Manchester City vs. Hull City Tigers
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 2 HULL 0
A goal midway through the second half from substitute Alvaro Negredo and a late second from Yaya Toure spare City's blushes as the 2011-12 Premier League champions claim victory over newly-promoted Hull. Spaniard Negredo stole in on 65 minutes to meet Pablo Zabaleta's excellent cross from the right to head home from close range. Toure added the second in the final minute with a trademark curling free-kick. For long periods, City were off colour and still suffering the mental scars from that damaging defeat at Cardiff last weekend. Manuel Pellegrini's men were short of confidence and could easily have gone behind in the early going. Sone Aluko shot wastefully wide with only the goalkeeper to beat and Danny Graham had the ball in the net only to have his effort rightly ruled out for offside. City huffed and puffed but should have taken the lead moments after the restart when Negredo headed wide with the goal gaping. The £20 million man made no mistake when a similar chance came his way later. The result was more than a little harsh on the visitors, who dominated for the first half-hour and showed enough heart, organisation and determination to suggest they could escape the drop this season.
90' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 HULL 0
Toure curls the free-kick into the top corner. That was a wonderful strike from the Ivory Coast midfielder.
89' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
Nasri is felled by Chester on the edge of the area. That looked like a bit of a dive from the Frenchman.
87' HEADER FROM GRAHAM
Graham meets a cross from the right with a downward header, but the pitch takes all the venom out of the effort and it loops up for Hart to gather gratefully.
86' GREAT TACKLE FROM KOLAROV
Hull have not given up here and only a last-ditch tackle from Kolarov prevents Boyd getting a shot in.
82' FANS WANT A PENALTY
Hull's supporters want a penalty after Quinn's flick appears to hit Zabaleta on the arm, but looking at the slow-motion replay the contact was actually on the side of the right-back's head.
80' PLENTY TO BE PROUD OF
Hull have won just once in their last 34 Premier League away games and since a 1-0 success at Fulham they've drawn seven and lost 17 away contests in the top flight. It's looking like no wins in 25, but they can take heart from today's display.
77' CITY SUBSTITUTION
City's final switch sees James Milner come on for Sergio Aguero. That's quite a defensive move from Pellegrini.
75' HULL SUBSTITUTION
Nastasic meets a free-kick from the right with a looping header that is easily grasped by McGregor. Hull make a change, with Boyd taking the place of Koren.
73' HULL BOOKING
Zabaleta clatters Huddlestone in an aerial challenge and can count himself extremely lucky not to collect a yellow card. Mr Dowd has bottled that decision in my opinion, the ball had long gone. At the other end, Davies is then booked for a foul on Nasri and again, the referee has got that wrong.
70' HULL SUBSTITUTION
Aluko limps off and it appears he has a hamstring problem. Hull are forced into a change as Stephen Quinn comes on.
68' CITY SUBSTITUTION
City make a second change, with Nasri coming on to replace Silva.
67' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a classic striker's goal. City constructed a great first-time move down the right and Zabaleta's instant cross was right on the head of the Spaniard, who nodded downwards past McGregor from close range.
65' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 HULL 0
Alvaro Negredo gives City the lead.
63' HULL BOOKING
Koren's high challenge on Kolarov earns the Hull midfielder a yellow card.
62' IMPORTANT BLOCK
City break after a Hull shot is charged down, but Huddlestone, who had the original effort, gets back to make an important block.
61' MAN CITY BOOKING
Nastasic pulls back Kone near the touchline and is the latest player to have his name taken by Mr Dowd. Graham almost gets in from the resulting free-kick.
58' IMPRESSING IN DEFENCE
James Chester and Curtis Davies have impressed at the heart of the Hull defence today. The 24-year-old Chester is a former Manchester United trainee, so he'll be keen to do well today.
55' WIDE FROM NAVAS
Silva finds some space down the right and pulls the ball back for Navas, whose acrobatic volley goes well wide of the target.
53' GRAHAM SHOOTS OVER
A poor header from Zabaleta falls at the feet of Graham. The former Swansea man swivels and shoots from the edge of the area, but the effort was always rising and clears the crossbar.
51' CHEEKY FROM HART
Joe Hart obviously likes living life on the edge. Danny Graham closes the City stopper down quickly so he gets out of trouble with a cheeky stepover. That takes some guts with your first-team place under threat.
