Minute Commentary
90' NORWICH 0-0 CARDIFF
This one has ended goalless and might just be last on Match of the Day tonight, but I can assure you it had drama aplenty. Norwich dominated the first half, as Gary Hooper had chances that he couldn't take, Johnny Howson struck the post from close range and Leroy Fer had a volley cleared off the line. Yet the best opportunity of the first 45 minutes went to Jordan Mutch as his point blank effort was expertly saved by John Ruddy. The second period wasn't quite as lively as the first, with the hosts again the better side, but they didn't create clear-cut opportunities. However, the match was not to end in tame fashion as first a goal-mouth scramble enused in injury time before Fer kicked the ball into an empty net when he had been ordered to give it back to David Marshall for a foul. After a brief period of confusion, the Carrow Road faithful's celebrations were cut short as the referee did the right thing in disallowing the goal, and the game ended 0-0. A point doesn't do much help to either of these teams, with the Canaries still sitting in 18th position. The Bluebirds move up to 15th, and they will feel a sense of relief that a bizarre goal wasn't allowed against them for a second week running. I wouldn't want to have been the post match interviewer for Malky Mackay had that goal stood.....
90' DISALLOWED GOAL
I'll try and make this concise - a foul is given to Cardiff inside their half, so Robert Snodgrass takes a throw-in that Leroy Fer is expected to pass back to David Marshall. However, the Dutchman unsportingly kicks the ball into the back of the net with the last kick of the game. Carrow Road erupts, and so does Malky Mackay on the touchline. Initially it looks like the goal will stand, but Mike Jones does the right thing and disallows it, and we finish 0-0. I haven't seen anything like that in a long while.
90' CONFUSION
What is happening here? Bear with me, because this is absolutely bizzare. The referee has a huge decision to make here.....
90' PENALTY BOX DRAMA
What a finish to this match we are having! Nathan Redmond puts in a wonderful ball that is on a silver platter for Leroy Fer, but the midfielder's header from the penalty spot is too central and Marshall can parry away. Cardiff aren't out of the woods though because a succession of players in yellow shirts take shots at goal that are blocked by legs, heads and everything you could think of. Finally Russell Martin shoots wide and the visitors have a very welcome goal kick. One minute left.
90' FOUR MINUTES ADDED ON
There will be four minutes of stoppage time at Carrow Road as Norwich push for that elusive goal. How sweet a goal would be for either of these two sides.
88' GETTING BACK ON TOP
Unsurprisingly it is Chris Hughton's men who look more eager for the win here, and they are just starting to reassert their dominance as the clock ticks down. The most important thing for these two is not to lose, but you sense that Cardiff would definitely be happier with a point.
85' HALF CHANCE GONE
Alexander Tettey whips in a ball from the right that is met by Johan Elmander, but it was behind the Swede and he couldn't get anywhere near enough purchase on his header. You have to give credit to the Bluebirds - after a first half onslaught they have shut up shop very well in this second 45 minutes. Still time left though.....
82' PROMISING MOVE BREAKS DOWN
Craig Bellamy does well to evade the offisde trap once, but he is caught out a second time and a promising position for the visitors is wasted. The Welsh veteran should have done better there with the experience he has. Strangely, given the pattern of the match thus far, it is Cardiff who are having most of the play as this one sprints towards its conclusion.
81' INTO THE FINAL TEN
Time is ticking away and we are into the last ten minutes at Carrow Road. There have been few clear-cut chances in this second half, but there has been more than enough to suggest that one of these two can grab a last gasp winner. Who fancies their chances?
78' REDMOND MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Nathan Redmond looks an absolute livewire at the moment, the youngster again finding a yard of space and chancing his arm from range. David Marshall - should I even bother finishing this sentence? With that goalkeeper today it has been a case of copy and paste. Great effort, even better save.
76' DECENT EFFORT
Nathan Redmond, who has just come on for the Canaries himself rifles a first-time shot narrowly over the crossbar following a cleared corner. Fifteen minutes remain, and time is running out for the hosts.
73' MARSHALL DENIES ELMANDER
Nearly an instant introduction from Johan Elmander as he gets on the end of a flick on and lashes a strike towards the near top corner. However, as has been the pattern for most of this match it is David Marshall to the rescue for Cardiff. He deserves a top of the range meal tonight and a night on the town - he's been brilliant for the visitors.
72' CHANGE FOR THE HOSTS
Chris Hughton decides to change things up a little bit, replacing Anthony Pilkington with Johan Elmander. Meanwhile Craig Bellamy replaces Gary Medel for the visitors. Attacking substitutions from both managers there - nice to see.
