Aston Villa vs. Newcastle United
Minute Commentary
I told you this had the potential to be a cracker, and I wasn't wrong as Newcastle found a way to take a full share of the spoils away from Villa Park. The visitors had the better of the opening 20 minutes, and got their reward as Loic Remy teed up Hatem Ben Arfa to tap the ball home. The rest of the first half was dominated by Paul Lambert's men, but they couldn't make the most of their possession and had to rely on the aerial ability of Christian Benteke to get them back on level terms midway through the second half. Just as you were thinking the Magpies would have been content to see the game out for a draw, they went straight up the other end and silenced the raucous atmosphere through a neat finish from substitute Yoan Gouffran. Despite seeing a decent penalty appeal waved away by the otherwise impressive Mike Dean, Newcastle saw the game out efficiently, and now sit comfortably in 8th place. Crisis? What crisis?
That's it - Mike Dean blows his whistle, and Newcastle have secured back-to-back wins in the Premier League. That will be a hard one to take for Villa fans.
They have barely deserved it - but they have worked hard for it, and it looks like the Magpies have wrapped up the three points here. One minute remains, and the ball is deep in Aston Villa territory.
Moussa Sissoko finds Cisse running through the middle, and the forward has a chance to finish this one off, but he dallies on the ball and has to pass it backwards for Sammy Ameobi. Goals haven't been easy to come by as of late for Cisse - you can see why.
The board goes up - there will be four minutes of injury time. How's your nerve Newcastle fans?
Yohan Cabaye is taken off for the visitors as Alan Padrew looks to run down the clock - Sammy Ameobi on in his place. Replays show that Ben Arfa might have had a case there - it looked like Ciaran Clark simply pushed him to ground. If Villa equalise late on here, something tells me Pardew might just have a thing or two to say about that.
Mike Dean has a big decision to make as Ben Arfa twists and turns in the penalty box and goes to ground under the attentions of the Villa defence. It looked interesting to say the least, but Dean is having none of it and waves play on. Four minutes remain for the hosts to salvage something here.
It's all looking a tad old fashioned at the moment as Paul Lambert's men are pumping the ball long towards the sizeable frame of Benteke, hoping for a telling flick on, while the Newcastle defence are throwing themselves towards the ball in order to head clear the danger. It ain't pretty, but you can't take your eyes off it.
Cheick Tiote, who has just replaced Vurnon Anita, worries Guzan with a brilliant strike from distance but it is just wide of the far post, before Fabian Delph repeats that exact same trick up the other end for Aston Villa. Just under ten minutes remain at Villa Park - is there another twist in this absorbing tale?
Yoan Gouffran had only been on the field for just over ten minutes when he netted there - he came on for Loic Remy just after the hour mark. The French forward is involved here as well as his dinked cross is headed just wide of the near post by Papiss Cisse. The Newcastle fans have found their voices again.
I did fear for Alan Pardew and his side, but as it turns out they didn't need my sympathies. They have once more silenced the home crowd with a goal out of nothing. Hatem Ben Arfa is again instrumental as his rasping drive is parried out by Brad Guzan, with Gouffran there to leather the ball into the roof of the net. The Magpies have shown incredible character here - Villa will have to do exactly the same.
Ignore everything I have just said - Yoan Gouffran has restored Newcastle's lead!
You fear for Alan Pardew's men now as the hosts have the momentum, and with Libor Kozak on the field, they have more artillery as well. Mathieu Debuchy loses his cool with a cynical foul, picking up a booking for his troubles - that could be the first of many you feel.
They have huffed and puffed, and evenutally Villa have blown the Newcastle house down! In the end it was relatively simple, as Benteke rose highest to nod home a corner. Tim Krul will be desperately disappointed as he came for it, but didn't get it. As for Benteke, that is 19 goals in his last 21 games for the Villains - not bad.....
Christian Benteke levels matters for Villa! We're all square at Villa Park!
A change for Aston Villa here as Karim El Ahmadi is taken off, with striker Libor Kozak coming on in his place.
It is the Magpies who have been living on their nerves for the last 20 minutes or so, but Aston Villa fans have their hearts in their mouths here as Vurnon Anita pulls the ball back from the byline for Papiss Cisse. Cisse swivels and shoots, but Clark blocks the ball on its way through to goal. Surely this can't stay at 1-0?
Matthew Lowton picks up possession wide out on the right, but his first-time cross is dramatically mis-hit. Tim Krul has to be sharp, though, because it actually turns out to be a shot on target - half an hour left for the Villains to find an equaliser.
This match is really cooking on gas at the moment - it is attack after attack! The visitors go straight up the other end, and Loic Remy nearly gets on the end of a dangerous cross from the left, but Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark just about do enough to see the Frenchman off.