49' BAD MISS BY NEGREDO
City should be in front. Silva lofts a wonderful ball into the box and the unmarked Negredo heads wide from eight yards. Where's Edin Dzeko when you need him?
47' McGREGOR STILL IN GOAL
The good news for Hull is that goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who had been struggling with injury, has emerged for the second half.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
City kick off the second half. Negredo has replaced Dzeko for the home side.
45' HT: MAN CITY 0 HULL 0
It's goalless at the break and if you imagine that Hull have been hanging on here, think again. The Tigers have been in control for most of the first period and with some steadier finishing could easily be in front. The best chance came very early on. A loose ball ricocheted into the path of Sone Aluko, who ran on but dragged a pitiful shot wide of goal with only Joe Hart to beat. Danny Graham had the ball in the net but his effort was ruled out for offside and Robert Koren flashed a first-time shot inches wide of goal. City have been limited to two headed chances, Allan McGregor saving from Aleksander Kolarov and Joleon Lescott.
44' McGREGOR CARRYING A KNOCK
Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor looks to have picked up an injury and his deputy Steve Harper is warming up on the sidelines.
43' TOURE HEADS OVER
Navas floats a right-wing corner on to the head of Toure, but he gets under the ball and heads well over the bar.
41' DEFENDING CONFIDENTLY
City win a free-kick on the right side of the area. Silva delivers, but Hull head clear confidently, something City failed to do at Cardiff last weekend.
38' NOT SHORT OF GOALS
Coming into this match, City had scored in 51 straight home games, the longest active streak in the Premier League and 12 short of Manchester United's all-time record.
36' DOWD IN LENIENT MOOD
Davies is a little lucky to escape a yellow card for a cynical foul on Silva. Hull continue to impress here.
34' BRUCE TOLD TO CALM DOWN
Referee Phil Dowd has come over to the touchline to have a word with Hull boss Steve Bruce, who was frustrated at the award of a free-kick to City.
33' A TALL ORDER
How tough is Hull's task today? City have kept eight clean sheets in their last 11 home games in the Premier League and allowed the fewest goals at home in each of the last three seasons.
31' WORDS OF WISDOM
The way things are going, it will be Manuel Pellegrini who will be keeping his players on the pitch to deliver his half-time team-talk. It's hard to believe City are so off the pace here.
29' LIVING ON SCRAPS
Aguero weaves his way past three Hull tackles but can only chip the ball into the hands of McGregor. City's front two have barely had a kick in the first half hour.
26' PHYSIO ON FOR GRAHAM
McGregor almost collides with his own defender coming to punch clear a cross by Zabaleta from the right, but Hull survive. Graham needs treatment after a collision.
24' MAN CITY BOOKING
The first caution is quickly followed by the second, as Fernandinho fells Aluko near the halfway line.
23' HULL BOOKING
Navas screams in pain after being caught by a clumsy tackle from Figueroa which results in our first yellow card of the afternoon.
20' BACK TO BASICS
Going back to that Graham disallowed goal, it's incredible to me how a Premier League footballer can't look across the line before the decisive pass is delivered to make sure he is onside. It's just basic common sense.
18' TIGERS WELL ON TOP
Hull have been the better side by some distance in the first 15 minutes. They could quite easily be a couple of goals to the good already.
16' KOREN INCHES AWAY
This boy Robert Brady looks a right menace down the left for Hull. Zabaleta hacks him down and when the free-kick is only half cleared, Koren volleys just wide from outside the box.
14' AGUERO GETS TREATMENT
Aguero has popped off the field to get some treatment for a hand injury, but he will be fine to continue.
13' McGREGOR A BUSY MAN
Chester fells Aguero inches outside the penalty area. That was close to being a penalty, which would have been extremely harsh as it appeared the Hull man got some of the ball. Lescott then sees a header tipped over by McGregor.
11' GOAL DISALLOWED
Graham volleys in an excellent Brady cross from the left, but the flag is rightly up for offside.
10' KOLAROV HEADER SAVED
Navas wins City their first corner of the game. Kolarov meets a near-post corner with a firm header that McGregor claws away.
9' TERRIBLE MISS BY ALUKO
Some hesitant City defending sees a ricochet leave Aluko with a clear run in on goal. With only Hart to beat, he screws his shot wide. What a miss!