69' SUPER COMPOSURE
Brilliant take by David Marshall there as he prevents Martin Olsson's teasing delivery from finding Hooper at the back post with a one-armed catch that is as cool as you like. It says a lot about Norwich's dominance that the keeper has been Cardiff's best player today.
66' INCHES AWAY
Gary Hooper has been busy all day and he so nearly sets up the first goal of the afternoon as he shows great trickery in the box to take the ball past two men before firing it across the face of goal. The sliding Anthony Pilkington is a matter of centimetres from getting his toe to it and diverting it in, but once more for the Canaries it is not to be. Not quite Gazza-esque, but dramatic all the same.
65' DISAPPOINTING ATTEMPT
It is Peter Whittingham who decides to have a pop, but the ball is easily blocked by the four man wall. After that brief bit of respite for Cardiff, it is the hosts who are back in possession now.
63' HOLDING THEM OFF
The tempers continue to boil for Norwich as they have to be patient when Cardiff have a long period of possession on the edge of their area. Leroy Fer snaps though and brings down Gary Medel with a mistimed tackle. Free kick for the visitors in a central position.....
59' FIRST BOOKING OF THE DAY
We have our first yellow card in Norwich and Alexander Tettey can have no complaints. Tettey went in late on Don Cowie, planting his studs into the Cardiff substitute after the Canaries had cheaply given the ball away in the middle of the park. Frustration is just beginning to grow for the home team and their fans as they fail to take advantage of their overall dominance.
58' HOOPER JUST OVER
Gary Hooper is really making a nuisance of himself up front for Norwch, this time using his strength to hold off Andrew Taylor and get his head on an outswinging corner. His effort flies narrowly over the bar though, and we still wait for our first goal of the afternoon at Carrow Road.
56' PENALTY SHOUT FOR NORWICH
The majority of Carrow Road cry out in unison as Gary Hooper's snap shot from just inside the area strikes the arm of Steven Caulker. The referee is having none of it though, and rightly so. The ball cannoned up off Caulker's leg and onto his arm - that would have been incredibly generous.
54' CARDIFF GETTING USED TO IT
Norwich once more go for the ball over the top towards Hooper, but the Bluebirds see it out comfortably this time as you sense they are becoming more and more comfortable with defending it. Sebastisan Bassong had Leroy Fer in acres of space in the centre as well - bad decision making from the defender.
51' SAME TACTIC NEARLY WORKS
The hosts try to release Hooper over the top again as Anthony Pilkington spreads a glorious cross-field pass towards the forward, but Ben Turner arrives just in the nick of time to head the ball away.
49' LOOKING SOLID AT THE BACK
We are only four minutes into this second period, but it already looks like the Bluebirds will be far more resolute for the remainder of the game. They are getting in Norwich's faces and denying them the space they granted them in the first half. For the moment at least, Mackay's team talk looks to be working.
46' BACK IN ACTION
We are back under way at Carrow Road. Cardiff have made two changes, sending on Aron Gunnarsson and Don Cowie for Kim Bo-Kyung and Peter Odemwingie respectively.
45' NORWICH 0-0 CARDIFF
The old adage says that looks can be deceiving, and that principle certainly applies here. If you hadn't have watched that first half you would be forgiven for thinking that it was a tight, cagey affair. You would have been wrong, however, as it has been anything but. Both sides have created chances with the best of them going to Jordan Mutch, but he was denied by a superb John Ruddy save midway through the first period. Aside from that though, it has been all Norwich as they have layed siege to their opponents' goal, with Leroy Fer having a volley cleared off the line, Johnny Howson hitting the post and Gary Hooper missing a succession of half chances. Despite their perilous position in the league and their woeful lack of form, the Canaries have acquitted themselves brilliantly and Chris Hughton will surely be telling his players that more of the same will see them take the three points. While the visitors look like they might have a goal in them, they have been second best so far, and Malky Mackay will have to rally his troops in the changing room. Join us back here in a couple of minutes for live text commentary of the second 45 minutes - I promise goals are not far away.
45' GOALLESS AT THE BREAK
The half time whistle sounds and somehow Cardiff go in level at half time - 0-0 at the interval.
45' NORWICH SHOULD BE AHEAD
Robert Snodgrass is again a thorn in the side of Cardiff on that right wing as he gets to the byline and finds Howson at the near post. The midfielder didn't know much about it, but it hits his leg and cannons back off the post. After a goal-line scramble Marshall collects the ball and the visitors can breathe.
43' ANOTHER DIG FROM RANGE
Johnny Howson runs into all sorts of space in the Cardiff half, but he has little support alongside him so decides to go for goal himself. Marshall is forced into another good save as the ball was heading on target, and the visitors' goal is again under threat not long after after Russell Martin gets on the end of Snodgrass' dinked cross. The defender can't find the target though.
