brunt, but his shot, on his weaker right foot, goes just wide. Nearly a carbon-copy of the earlier goal.
73' YACOB ON
Claudio Yacob replaces Morrison for the home team. Both sides have now used two substitutes.
73' LAST DITCH TACKLE
An in-swinging Brunt corner is half-saved by Speroni, who eventually grabs it. But the ball soon comes back in and Long is dispossessed by a superb last-ditch tackle from Moxey as he was about to shoot.
71' THOMAS BOOKED
Thomas is booked for a poor challenge on Berahino. That was the first yellow card of the match.
70' MORE ERRORS
Chamakh is first to a poor header from Delaney, but he can't get a shot in as he trips over the ball. That moment more or less sums up this whole match – error after error in unhelpful conditions!
65' PALACE SUBSTITUTION
Yannick Bolasie replaces Bannan for Palace. Bannan has been so anonymous this is the first time I've noticed he's been playing.
62' WASTED CHANCE
Another Palace corner after a speculative shot from Jedinak is deflected wide, although only the referee seems to have seen any deflection. From the corner Jedinak's free header goes just wide. He really should have scored with that one – Palace won't get many chances as good as that.
60' PALACE ATTACK
A shot from Puncheon is deflected, but Myhill saves neatly at the expense of a corner. Brighter from Palace, though – their first realistic attack of this second half.
57' WRONG OPTION
Sessegnon's shot from 25 yards is blocked. A ball to Long, who was free, would have been a much better option.
55' OFF THE LINE
Long is pushed over by Gabbidon just outside the edge of the Palace area. The free kick is curled in by Brunt and Gabbidon clears it off the line for another corner to the Baggies.
54' MORE ATTACKING
West Brom have advanced their wide midfielders and are now playing 4-3-3 to support Long. Clarke obviously wants to kill this game off as soon as possible, which a second West Brom goal would surely do.
51' GOOD ATTACK
A good teasing cross from Amalfitano doesn't reach Long as it's headed clear by Ward. A decent attack and a rare piece of quality.
48' MORE OF THE SAME
First signs are that this half will be just as nondescript as the first. No substitutions from either team, but a couple of errors from both already. Long, alone up front for the Baggies, looks frustrated at the lack of service he's received.
46' SECOND HALF
Crystal Palace get the second half underway. Now we'll see if there's any fight in them as they trail by one goal to West Brom. The Baggies have hardly looked impressive, but they now at least have a lead to build on.
45' HALF TIME WEST BROM 1, CRYSTAL PALACE 0
A swirling wind, a Palace team setup to spoil and a lack of quality from both teams made this one of the most lacklustre, error-strewn and nondescript halves of football I've seen for a long time. Just when it looked like the half would end goalless, with just one shot on target all half, the only moment of quality, from Sessegnon and Berahino, gave West Brom a lead they scarcely deserved. Palace would have been happy to go away with a point, so they'll need to change their game plan now if this isn't going to be their fifth successive away Premier League defeat.
45' GOAL FROM NOTHING
That goal came when Palace had the bulk of the possession, and silenced their supporters. Great work from Sessegnon to create the opening with a run down the left, but also a good volleyed finish from Berahino, his shot going just inside the post. We're now into the six minutes of time added on.
45' GOOOAAALLL!!! BERAHINO
Sessegnon finds Berhino, who slides the ball into the away goal from just inside the box. Suddenly we have a goal!
42' RESTLESS CROWD
Successive errors by Ridgewell and Mulumbu gift Palace an attack, and the home crowd is growing noticeably restless and critical. To be fair, there's not much to enjoy about this performance.
40' WELL OVER
Morrison shoots from 30 yards, but the ball flies way over the bar.
38' ERROR STREWN
West Brom are breaking more fluently, trying to turn the screw, but just aren't showing enough quality to break through – errors seem to be the order of the day as neither team can string together more than three or four passes in a row.
34' BREAK WASTED
For once a nicely weighted ball to Long from Morrison sets the Baggies' striker free, but he can't control the ball and another potentially promising situation comes to nothing.
31' FULL BACK SWITCH
The full backs have switched – Amalfitano moves across to right back so that Berahino can take up his favoured position on the left. West Brom are taking a while to settle into this new formation.
29' JONES REPLACED
Saido Berahino, playing out of position, replaces Jones at right back.
27' ANOTHER INJURY
Jones is short of mobility and seems to have injured his hamstring. It looks like we're going to have another injury-forced substitution.
23' ONE SHOT ON TARGET
Half way through the first half and the most notable action has been the departure of Guedioura on a stretcher. Palace are set up to spoil, and their game plan is working so far, with just one shot on target.
22' FORCED SUBSTITUTION
Puncheon comes on to replace the Algerian striker.