No two ways about it - Villa should be level. Gabriel Agbonlarhor will not get a better chance this afternoon as he gets on the end of Andreas Weimanns' wonderful cross, but he kicks the ball into the gorund from six yards out, and Tim Krul watches the ball trickle behind for a goal kick. The Dutch goalkeeper can count himself lucky he wasn't picking it out of his net.
They are having most of the ball, but Aston Villa have to be careful as Newcastle pose a threat on the counter. Hatem Ben Arfa emphasises this with a brilliant solo run from deep, but he skews his long range effort well wide of the target.
Newcastle are living dangerously here, and there is still well over half an hour to go in this one. The ball falls nicely for Antonio Luna at the back stick, and he is urged to take a shot. He ignores the crowd, though, and rifles in a cross at 100mph that goes above and beyond his teammates in the centre. The visitors survive.
Whether or not this a conscious tactic Paul Lambert made at half time I don't know, but the hosts are definitely playing with a lot more width at the start of this half. Luna and Lowton are seeing a lot of the ball, but they are yet to find the killer ball. The home fans are roaring their team on here as they sense an equaliser.
Villa have come out like a team who have just been put firmly in place by their manager as they force an early corner. The delivery causes a bit of a melee inside the Newcastle area, but Yohan Cabaye eventually boots the ball clear. Nervy looking defending from the Magpies there.
Aston Villa get the second half started, looking for their first goal, and points, at Villa Park this season.
Even though it was Paul Lambert's side who had most of the possession during that first period, you cannot begrudge the visitors their lead. They have worked tirelessly and have looked by far the more clinical of the two teams. After a shaky start the game soon sprung into life as Loic Remy did well to set up the easiest of tap-ins for Hatem Ben Arfa to give the Magpies the lead, which in turn forced Villa into committing more men forward. That they did, but opportunities have been few and far between for the home side, and they still look vulnerable to the counter-attack. It looks set to be an intriguing second half as Villa hope to make their possession count, while Newcastle have aspirations of hanging on for a morale-bossting win and third consecutive clean sheet - join us back here in a couple of minutes to see how all the drama unfolds.
That's it as far as the first 45 minutes is concerned - Newcastle take a one-goal lead into the half time break at Villa Park.
Moussa Sissoko floats a gorgeous pass in behind Antonio Luna for Yohan Cabaye, who whacks his volley just past the far post. Despite all the home pressure, it was the Magpies who had the last chance of the half.
Due to that injury to Okore earlier we will have three minutes added on at the end of this half - Villa are still pushing hard for an equaliser.
As this first half ticks down to a close, Villa continue to mount some pressure on the Newcastle goal. From Benteke's flick, Lowton threads a lovely through ball down the middle for Weimann to run onto. Unfortunately for the home fans, the striker doesn't really have the pace to beat Yanga-Mbiwa, and he takes a pop from the edge of the box that drags harmlessly wide.
We nearly get a goal as well! Matthew Lowton whips in a dangerous looking cross from the right, and Tim Krul completely misjudges it, leaving the ball to fall on a plate for Ciaran Clark. The defender doesn't do a good job of keeping his composure, however, and mishits his shot into the side netting. That was a big chance.
Once more the visitors break forward with Loic Remy and Papiss Cisse - the former cuts inside on the edge of the area, but instead of looking for his teammate, the Frenchman has a dig that never looked like threatening the goal. Any goal in the last few minutes of this half will be absolutely huge.
Newcastle's work rate at both ends of the pitch has been brilliant thus far as they seem to have men everywhere. They are defending diligently when Villa have the ball, but when they retrieve possession they are breaking forward with pace and numbers - very impressive stuff, but how long can they keep it up?
The fans are beginning to get a little bit tetchy at Villa Park as their side continue to waste promising positions. Benteke, Weimann and Agbonlahor are not having their finest games thus far, and the Magpies are dealing with everything being thrown at them admirably.
We aren't even half an hour in and the home outfit are already forced into making a change as Jores Okore fell awkwardly after a challenge with Loic Remy. The defender will be replaced by Ciaran Clark. It hasn't been an ideal start for Villa has it?
Paul Lambert's men have responded well to going a goal down, with most of the game being played in and around Newcastle's 18-yard box. Andreas Weimann forces a decent save out of Tim Krul, but the home fans haven't seen their side force a real chance of note yet.
Agbonlahor pirouettes in the middle of the field before feeding Benteke, who is fortunate to get away from Coloccini. The big Belgian should shoot when he has the chance, but he instead tries to take on Yanga-Mbiwa - the French defender is having none of it. however, and slides in to clear. You'd expect better from Benteke there.
This is a huge goal for Alan Pardew's men you sense, as they continue to quieten any doubters. New signing Loic Remy skins Lowton and El Ahmadi down the left-hand side before sending in a low cross. Papiss Cisse flicks it on, and Ben Arfa is there to tap the ball home from close range.
Hatem Ben Arfa gives Newcastle the lead at Villa Park!