41' SNAP SHOTS FOR BOTH TEAMS
End to end again here as first Gary Hooper nearly catches out David Marshall with his audacious shot on the turn from 40 yards out before Kim Bo-Kyung drives a daisy cutter towards the near post that John Ruddy does well to hold onto.
39' PETERING INTO HALF TIME
They have been well and truly under the cosh for the majority of this game, but Cardiff are doing a good job of quelling any Norwich rhythm as half time approaches. The Canaries will be pleased with their performance, but they will be wondering how they don't have a goal to show for their efforts.
36' ANOTHER CLEARANCE OFF THE LINE
The Bluebirds just aren't dealing with set pieces at the moment and they are fortunate to escape here as the referee gives a free-kick their way for pushing on Steven Caulker. Leroy Fer met the corner with a firm header, and again it was hoofed off the line, but it wouldn't have stood anyway.
34' CARDIFF CAN'T GET OUT
Malky Mackay's men are really struggling to get out of their own half here. They are camped on the edge of their own area as Norwich continue to ramp up the pressure. The chances have been kept to a minimum in the last five minutes, but it is still the hosts who are having all of the ball.
30' CLEARED OFF THE LINE
The action just keeps on coming in Norwich as Cardiff clear the ball off the line to prevent their opponents from taking the lead. A deep corner is met on the volley by Leroy Fer - Marshall for once is beaten, but Theophile-Catherine is on hand to boot clear. Surely a goal is just around the corner in this one?
29' ANOTHER FINE SAVE
Both keepers are looking in fine fettle today - this time it is David Marshall's turn to take a bow as he does very well to readjust as Johnny Howson's deflected shot from range takes a deflection on its way to goal. Still goalless at Carrow Road, but watchable to say the least.
25' INCREDIBLE SAVE
Totally against the run of play, the visitors nearly take the lead! Lovely flowing football from the Welsh side as first Peter Odemwingie threads the ball into Campbell's path, and the striker intelligently pulls it back for Mutch who simply has to score. John Ruddy has other ideas though, spreading himself well to prevent Cardiff from taking the lead. Mutch should have done better, but that was top drawer from the former Everton keeper.
22' CONSTANT PRESSURE
Leroy Fer stamps his authority on this match for the first time this afternoon with a well weighted pass down the inside flank. Martin Olsson is onto it in a flash, and his effort from the angle is well saved on the stretch by Marshall. The danger isn't over for the Bluebirds though, because Snodgrass is there for the rebound. The midfielder rashly strikes wide of the near post however.
20' TEMPO SLOWING DOWN
The players seem to be taking a little bit of a breather here following that quarter of an hour of end to end football. Norwich are still in control though, passing the ball around comfortably and winning it back quickly on the rare occasion that they do lose it. They look up for this today the Canaries.
17' LOOKING TO GET IN BEHIND
The hosts seem to have a clear tactic this afternoon to best utilise Gary Hooper, playing the ball over the top and using the Englishman's pace to try and worry the Cardiff backline. It nearly works here but David Marshall just about gets there in time. Chris Hughton will be very happy with what he has seen from his men so far.
14' OPEN GAME
After a nervy opening couple of minutes, this match has really started to liven up. Cardiff launch a long ball forward, with Jordan Mutch flicking it on for the onrushing Frazier Campbell. The forward just fails to get the vital touch though and John Ruddy can breathe a sigh of relief. Soon after Steven Caulker should do better with a free header from a corner.
12' SHARP MOVEMENT UP TOP
Gary Hooper looks to be relishing a rare Premier League start this afternoon, and he is looking lively up front for the home side. His clever movement is rewarded with a through ball into his path, but he pulls the trigger too late and Ben Turner clears the danger. If Hooper would have looked up there he would have seen Anthony Pilkington haring into the box in acres of space as well.
10' MAZY RUN DESERVED BETTER
Excellent stuff from Robert Snodgrass as he ducks and weaves past three challenges inside the Cardiff area. He gets to the byline and tries to pull the ball back for the waiting Gary Hooper, but John Ruddy is alert to the danger. The hosts are firmly on top at present.
8' RASPING EFFORT
Norwich earn themselves a corner, and it is straight off the training ground as it is pulled back towards the edge of the area for Martin Olsson to hit it - that he does and he nearly takes the leather off the ball as he strikes it just over the top of the bar. He hit that cleanly enough, and the Canaries are just starting to grow into the game here.