20' GUEDIOURA OFF INJURED
Guedioura is down and receiving treatment after a collision with Myhill. He writhes with pain, clutching his stomach, despite the collision looking minor. The stretcher and full medical team is called for, and Jason Puncheon is called on to replace him.
17' UNPREDICTABLE WIND
The unpredictable wind is causing real problems for West Brom, who like to play long balls for their speedy attackers to run onto. Some balls are holding up in the wind, whilst others run too far out of play.
15' TOO LONG
A long free kick into the Palace box causes some confusion amongst the defence, but is eventually cleared. West Brom fire the ball back in quickly, but it's too long for Mulumbu.
12' PALACE SHOT
From a Chamakh flick-on, Guedioura volleys towards the home goal. Myhill saves easily, but it is the first on-target shot of the game.
9' PALACE SETUP TO STOP BAGGIES
Palace, in their yellow third kit, have lined up in 4-2-3-1 formation, set up to stop West Brom playing from midfield. In their current predicament they'd probably be happy with a nil-nil draw – it'd be their first away point of the season.
6' CHASE FOR LONG
A long ball forward is chased by Long, but he can't stop the ball from going out for a goal-kick. Speroni started to come then stopped – if Long had got that the Palace ‘keeper would have been stranded in no-man's land.
4' BAGGIES PRESSURE
A neat flick from Long leads to a second West Brom corner after Gabbidon puts the ball out. West Brom are doing all the attacking so far.
3' WIND CAUSING PROBLEMS
The Baggies are attacking from the off, and win an early corner. Palace clear it quickly and Myhill mops up after the swirling wind causes Ridgewell all sorts of problems in the air.
1' WE'RE OFF!
After an impeccably observed minute's silence for Remembrance Sunday, Referee Neil Swarbrick blows his whistle and West Brom kick-off. This is West Brom's first sell-out of the season – many of the extra fans today will no doubt be hoping to see a thrashing of bottom club Palace.
0' CRYSTAL PALACE TEAM
Julian Speroni , Joel Ward, Damien Delaney, Danny Gabbidon, Dean Moxey, Mile Jedinak, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Barry Bannan, Jerome Thomas, Adlene Guedioura, Marouane Chamakh. Substitutes: Lewis Price, Adrian Mariappa, Stuart O'Keefe, Jason Puncheon, Yannick Bolasie, Dwight Gayle, Kevin Phillips.
0' WEST BROMWICH ALBION TEAM
Boaz Myhill, Billy Jones, Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Liam Ridgewell, Youssouf Mulumbu, James Morrison, Morgan Amalfitano, Stephane Sessegnon, Chris Brunt, Shane Long. Substitutes: Luke Daniels, Markus Rosenberg, Claudio Yacob, Saido Berahino, Matej Vydra, Diego Lugano, Goran Popov.
0' REF WATCH
Today's referee is Neil Swarbrick, who has refereed five Premier League matches this season without wielding a red card – his only sending off this campaign being Stephen Warnock of Leeds in A Championship match at Reading in September. He averages a fraction over three yellow cards each game, although he booked five players in his last match out, Ma City's midweek capital one Cup victory at Newcastle.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
West Brom have failed to win any of their last five meetings with Palace, dating back to the 2006-07 season, drawing three and losing two matches, although these clubs have not met since playing in the Championship in 2009-10. Those three draws in this sequence were all 1-1 draws. In the Premier league, however, these times have only met in the -flight, however, these teams have only met in the 2004/05 season, with West Brom winning 2-0 away from home and the match at The Hawthorns ending in a 2-2 draw.
0' CRYSTAL PALACE
Palace, bottom of the Premier League and with only one win in all competitions all season – over Sunderland in August – look to be out of their depth at this level. Managerless, having parted company with Ian Holloway last week after just eight matches, and with caretaker Keith Millen saying he is not the man to take the club forward, they look to be in near disarray, and turning their season around will be a touch ask for whoever replaces Holloway. Away from home, Palace have lost all four matches this season, scoring two goals but conceding nine, and even worse, in the past three away matches they have mustered a total of only two shots on target. They are also the only Premier League team to have conceded four penalties this season. Defender Jonny Parr could return for the first time since April having recovered from an ankle ligament injury, and Damien Delaney is expected to play despite an on-going ankle problem.
0' WEST BROMWICH ALBION
After a poor start to the season, West Brom's first home league win of the season, over Sunderland, revitalised them, and since then they have lost only once, at Anfield last weekend. The four gals conceded in this match must have been a shock to a team which who had conceded just three in their previous five Premier League matches. The run prior to Anfield included victory at Old Trafford, but manager Steve Clarke will be aware that despite their mid-table position their only home league victory of this campaign - and their only home clean sheet in 14 matches going back to December - remains that win over Sunderland. So both Clarke and Baggies supporters will be disappointed if they fail to take all three points from today's encounter. Clarke is likely to be without midfielders Morgan Amalfitano (knee) and Scott Sinclair (hamstring).