6' CITY FULL OF NERVES
City survive an early scare as Graham is just unable to collect a long ball forward from Davies. Lescott looked very nervy there.
4' ALL QUIET AT THE ETIHAD
It's eerily quiet inside the Etihad at present. There are quite a few empty seats, but that's more down to the early kick-off, I don't think the City fans have lost the faith just yet.
2' SPARE ANY CHANGE, PLEASE?
Interesting that referee Phil Dowd forgot to pick up his coin after the toss-up for choice of ends. Yaya Toure, fortunately, was more alert and handed back the offending ten pence piece before someone tripped over it.
1' HERE WE GO
Hull kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' TEAM NEWS

0' PREVIEW
New Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini found out last weekend just what the Premier League is all about. No one gives you an easy game, no one respects your reputation and everyone, no matter how lowly, will punish you if your players do not do the basics right. Such as defending set-pieces. City came a cropper at Cardiff City on Sunday in one of the games that come next May will still be talked as one of the Premier League matches of the 2013-14 season. Next up is the visit of another newly-promoted team, Hull City, and anything other than a convincing victory for the home side will be deemed unacceptable. There are two distractions on the near-horizon - the start of the Champions League campaign and the small matter of a home Manchester derby with United in three weeks' time - and there can be no further slip-ups before then. Hull come here with nothing to lose, but they must be fearful of a backlash. And their fans will remember the Tigers have suffered humiliation on this ground before - an inept first-half display that saw them concede four goals without reply famously leading to then manager Phil Brown treating his players like naughty schoolboys and conducting his half-time team-talk on the pitch. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
At one point it looked as though Edin Dezko was a mis-fit at Eastlands who would be moved on to another club. But the former Wolfsburg frontman has found favour with new manager Manuel Pellegrini and has repaid the Chilean's faith with impressive displays in City's opening two games, claiming an assist against Newcastle and a stunning opener at Cardiff last weekend. Impressive is not a word that could be used to describe Joe Hart's start to the season. The England goalkeeper has been out of sorts and although the two goals conceded to Cardiff from corners were attributable to poor defensive marking, Hart's reluctance to dominate his six-yard box and take command of the situation was a contributory factor. Hart's opposite number Allan McGregor has a chance today to keep back-to-back clean sheets in the Premier League, something no Tigers stopper has managed since Boaz Myhill back in October 2008. The former Rangers goalkeeper is likely going to have to produce one of the performances of his career to achieve that milestone, however. City will be out for blood today.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Manchester City have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with six wins to four by Hull and six games being drawn. The Tigers have yet to win against City away from home, drawing three times and losing the other five. The last match between the sides on this ground on Nov. 11 2009 finished in a 1-1 draw, Shaun Wright-Phillips giving the home side the lead on the stroke of half-time, but Jimmy Bullard salvaging a point with a penalty eight minutes from time. Hull won the return 2-1 with goals from Jozy Altidore (31 mins) and George Boateng (54), one of just six victories they managed that season as they were relegated along with Portsmouth and Burnley.
0' FORM GUIDE
City and Hull are separated by six places, but only on goal difference, both sides having won one and lost one of their opening two encounters. City hammered Newcastle 4-0 in their opening match, before losing 3-2 at Cardiff last Sunday. Hull were beaten 2-0 at Chelsea in their first game, but scored a morale-boosting 1-0 home win over Norwich last Sunday, despite having to play 76 minutes with ten men following the dismissal of Yannick Sagbo.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Matija Nastasic has recovered from an ankle injury and is likely to return at the heart of the City defence following that horror show in South Wales last weekend. Javi Garcia, who filled in because of injuries last week, is the man most likely to make way. Vincent Kompany (groin) and Micah Richards (hamstring) are still out. Yannick Sagbo serves the second of his three-game ban following his dismissal against Norwich last weekend. Stephen Quinn (hamstring) is fit again, but may have to settle for a place on the bench.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Phil Dowd, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The man from Stoke-on-Trent showed 75 yellow cards in his 25 games this season and sent off four players (three straight reds, the other for two bookable offences). This is Dowd's third appointment of the new season, he officiated Manchester United's opening week win at Swansea and the dismal goalless draw between Newcastle and West Ham last weekend. Dowd's assistants today are Darren Cann and Peter Kirkup, while Martin Atkinson is the fourth official.