6' FIRST ATTACK OF NOTE
It is Cardiff who are the first team to string a few passes together and they get in down the right-hand side through Jordan Mutch. The in-form midfielder finds Frazier Campbell with his back to goal on the penalty spot, but Michael Turner easily muscles the striker off the ball.
3' ANXIOUS START
As you would expect given the magnitude and importance of this game, it has been a very nervy opening by both sides so far. There have been no periods of possession for either team, with the ball pinging around the centre of the pitch for the most part. The Norwich fans are doing their best to create a daunting atmosphere for the travelling players though.
1' KICK OFF
Here we go - it is the visitors who get us kicked off at Carrow Road.
0' FULL TEAMS
Norwich: Ruddy, Martin, Turner, Bassong, Olsson, Tettey, Snodgrass, Howson, Fer, Pilkington, Hooper. Subs: Whittaker, Johnson, Van Wolfswinkel, Elmander, Nash, Redmond, Ryan Bennett. Cardiff: Marshall, Theophile-Catherine, Caulker, Turner, Taylor, Medel, Odemwingie, Kim, Mutch, Whittingham, Campbell. Subs: Hudson, Gunnarsson, Cowie, Mason, Maynard, Lewis, Bellamy.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel is rated as 50-50 for the Canaries as the striker tries to recover from a foot injury in time, while Johan Elmander is looking for a rare start after coming back from a hamstring problem. Elliot Bennett, meanwhile is still not fit enough after his recent knee surgery. For the visitors, Craig Bellamy will return to the squad after being rested for the Chelsea clash shortly after playing his last ever game for Wales. Jordan Mutch looks probable to start in midfield alongside Kim Bo-Kyung, who was another to be rested last weekend, after a good run of form in recent weeks.
0' REF WATCH
Today's referee will be Chester's Mike Jones as the 45-year-old takes charge of his fourth Premier League match this season. In his previous three clashes, Jones has given out a relatively lenient nine bookings, averaging at three yellow cards per game. However, he has also taken out his red card already this season, so this afternoon's players cannot take his generous caution average for granted. Many people will remember Jones as the man who allowed the infamous “beach ball goal” to stand when Sunderland beat Liverpool at the Stadium of Light four years ago. Luckily for him, he will never have to look at that beach ball again as the Black Cats apparently sold it to a foreign club for an inflated price. You wouldn't believe that joke took me ten minutes to think of would you?
0' MORE MISERY FOR MALKY?
After a superb start to the season in which Cardiff defeated Man City and held Everton at their home ground, you can't help but feel that things are starting to unnecessarily spiral out of control in Wales. Vincent Tan has hardly endeared himself to the fans in his tenure at the Bluebirds, changing the home shirt from the traditional blue to a red colour, and replacing the reliable and respected head of recruitment Ian Moody with a 23-year-old who was on work experience at the club. Call me a cynic, but the fact that the youngster from Kazakhstan is friends with Vincent Tan's son might just have something to do with that appointment. Anyway, things are not going so well on the pitch either, as the Bluebirds were the victims of a bizarre refereeing decision that allowed Chelsea back into the game last weekend, with Cardiff eventually going down 4-1 and leaving them sitting just a place above the relegation zone. The tonic is simple for Malky Mackay – he needs his side to secure three points today.
0' CANARIES NOT ON SONG
Chris Hughton has been making a lot of positive noises in the build up to this one, as he realises that the mood surrounding the club is less than buoyant at present. The former Newcastle boss has been trying to reassure the Norwich fans that there is no need to start panicking, as they currently sit one point better off than at this stage in the last campaign, when they finished in mid table. However, it is easy to see why the Carrow Road faithful are starting to get restless, as their recent record in the league makes for sobering reading. They have lost four of their last five games in the division, and they have only netted six times in their last eight matches. Add to this the fact that they currently occupy one of the relegation spots, and you can easily understand why today's clash is a huge one for Hughton and his team – no less than a win will do you sense.
0' PREVIEW
Not many people would have forseen the trouble that Chris Hughton and Malky Mackay are currently in after just eight games in this season's Premier League. There are many similarities between the two, as both made big signings this summer to try and further improve on impressive campaigns last year as Norwich finished 11th in England's top division and Cardiff were promoted comfortably from the Championship. Additionally, the Canaries and the Bluebirds are both placed in perilous positions with the former perched in 18th and the latter sitting uncomfortably just a place above. Positivity was the buzz word for both of these clubs going into this season, but poor runs of form and a failure for the big summer signings to perform have condemned Hughton and Mackay to a period of uncertainty over their respective futures. Their job security might not be certain, but one thing is for sure – a win this afternoon would be a monumental boost for whoever gets it. Join us here at 15:00 for live text commentary of this intriguing clash.
