West Bromwich Albion vs. Sunderland
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME
The referee blows for time and West Brom have won comfortably. They absorbed early pressure from the visitors, but the first goal knocked all the stuffing out of Sunderland and their confidence visibly sagged. They did have two good chances shortly after conceding, but wasted those, and the longer the game went on the clearer it became that this would be a home win. West Brom's confidence grew after a shaky start and they looked particularly good on the break, attacking with pace and in numbers. The three points lift West Brom virtually to mid table, but things look dire for Sunderland. On today's showing, they look short of ideas and confidence, and the potential loss of Fletcher to a shoulder injury will be a major blow. Despite Di Canio's post-match signals to the away supporters that this is “his fault”, Sunderland's problems look substantial and I wonder how long it'll be before the fans turn on the controversial manager. The two bad mistakes in goal by Westwood to gift West Brom their first two goals will be particularly worrying for the Black Cats.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Amalfitano makes it 3-0 as he arrives late to slam the ball in after a neat interplay out wide from West Brom. A nicely worked goal on his home debut.
90' FIVE MINUTES
The fourth official signals for five minutes of time added on.
88' NEW FORMATIONS
Sunderland are playing a 6-4-0 as they try to keep the home team out. West Brom, for their part, are responding by attacking with six or seven players. It's more like a game of “three and in” than a normal match!
84' BAD DAY FOR THE BLACK CATS
As well as the injury to Fletcher, Ki and Johnson are clearly carrying knocks, with Ki down receiving treatment for two minutes. This is a game that Sunderland will want to quickly forget.
80' CHANCES GALORE
West Brom are turning the screw and looking to take advantage of their numerical supremacy. They waste a number of decent changes, though. Sunderland are offering nothing and just trying to contain the home team.
77' FLETCHER OFF
Fletcher can't carry on, and is receiving attention from both clubs' phyisos in the tunnel. Sunderland are down to ten men, two goals behind and looking dead and buried.
75' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ridgewell scores his first ever Baggies goal to double their lead, arriving late at the far post to bury a cross which was parried into his path by Westwood. Again, big questions over the goalkeeping.
74' CARRYING ON
Sunderland have already used all three subs, so it looks like Fletcher will bravely carry on despite clearly carrying a shoulder injury.
72' INJURY
Fletcher is down and a stretcher is called for immediately. He was stretching for a shot in the goalmouth and landed awkwardly on his shoulder
68' SUBSTITUTES
Sunderland replace Gardner with Lee Cattermole, whilst West Brom make a double substitution, with Anelka and Sinclair replaced by Claudio Yacob and Victor Anichebe.
67' MISS
Anelka's unmarked header from just seven yards goes well wide, but very nearly deflects in from a Sunderland defender.
64' DEFLECTION – OR HANDBALL?
A shot from Altidore is deflected wide, with Sunderland players screaming that Ridgewell deflected it wide with his hand. Ref Phil Dowd is not interested, though.
60' CHANCE
Sessegnon smartly turns his marker after a Baggies throw, but shoots over the bar from a good position.
58' SUBSTITUTE
Borini is replaced by giant American Jozy Altidore for Sunderland.
55' ATTENDENCE
Today's attendance of 24,595 is a good one considering West Brom's parlous league position and not having won at home since March. Sunderland took their full allocation of 2,500.
52' BAGGIES BREAK
A Sunderland cross fizzes across the Baggies box without anyone getting a touch, and the home team take the opportunity to flood forward in their first serious attack of the half but it comes to nothing.
49' SUNDERLAND ATTACKING
The Black Cats apply pressure and win a couple of successive corners, but can't seriously threaten the home goal.
46' SUBSTITUTE
Di Canio replaces Giaccherini with Mavrias at the break. The Italian initially looked lively but faded soon after.
46' SECOND HALF STARTS
West Brom kick off looking to consolidate their pressure and increase their lead. You can be sure the Sunderland players will have received a real ear-bashing from Di Canio at half-time. What this does to their seemingly rock-bottom levels of confidence we'll see in the next 45 minutes.