If Gabriel Agbonlahor wouldn't have made it as a footballer, he could easily have made a successful living running the 100 metres - he is absolutely rapid. The Englishman beats Coloccini to the ball, despite being well behind the Argentine when the ball was played, but the Newcastle captain is nothing if not savvy, and he wins a free-kick and relieves any danger.
The hosts haven't really got going yet, and the visiting fans are responding in kind, cheering every time they make a mistake. First it is Andreas Weimann who poorly misplaces a pass out of play, before Matthew Lowton takes a throw-in that harmlessly goes behind for a goal kick. Alan Pardew will be pleased with the way this one is going so far.
Lightning quick passes between Ben Arfa, Cabaye and Cisse release the latter, and just for a moment it looks as though the Senegal forward is through on goal. He just strayed offside, however, and Aston Villa fans can breathe a sigh of relief.
Loic Remy makes use of an advantage decision from the referee and falls over inside of the area. Replays show he just lost his balance, though, and that was a spot on decision by Mike Dean.
As we all know Aston Villa are sharp out of the blocks when they launch a counter-attack, which they do here to great effect. Christian Benteke plays an intelligent ball down the inside left for Gabriel Agbonlahor, but his cross is blocked behind by Mathieu Debuchy. Benteke can't climb high enough from the corner though.
Both sides are struggling to keep the ball for any sustained period of time in the opening minutes, with the midfielders pressing high up the pitch trying to stop the supply lines to the strikers. With the likes of Benteke and Agbonlahor for Villa and Cisse and Remy for Newcastle lurking, you can easily understand why.
Here we go - the visitors get us under way at Villa Park.
Aston Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Okore, Lunar, El Ahmadi, Westwood, Agbonlahor, Delph, Benteke, Weimann. Subs: Steer, Clark, Bacuna, Helenius, Sylla, Tonev, Kozak. Newcastle: Krul, Debuchy, Coloccini, Yanga-Mbiwa, Santon, Anita, Sissoko, Cabaye, Remy, Cisse, Ben Arfa. Subs: Elliot, Dummett, Steven Taylor, Tiote, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Gouffran.
New signing Libor Kozak could make his debut for the hosts, while the defensive duo of Nathan Baker and Antonio Luna are also hopeful of returning from injury to start the game. Charles N'Zogbia is a definite absentee for Villa, though, as he continues to nurse an Achilles problem. Alan Pardew will have Yohan Cabaye at his disposal after the Frenchman ended weeks of speculation by remaining at the club, while Loic Remy could make his debut for the Magpies. Steven Taylor has served his three-match ban and could be back, and Cheick Tiote has recovered from a groin injury. However, Jonas Gutierrez and Gabriel Obertan will miss this afternoon's clash with knee and hamstring complaints respectively.
Today's referee will be Mike Dean, who will be taking charge of his second Premier League match this campaign. The 45-year-old from the Wirral, who has previously been criticised by Sir Alex Ferguson, didn't get off to a gentle start as he brandished seven yellow cards in his first match, so on the off chance that the Villa and Newcastle players are reading this, consider that a warning. However, Dean's card record last season was far more lenient, as he gave out an average of 3.58 bookings a game, so hopefully we don't witness too much controversy today.
Before this season had even begun you sensed that Newcastle fans weren't in the most buoyant of moods, and a 4-0 hammering at the Etihad Stadium on the first day of the season will have done nothing to help matters. However, Alan Pardew has responded to the pressure well, keeping two clean sheets in two games, and picking up four points for good measure. This afternoon they will be attempting to do something they only achieved once last season – win back-to-back Premier League matches. Another reason to be positive comes via the fact that they have already kept two clean sheets this campaign, when they only managed five in the entirety of last season. So it's not all doom and gloom in the North East is it?
Whoever you are, whichever team you support, you simply have to take your hat off to Paul Lambert. Last Christmas it looked like he was a man just waiting to be sacked, but he stuck by his guns and it looks like it may just pay off this campaign. A brilliant opening day victory at the Emirates was followed by unfortunate defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea, but it is the style of play that his side adopted that has caught the eye of many neutrals. Positivity seems to be the order of the day at Villa Park at the moment, but fans should be wary as their team's recent home record is not something to write home about. The Villains have won just one of their last five matches at Villa Park, and have conceded at least one goal in each of their last 12 games on their home turf. Additionally, they have let in a goal in their last 25 league fixtures – a club record. Doctors orders? A clean sheet would be handy I reckon.
A fortnight is an awfully long time in football – it has been two weeks since we last witnessed some competitive action in the Premier League, but worry not as the best division in the world is back for our viewing pleasure this weekend. Hodgson's boys didn't do much to get the juices flowing in Ukraine, but today's affair at Villa Park could turn out to be a cracker. Both sides will be in relatively confident mood as the hosts have performed excellently against two of the league's high-fliers in Liverpool and Chelsea, despite not obtaining any points, while the visitors have remained unbeaten since their opening day thrashing to Manchester City, conceding no goals in the process.