45' HALF TIME – BAGGIES LEAD
After soaking up initial Sunderland pressure, West Brom look well worth their one goal lead. Since scoring, they've been the only team in this, breaking forward in numbers whenever possible and displaying some neat, flowing, attacking play. But for Anelka's frequent habit of being caught offside they might be a couple more goals ahead. Sunderland have offered nothing since conceding, and seem to have lost all confidence. I'd hate to be a Black Cats player in the dressing room having seen the mood Di Canio is in. Westwood, whose fumble led to the goal, must be particularly uneasy about going in for half time.
42' BAGGIES BREAKING
Another promising West Brom break is cut out by Sunderland's last man O'Shea. The Baggies are now well on top and making all the running in this game.
38' ANELKA'S INFLUENCE GROWS
Despite being stupidly caught off-side a couple of times early on, Anelka is coming more and more into this game, as West Brom attack in numbers whenever they can, searching for a second goal.
34' DI CANIO RAGES
Di Canio flies into one of his trademark rages after Sessegnon is pulled back. Ki is rightly booked, but that doesn't stop Di Canio letting the fourth official know exactly how he feels about the decision.
29' END TO END STUFF
This game is flowing from end to end, and after Sunderland's corner breaks down West Brom break and both Amalfitano and Ridgewell have decent chances, but neither can convert them.
28' DEFLECTION
A goal-bound left-foot shot from Johnson is deflected just wide, and Sunderland can't take advantage of the resulting corner. That was the Black Cats' best chance of the game so far.
22' GOAL AGAINST HIS OLD CLUB
How many times does it happen that a player scores against his old team? Sessegnon didn't celebrate the goal, but Baggies fans are making up for that with a rousing chorus of “Thank you Di Canio.”
19' GOOOAAALLL!!!
A flowing WBA move puts them one up as Sessegnon slams the ball home after Westwood is unable to hold onto a Sinclair shot.
16' BLACK CAT PRESSURE
Sunderland having the best of this game now – a Giaccherini free kick is scrambled away and Sunderland win a third corner. West Brom looking panicked at the back.
12' SHOT
A poor touch from McAuley allows Fletcher to shoot for Sunderland, but the ‘keeper isn't seriously troubled.
8' EVEN GAME
Both sides pressing to look for the opposition's weaknesses. Borini looking very lively up front for Sunderland.
5' FUMBLE
Westwood fumbles the ball under pressure from Anelka, but recovers in time and keeps possession.
3' BAGGIES CORNER
Good attack from Sunderland forced away by Celustka for the game's first corner.
1' AND WE'RE OFF
Sunderland in their yellow away kits kick off.
0' SUNDERLAND TEAM
Keiren Westwood,Ondrej Celustka, Jack Colback, Mobido Diakite, John O'Shea, Sung-Yueng Ki, Craig Gardner, Adam Johnson, Emanuele Giaccherini, Steven Fletcher, Fabio Borini.
0' WEST BROM TEAM
Boaz Myhill, Billy Jones, Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Liam Ridgewell, Morgan Amalfitano, Youssouf Mulumbu,James Morrison,Scott Sinclair, Stephane Sessegnon, Nicolas Anelka.
0' TEAM NEWS
West Brom's Stephane Sessegnon, signed from Sunderland at the end of the transfer window, has now been granted a work permit and is expected to make his debut, whilst the Baggies also wait on the fitness of strikers Matej Vydra and Shane Long. Sunderland have Lee Cattermole fit again and he may return in midfield, and are hoping Italian striker Emanuele Giaccherini has fully recovered from his hamstring injury. In addition, captain John O'Shea returns from suspension, but Wes Brown is still out with a calf injury.
0' STRUGGLING
With these teams occupying the bottom two places in the Premier League, both will be desperate to register their first league win of the season, which would potentially move them out of the relegation zone. In fact, West Brom have not won at home since March 9th, and only scored their first league goal last weekend, whilst Sunderland have only recorded two wins since January, when controversial manager Di Canio first arrived. So both managers will know the importance of taking this opportunity to pick up three points, and that a defeat could cause further angst amongst supporters.
